Ok, this really grinds my gears - people who:

1.) Post a "tutorial" which consists solely of a link to their blog, or a PDF on their blog, or what have you, OR

2.) Make a posting which is simply a link to their blog ("yeah, I agree, I wrote an article about it here")

Man, if I wanted to read peoples blogs, I'd be reading peoples blogs. I want to read Dakka Dakka. If you want to shill for your blog, then at least repost the entire article\tutorial here, and include a link at the bottom saying I have more stuff like this on my blog - don't send me somewhere else in the hopes it was worth going, and then I can come back here to read the subsequent comments.

This bug anyone else here?

Agreed, many of the blogs may well be of interest but are site blocked for us desk bound monkeys. Why not simply repost it on dakka?

Exactly.

I'm only going to try to access sites I know are work friendly, not some random dodgy blog site.

Nothing against blog sites, but if you're posting on Dakka Dakka then post on Dakka Dakka.

Yes, this is a link to a blog and no it's not my blog.

However, I thought it relevant to the discussion considering the topic - all about virtual "Glass Cabinets" and how quite a lot of them are just veiled attempts to get questions answered and links through to their blogs in an attempt to drive traffic.

I would agree, if you are going to post something to Dakka, post it to Dakka, not just a link to your site.

If your post is interesting, I will take a look at your site if you link to it at the end. Most posts which are just a "Hey guys, I did some XYZ and here is a link to my blog!" I don't bother checking out.

Battle Reports are about the only thing I think this is ok for. That's because of the work for the uploading of the pictures and such. P&M is different since you want it to be ongoing it's actually better to post on here. However on any other subject I'd say blog links aren't appropriate.

It was worse a couple months ago. I really didn't like how many threads were just a link to a guy's blog with no other content. Not everyone needs a blog, regardless of the unique snowflake you may be.

I actually don't have a problem with this. I completely get why people do but as long as the blog linked to actually contains the content that was described in the post in the forums, I'm ok with it. If the description on dakka isn't interesting, chances are I won't be visiting the blog anyway, so I won't be disappointed.

I guess I'd rather be directed to the blog, than miss out because someone didn't want to take the time to copy it in to dakka. It's a bit lazy if it could be easily copied and pasted, but formatting and image links might survive better on a personal blog than on a forum.

It also means I get to find out about new blogs - I'm not very knowledgable when it comes to knowing where to look for 40k stuff online, so if these blogs weren't posted, 99% of the time I wouldn't stumble across it.

Wow, that makes me so angry. Like, unbelievably angry.

They just want people to look at the hard work they've done somewhere else. It's probably not worth the effort to copy and paste their entire tutorial.... Just cut them some slack.

Yes, it's very annoying.

I think there's a distinct difference between a forum and a blog, and it's essentially the difference between a bar and pulpit.

The blogger is all about himself (or herself). It's "this is what I believe" and I shall preach to my followers (actual term). Any responses or rebuttals are at the whim of the blogger, and only the blogger is able to decide what the sermon shall be about. Some take email requests, but many do not.

The forum is like the local bar. The bartender (owner/moderator) can set rules and kick out the unruly, but other than that, we're all equals and we're conversing among ourselves. Topics can take detours as conversations are wont to do, and you're more likely to actually make a friend than you are at church.

Going into a bar to announce your latest sermon is rarely welcome. To paraphrase what others have said, if I wanted to hear a sermon, I'd go to church. I came to a bar because I value discussion on equal footing.

The thing I hate more than the blog links is people who put their pictures in spoiler tags, or people who take youtube videos of their models instead of pics.

All 3 of these this will make me back out of a thread.

The first post on my main PLog has older pictures in spoiler tags, and my planned new P&M project will have the pictures in spoiler tags (because it will contain nudity - not of me, don't worry ). Other than that I can't really think of a reason for putting pictures in spoiler tags - the page still takes the same time to load, and images in spoiler tags are missed sometimes as you don't see the spoiler.

As for videos - yeah, that is annoying as I do a lot of browsing at work and can't see youtube videos, or many pictures not hosted directly on Dakka. I don't mind them posting a video in addition to pictures though.

I'd also say it's a little different for battle reports because you probably want better control over the layout.

See, something positive came of this after all!

Also, I kinda hope the people who do this maybe see the percentage of people who dislike this and possible add more content to their posts.

posting some content and appending a link = OK
posting a link without any content at all = bad
