Fron the newsletter fresh in my inbox:

This summer, every Warhammer army will engage in an epic campaign of magic and mayhem. With the Winds of Magic causing havoc across the Warhammer world, the Scourge of the Storm global campaign will see which army ends up as the most dominant.

Scourge of the Storm is a global campaign based around the new Warhammer Expansion, Storm of Magic. You will be able to record the results of your Storm of Magic battles on our campaign page, and you'll also be able to see how your chosen faction is progressing, both around the world and in your own country. What's more, Games Workshop Hobby Centres will be conducting hundreds of battles, and any results you enter there will count for more.

So make sure head down to your local store this weekend and beyond to join in the epic conflict!

And here's the link to the campaign page:

http://www.games-workshop.com/stormofmagic?utm_term=other&utm_medium=email&utm_content=text-link-body&utm_source=e5500001-en_AU&utm_campaign=+ScourgeoftheStormNewsletter-en_AU

A few questions:

1. Is this the big mystery for September then?
2. Does this mean we might see something similar for 40K in the future?
3. Will they do a better job than the previous campaigns?
4. How come I'm posting this? I never post anything!

Has the world gone mad?

1. Pretty lame mystery if it has.
2. Given what happened with the previous ones, let's hope not.
3. Is it still Games Workshop running it?
4. Everyone's got to have a thread 'Threads started by...' in their user profile. And it does count as news.

This is Games Workshop. The very concept of a 'preview' causes their skin to melt and their eyes to burn.

Having examined the website, it just looks like an exercise in "let's see which army is best". No campaign map, no objectives, nothing. In fact, not really a campaign at all.

Well, it is absolutely hammering it down with rain, meaning that the summer has officially started, so it makes sense to announce things today

Maybe they did learn from their previous mistakes then.

Yes, never do anything again which is too much hassle and involves too much communication with the fan base

I hope this leads to new campaigns for 40k and Fantasy, and with it new campaign books. Pipe dream, I know, but it's a thought! Even if there's no map or what have you, the idea is at least in someone at GW's head right now, which could lead to something in the future if it doesn't blow up in anyone's face.

So it's a simple 'oh I won, put the info here' campaign. Cost cutting is getting so out of hand they cut imagination.

With new campaign books? Hmm... what was the last campaign book I bought. Ah yes! Codex: Eye of Terror. That book was awesome, and resulted in yet another army that I bought that GW no longer supports.

Wow. In the past, nothing drew in new players (Like me with EoT) like the notion of your battles mattering for the overall scope of the game. Advertising this ahead of time, letting you ready your armies, plan strategies, coordinate other players of your army... (the orks and Scarus, for instance). This gets new players excited, old players talking, end generally moves people into the store.

I mean, kudos for doing it, but why bother if no one knew ahead of time and had time to prepare? +1 for the idea, -2 for execution. Schmucks.

Good news. This is the best time in the hobby. Full of promise. GW lets us down each time and we know it but secretly we're hoping that this is the edition that GW gives us a balanced game that can also be played competitively at tournaments. I'm loving it.

To quote insaniak:

insaniak wrote:Yeah, the 'official' stated reason for the secrecy is that GW believe that we all have the attention span of goldfish, and so if they let us know what they're working on more than a week before release, we'll all have lost interest by the time we're supposed to be mobbing the store to buy it.

That's why we don't know about it in advance.

Which is clearly wrong. We didn't "spontaneously" forget that the Dread Knight looked like ass, or what armies were coming next, or the concerns and excitement about 8th ed fantasy. We havent forgotten about 6th ed, or new rumored releases, nor have we forgotten how often certain designers (not mentioned by name to avoid thread derailment) have burned us with ridiculous rules. Nor have we forgotten lore that was arbitrarily changed by said designer and others of his ilk for no better reason than to change them for masturbatory fluffery.

We don't forget, and by pricing as they do, they won't get any new players who never knew, either.

I like it Cypher
If I could be arsed I would put another win for the Woodies against Vamps
Why let the fact that I have never played such a game get in the way.
It is a fantasy battle after all, so if I fantasize about it then it counts, right?

If this was true I'd be trying to hack the syetem so Fimir had twice as many victories as any of the supported races. Chaos Dwarfs too lol

Then again I am the kinda guy who goes to GW stores and tries to use Imperial Guard Valkyries as ounts as Terradons against Vampire Counts just to irritate the staff

I just don't understand GW. They design a casual game in which the number one rule is to have fun. Then they turn around and make a 'campaign' which is little more than a tally of wins for each army. I do not think that such a campaign would appeal to casual gamers, because they are less interested in who wins and who loses than in narrative and fun mechanics. I suspect that fantasy has little appeal to competitive gamers, because of GWs long history of unbalanced games, poorly worded rules, and untimely FAQs. The average competitive gamer would probably just choose War Machine, because it is more balanced, and has thriving company supported leagues and tournaments.

With genius business decisions like this it is no wonder that GW closed most of its shops in Japan.

I understand that this campaign is a dissapointment for all those gamers who can win 4 games of 3000 points within one hour, but campaigns changing the course of the Warhammer universe are a thing of the past.

This "campaign" has no real story, just a marker to show which side won the day. GW Germany though makes an ineractive event on the last day of the "campaign".

Bha the last viable Campaign for me was 3rd War for Armaggedon and the Eye of Terror.

Those where true campaign, where things could get ugly;i will forever remember the organized assault of a few minors planets from chaos players with a limited task force,so that Imperial players took the bait and did put all there defenses on those, while the true Assault was conduncted else where and that Chaos obliterated a whole planete and captured a sub sector!!

Ah the face of the Imerpials the next morning...priceless!

The Planete was St Joshmann's Hope or something...

And regrettably, therein lies the problem with internet campaigns. It's too easy to cheat. Even if you needed two people to confirm a result, you'd still only need an easily faked second log in ID.

Indeed.

At best, this will let GW see what armies are dominant--once they weed out what they think are repeat or spam 'battles'.

I do hope spam battles are fought after the pork has been removed from the tin.
Like a food fight as much as the next chap, but you could have someone's eye out if you don't get the spam out of the tin.

And then, come the Wood Elf rewrite, they'll look at these results and think "WOW! Wood Elves are far too strong vs Vampire Counts. We should tone them down some." :(

They'll probably just cancel the entire campaign if someone posts mean things about them.. since GW has such a thin skin

Also, its totally unbelievable that the woodelves could beat *anyone* except other wood elves and dogs of war! Should put them down as all "didnt get massacred this time"
