Well gotta ask a few questions before saying much.
1 do you play any fantasy or 40k armies? if so which army or armies.
2 what is your play style or what play style would you like to try?
3 which models do you like better?
4 what fluff do you like.
5 is money enough of an issue to play a roll?
Those questions are sort of important to ask.
Personally I like my chaos angry guys that are better than you in cc yea why not.
Nasty magic trickery also a plus.
Sick models and low model count cheap yet effective.

To tell you this.
WoC have 1 shooty unit that being the hellcannon.
Other than that the only range is magic (which isnt bad).
Dwarfs those guys are slow so you sit back fire your war machines and then kill what survives that.
But you are not very likely to be the one charging the enemy since you well short men short legs means you dont move fast
If you want something shooty and assaulty empire might be more your cup of tea.
Lots of war machines cannons mortars hell blasters.
Magic buff debuff good times.
You have faster moving units, means you can charge the enemy with more ease.

Forge world now do some Chaos Dwarfs, but not quite a full range methinks, not sure of rules, might have to find them yourself. http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer/CHAOS_DWARFS
Personally, I would rather convert my own Chaos Dwarfs, these ones are not my favourite.
Happy Dwarfing!

Thing I like about dwarfs is there are various ways of playing them. You could go with lots of great weapon warriors/hammerers for solid close combat. Gun lines with our many war machine options and core shooting units. And an ambushing army using scouting rangers and miners. I played a game against WOC the other day with an ambushing army, 2 units of rangers with bugman, an anvil and some miners was fun. I loved the look on my opponents face when I just fielded like 2 units for deployment and asked if he was ready for scouting deployment yet.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

I would say go dwarfs, not because i play dwarfs and i love them...but because it will do a better job of doing what you like, but if you really want a half and half army id have to say try empire, they're quicker at getting into combat and have some good units for both shooting and CC. so i think either of those two armys will do you good

This is the general thought of what Dwarfs are. I love your input cowpow but it's not totally accurate here. Dwarfs are great at close combat with 2 handed warriors and hammerers. Just the other week I played my buddies WoC with an ambushing Dwarf list using a combination of rangers and miners supported by an Anvil of Doom, only war machine I brought was an Organ Gun, it was a close game but the Dwarfs actually came out ahead. I loved the look on my buddies face when I put down like 2 units and then asked if he was ready for scout deployment.

Think it was something like this:
Runelord (Anvil of Doom, RoStone, RotFurnace, Shield) - 328
Bugman - 155
Thane (MRoChallenge, RoBrotherhood, GW, MRoGromil) - 139
Dragon Slayer - 50
35 Warriors (Great Weapons, Longbeards, Rangers, FC) - 515
35 Warriors (Great Weapons, Rangers, Full Command) - 410
21 Miners (FC, Steam Drill) - 281
Organ Gun - 120
