hey users,

Today I went to obtain a copy of the more recent white dwarf in my nearby smiths store, but, it wasn't there! the dude said that the owners of the magazine had stopped distributing to unofficial outlets, but "joto" (my local hobby store) claimed they still receive it..... anyone know what the deal is?

also, when the hell are we gonna get some new phoenix lords for the eldar! the current ones are pants!

Maybe they haven't gotten the shipment back. As for the Pheonix Lords, probably when they update the codex.

There was a mention on here a while ago saying WHSmiths weren't getting it anymore, I think it was an attempt to make people go into a GW shop where they could be hassled into buying a Baneblade and the glue and the clippers and you'll need paint!..........lots of paint.....hobby knife...SM Battleforce...bitzpacks etc....

They might just not be shipping them to non-hobby shops. My FLGS is still getting it. As for Phoenix Lords, don't expect anything new anytime soon.

My local newsagent, who always has the issue... said that the distributor for Australia has changed and they dont have it yet with no communication available

Old news.

Smiths wanted to increase the stocking fee or whatever and GW turned around and said, no, any extra money we gouge off our customer base we shall keep'.

Coincidence is that Smiths reported a 4% drop in sales the other day.....

Just stop buying WD, it's little more than a catalogue of current new releases. Oh and Tesco always have it.

And Tesco's put it on the shelves early as well. i.e as soon as they get it, which is before GW stores.

The store I get my lunch from is massive as well so its easy to find a nice quiet corner and take a butchers, so no need to but it either!

White Dwarf has no help for an issue like that...

As a matter of fact, I can't even help you with an issue like that.

As someone who first got into GW many years ago after picking a WD up from a newsagents, this is extremely sad news.

Way to try and make the hobby even more niche..

I used to use Smith all the time. Recently though they're pretty useless. The one near me has halved in size in recent years, they've stopped selling music & DVDs and their book selection is lame. Last time I went in was for the kids Doctor Who Adventures magazine, they didn't even have that.

It's sad for UK business but I fear Smiths is yet another company on it's way to going under.

A newsagent I occaisionally pop into in York do exactly the same thing.

It kinda makes a mockery of GW's 'Top Secret' approach, when you can Just pop into a newsagent & if you wanted to, get WD before GW are supposed to sell it. Even if it was just a day before (thats when I saw it, could have been on sale earlier - and it was the July issue).

This also means a lot of small newsagents won't be able to get it as a lot of them use Smiths for their magazines...

What an amazing way to reduce sales and customer base. Soon the five year plan will be complete, and the only way to purchase GW items will be if you actually break into Kirby's basement, and bypass the timelocked doors to the secret underground bunker...

Sort of off topic. When do each issue come out each month? I'm patiently sitting on my hands for the issue with the sister rules

Yeah, I bought many WD's from Smith's, ever since I was a kid - it was like a ritual almost, I'd rarely buy it anywhere else. Strangly I never buy it from GW and even stranger is the fact that the more independent Newsagent's around my area still stock it, and they'll probably put it out early - because they couldn't care less.

It's sad for UK business but I fear Smiths is yet another company on it's way to going under.

I can see Smith's going under as well, or at least making massive cuts. Sad times...

Further highlighting how much it all is...

Don't give them any more ideas! You forgot to mention the "special secret favours" Kirby will demand if he catches you

Perhaps GW should think about just sucking it up. WHSmiths are a big newsagent supplier, there are a lot of shops as well as their own which won't be carrying GW now, there are towns and villages now in which it won't be possible to find a White Dwarf. It's GW's choice of course, but IMO they could have either put up with it or simply found a way to send it to WHSmiths at a time that would prevent early release, or adjust their own release date accordingly.

I mean if the magazine is printed and ready to be sold you can't reasonably supply it to people and tell them to sit on it. Or is it that GW can send the magazine out to suppliers like WHSmiths but they can't get their own gak together and supply their own stores and independent retailers at the same time which allows WHSmiths to get the jump on them? Space costs money, shops want to clear stock as fast as possible not having it sitting around taking up valuable warehouse space just to pander to GW's need to be all controlling in how things are released to the public. This is the same company that basically scrapped people subscribing to White Dwarf being able to get it on the release day or even a little early which shows that GW place their obsession with control over information beyond all else. Why else prevent White Dwarf subscribers getting their copies on time and removing your magazine from the shelves of the biggest newsagent distributor in the UK? GW again seem to think the world should revolve around them and jump to everything they demand. It will just hurt them in the long term, their niche magazine is now even more niche. WHSmiths are a big company and will do things to suit them, the majority of publishers seem to think they are worth dealing with, there are not many people like GW that think it's preferable to throw their toys out of the pram and remove their magazine from their shelves. Cutting off ones nose to spite your face is the phrase that comes to mind.

In a perfect GW world only they would sell WD, but even they're not stupid enough to do that. So they simply put heaps rules around the selling of their magazine and make everyone follow them. Some people choose not to follow these rules, and now those people don't sell their products.

Pretty simple really (however stupid).

I dunno... I get the feeling from his original comment that it was an albino midget that gave him all the tournament info and who was... fun.

Where can I buy one of these informative little buggers for myself?
