Hi again, Dakka.

I'm looking for ways to improve my painting, and would love to hear what you think.
Please tell me where I should focus, and what I should think of next.

And yes, I'm absolutely no master painter yet, so you don't have to tell me that I suck and that these are not as good as what you can do blindfolded and so on.

I really like the skin on the tankbustas and storm boys some of the cloth and metal areas look a little flat but I'd say these are looking really sweet!

I would love to see some weathering on these guys... especially on the trukk in your gallery. Rust, mud, dirt...

They look very crisp and clean... That's perfect, but not really orky. ^^

So, overall, these look great.

The one thing that jumps out at me that you could improve is the checked pattern on the stormboy's choppa. I know it's hard to paint perfect square shapes at this scale, so what I normally do is to paint very thin brown lines between the black and white squares. Something like calth brown should work well. Looks neat and tidy without being too conspicuous.

Pretty sure those are Kommandos, not Tankbustas The Stormboy looks pretty good actually - could just use the checks on his chainsword neatened up.

Brilliant, I don't know what you are beating yourself up about. I love the pink bits on the mouth of the stormboy.

Personally I like the choppa checks. It looks crude in an orky way. Like some mek came with a large brush and painted some splodges on it.

Although I did see that the choppa on the right of the picture of the stormboyz has some pretty bad mould lines.

The odd bits are a little flat. Baddrukk's ogryn rippa gun for a start.

You paint better than I do anyway. But that is mostly to bone idleness on my part. And the fact I run a tide list.

They look great!

I have a suggestion for cleaning up the checker-pattern on the stormboy's choppa:

Start by painting the whole thing white (use a light gray as a base then do a couple thinned coats of white), mark off a grid with a pencil and fill in every other square with black. It's much easier to paint black fine black lines over white than the other way around.

Thanks a lot for the feedback.
And yes, they are ofcourse Kommandos... Don't know what I was thinking about here.

Lots of good advice here, checkerboarding is something I can improve a lot on, going to try out the different things you say here.

The stormboys are high standard paint jobs- but the Baddrukk.. It just seems too flat. Not a fan of him, try dirtying him up a bit, but you are a very good painter- just look at the skin on the stormboyz...

Yes, how did you get that paint job? That is if you are interested in sharing it.

The gold on the kaptin looks a little flat...it could use a wash and a highlight or something for more depth.

Dark base skin tone, drybrushed with a light green (scorpion green, I think), washed the skin in thraka green, and then a liberal wash with gryphonne sepia all over the models. Then highlighting if needed.

Really nice. The only thing I would change is to "whiten" their teeth a bit. Not so much it looks like they brush or anything, but more to give a little contrast and 'pop' to the face of the models. Very nice Orks, dude.
