So when we all decided to sell our souls to GW for little plastic soldiers, which army did you pick at first and what about them appealed to you?

Mine was Black Templars. Marines but not, and with the crusading knight theme that i absolutely loved.

My first army was IG. I mainly liked the tanks, but I also liked that it was the closest to a real army and that it has a flexible codex.

Like most people, I went with SPESS MAHREENS. I still like the Vanilla Marines, but Tau took over as my favorite

I started around 1991 or so, and I played Tyranids. I started playing Nids because my two buddies who got me into the game were both already playing marines, and I didn't want to play the same army as them. After many whoopings I shelved the Nids and built both a Space Wolf and a Eldar Army, but once my 2nd Edition Nid Codex came out I revamped the Nids. Now all these years later my nid army is completely invalid and missing a ton of the new units.

I will never ever forget the main reason why I LOATHE the Ultra Marines. It is all because of Marneus Calgar. Back when I was playing 2nd edition, my Nid army actually did quite well if I managed to get close enough, in fact, it was game over once I got into close combat. Especially with 2nd edition CC rules, my opponents never got to hit back. then the Ultra Marine codex comes out, and my buddy says lets play a game this weekend I got my new book. I at the time, only had a bestiary for my Nids - no Codex. So I show up at the gaming store with my army, he and his other buddy are laughing and he tells me he has a way of beating me in CC, and I laugh and am like, yeah whatever dude. He then places this little dude with two power fists on the field and I am like, who is that dude? He is like oh wait and see. Can I see your book I asked, and he said nope.

So, Calgar had like all these CC abilities, like parry and dual power fists and never lost, and basically destroyed like 4 units of gene stealers and a freaking carnifex all by himself. At that very moment I vowed to NEVER play ultra marines and to always hate them, and I think I was about 12 years old at the time. Still hate them to this day. Calgar was extremely broken in 2nd Ed. In fact I am almost certain GW made assassins even more broken to fix their broken special characters. It basically took an assassin to kill all the cheesy named characters in 2nd edition. Assassins with vortex grenades!!!!! Back then you could add any war gear you wanted to any character.

The guy that runs the hobby store finds it hilarious I hate them still to this day because of a child hood memory of them.

okay, that was one of the few legitimate reasons that i have heard about why people hate the ultras. I have calgar, but dont ever use him(dont like that many pts in one special character, also, 5th edition is assaulthammer 40k not herohammer 40k, so i guess hes not as good as he used to be).

also, that was fairly crappy of your friend to not let you see the rulebook, whenever my friend says i cant see his rulebook when he pulls some crazy chaos rule out of his butt i threaten to leave

Oh he let me see it once we got into hand to hand, but he didn't want me to prepare for it. Of course you only get to pull that trick off once, so it wasn't a huge deal. In 2nd Ed there was no roll to hit, you rolled your attacks and added your WS, and the opponent did the same. You compared scores and the difference was how much the loser lost by. So, in many cases you got zero attacks back.

Then again back then I played Space Wolves, which wasn't really a contender army compared to the Angels or the Ultra Marines, but now they are in 5th ed. I basically took a 15 year break from war gaming and just got back into the hobby. So my only two valid 5th edition armies are my Eldar, Space Wolves, and Orks. My Nids, and IG need a lot of revamping. Back in 2nd edition my IG army was all leman Russ tanks and artillery lol.

A custom Space Marine chapter called the War Dogs (chapter colors were pretty much just Second Edition Dark Angels), built from the Tactical Squads in the Second Edition 40k boxed set, two metal Dreads, five metal Terminators and a couple of Warzone models for characters.

My first army was tau, and I painted them so bad. Also I didn't buy very much and nothing useful, so I never played with them at all. After a while I sold them. My first actual army was Eldar, and those I still play.

3rd. Edition CSM. Those models got me hooked on miniature gaming. I can still remember going into our Hobby Town (its been gone for years) and just staring at those models. They were pricey and I didn't get any until I had enough saved up from my paper route.

When I started playing it was still the Rogue trader days so I actually started on the Fantasy side with Undead and Chaos armies, untill the 40k Compendium came out containing the Genestealer Chaos Cult army and I never looked back. From there I expanded into a full Chaos marine army of followers of khorne. Finally sold off the components of my genestealer cult a couple of years ago. It was tough to do, but they never saw the table top anymore and were just taking up space. Flank attack with a 20 strong unit of genestealers usually meant the game was done. In Rogue Trader days a bloodthirster cost around 1200 points and was worth every point...

From those humble beginnings I have had:
Khorne, Nurgle, Slaanesh and Tzeentch Chaos Marines (Nurgle and Slaanesh armies were built 2 different times!)
Ork Kult of Speed
Tyranids
Necrons
Eldar
Dark Eldar (never really a full sized army for me at the time)
Daemonhunters/Grey Knights
Witchhunters/Sisters of Battle
Chaos Daemons
2 different Space Marine incarnations
Imperial Guard

Currently have active: Khorne, Nurgle, Slaanesh Chaos marines and Chaos Daemons.

Currently building: A new tyranids army, a new Dark Eldar army and a Forge world Chaos Renegades army.
Have all the figures necessary for the Chaos renegades army, just a matter of time to put them all together. Have some minis for 'Nids and Dark Eldar, but primarily a battle force each with a box or two of other units only.
Hoping the new Necron codex is more interesting than the existing one and not so uber cheesy that I won't want to play the force.

Sorry way more info than asked for...

Started out with Necrons which got to nearly 4,500pts worth (I love Apocalypse sized battles) then sold most of them, now making a CSM army while I wait for Matt Ward to crank out the next Necron Codex with which I'll probably build a new Necron army.
