Interesting discussion.
I've recently started posting my articles on Hulksmash's blog. When I write a battle report there, I create a thread here, much like I always have, but instead of the batrep, there's a bit of detail about the event, links to each of the other batreps from the event, and then instead of the actual battle report, there's a link to the battle report on the blog.
I would prefer not to do it that way. I would prefer my content to be here on Dakka. It's not even my blog. I presume that posting on a blog results in less readership, less views, and less comments. Historical data supports that idea. The major difference is that I have control over my content now. I post the same things I always have, but when someone responds with, "You're a cheater, you always have been, and you should die in a fire" I can delete the post. On dakka I can't do that. Reporting it via the "mod alert" button doesn't mean it gets deleted either.
Ever suspension I've picked up from Dakka has been the result of getting tangled up with a troll. Now, while people are still free to disagree with me, or critique me - if they decide to make it a personal attack or particularly inflammatory, I can delete it. No need to respond and defend myself, just deleting offensive content.
My own reason for blogging is the moderation here on Dakka. Other people do it to have control over their content. There are pros and cons. If clicking a link to access content is too much effort, or an unattractive option after having clicked a link to already access the content, that's a personal preference. I suspect that bloggers understand that they get fewer views, fewer comments, and less attention, but for some/many/most/other, its an acceptable sacrifice in exchange for the benefits.

I might have posted before concerning people who has a reputation, generally the bad aspect. Once labeled it is difficult to hard to remove. Only be showing actions to the contrary will you be looked upon by the masses to the contrary. And that is all you have to worry about.
But that is not what this thread is about. It is about people who are using this site (or any site that people and the community who have put time and effort in creating content for that site) for their gain in viewership to their own site by just throwing up a Url to that site.
I think it is wrong to do so. I believe that if people are going to continue to do this they should have the common decency to give a summary of what this link is about.

"We are the Ultramodrines, And We Shall Fear No Trolls. bear this USR with pride".
Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?
You must recite every rule of Dakka Dakka. BACKWARDS.

I've seen people who have quality blogs and add meaningful messages here on the forum get offended but they're not the target of this thread. The problem I have with some bloggers is that they post *JUST* a link to their blog with a few words. That to me is effectively a spam post. I don't have a problem with people that post a few pics of their finished work along with a paragraph or two and THEN tell you to go to their blog for the full 3 page spread and gallery.
Some examples from the battle reports subforum.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/377442.page
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/375734.page
My post here has provided more direct content on dakka than these two battlereports combined. They're no better than a bookmark in a browser. Would it have killed the OP's to post a two or three paragraph synopsis of the report with a pic or two and then post the links? The stupid thing is that the reports that they link to are actually quality works with in focus pictures and decent presentation.

Quoted for truth.
Though I'm afraid that appealing to common decency on the internet is an exercise in extreme optimism.

My only problem is when people post something on a forum but then say they won't respond to any messages posted there, instead they will only reply to people on their blog.
My instant gut reaction is "Gee sorry this forum isn't good enough for you to lower yourself to our level, jerk."
It certainly creates a negative feeling to whatever was posted.

They just want people to look at the hard work they've done somewhere else. It's probably not worth the effort to copy and paste their entire tutorial.... Just cut them some slack.
Yeah because after all that hard work, spending 30 seconds on cut and pasting to Dakkadakka is just too much. If you can't be bothered doing something as simple as that, chances are that your work is not worth looking at.

I agree obviously.
What I find most annoying however is when these links later become broken.
Often happens when I brows older posts for answers. I find someone has asked the same question I want answering, but instead of answering it someone else has just arrogantly linked their blog. The OP responds thanking them for answering the question. I click the link and get a 404.
Yeah that really pisses me off.

The reason I come to forums is because you get a concord of voices in a concentrated place. Posting to a blog is deliberately alienating yourself when you could have a built in audience right here on the forum. That's why I don't have a 40k blog (also because I have an erotica blog that takes up more time)
One could spend their time scouring blogs, building up followers, and joining the blogging community etc, which is similar to a forum environment because of the connections being made, but honestly, posting to a blog and then linking to that blog in a forum post is counter-intuitive because you have potentially thousands of views on a forum post and maybe a few dozen on a blog.
To the point, though, I agree with the OP. Copy and paste your bat-rep. It takes like, four keystrokes. If someone is trolling you, there's this handy IGNORE button in the bottom right corner. If they are interested in reading your blog, they'll probably click the link at the bottom anyway.
Flog your blog at the end of your post or in your sigline.
