Essentially the argument is that Rotten Tomatoes, which is owned by Warner Brothers, is holding back on posting positive reviews of Captain America (and perhaps other movies) to hurt it's review score to make it look worse for as long as it can, while doing the opposite with WB owned movies. Anyone thoughts? Paranoia or probable?

Probably paranoia but potentially possible. I like alliteration. Considering that games companies have been known to post fake reviews to boost their scores on Metacritic (e.g. Bioware with Dragon Age II), it's not unbelievable that Warner Brothers would do this. However, it does seem like a lot of work to detract other's films.

I'd say paranoia. Mainly because Johnston hasn't done anything good since October Sky (and not much good before hand), so I don't have much of a hope for Cap.
He's just a really bad director.

Maybe Captain America just sucks? It sure looks like it does.

I do have to say:
Since this dispute came out, RT suddenly released a lot of positive reviews.
That kind of makes me think that they really were doing that....
It's kinda like how that story in the news this past week, where the Hydration for Health council who have been suggesting to the EU we all drink two litres of water a day for ages, was found out to be founded by Danone.
They own Evian and Volvic.

It should be illegal. Srsly. =|
On the RT topic - Last I checked, RT had Captain America at 40%.
Today it's 70%. A 30% jump in a day is pretty odd without the claim positive reviews are being held back.

Or that they just released a lot of positive reviews so that they can do damage control.
Even if it's untrue, the mere implication of it is a Big Deal when it comes to consumer loyalty. People would perceive WB as being 'sneaky' or 'underhanded' for doing such, even if it's just vague implications and rumors.
Seemed like a lot of reviews didn't get posted on their respective sites until yesterday PM, though. It's at 71% right now, and at 79% among top critics. Doesn't seem like there's anything to see here.

Why would anyone believe they are unbiased reviewers?
Whether these allegations are true or not, the fact that they're owned by a movie production company should cast doubt on their credibility.
But they're not doing the actual reviews...they just compile reviews from newspapers and sites across the country. And if they "accidentally" left off certain people or monkeyed with their formula in a biased way, it'd be fairly obvious.
I was keeping an eye out for Cap reviews at various papers yesterday, and like I said, many didn't get posted on their home sites until the afternoon. Keep in mind this movie is an actual Friday release instead of a midweek release.
I've never put much stock in what the majority of people on the internet have to say about anything. For example, were I looking for information on GW and happened across Dakka I might end up convinced that the company is run by Hitler, The Blair Witch, and Jack the Ripper.
I also decided that movie critics don't know what they're talking about at a very young age; I read a Rolling Stone review of Starship Troopers and they skewered it. From that day on I knew that it is best to draw my own conclusions.

Movie Critics are like tabloids. Everyone complains but they garner millions of hits/readers so whether a handful of people don't like them, many many people do read them, even if it is to be upset that someone doesn't like what they like.
This isn't really about whether a person likes reviewers; they have an impact regardless if anyone agrees with them or not. The question is whether this is a payola type situation where they are being slightly manipulated to effect opening weekend revenues.

Ah, I did forget to tie it all up at the end. Could it be that Rotten Tomatoes is being manipulated? Possibly. Does it matter?
I don't think so.
Revenge of the Fallen has a 20% on the tomato meter; it made $402 Million at the box office.

Some movies are bullet proof, but many other films it matters quite a bit. This isn't a world domination type conspiracy, so huge impact isn't the point. If by slightly delaying what they would do anyway (post the reviews) WB can shave 2 or 3 million off their competition and add another 1 million to their films for the weekend, doesn't that seem worthwhile? I'm not saying it is done, but it wouldn't surprise me. The movie and music industry has a history of such shenanigans.
20% seems a bit generous for that train wreck as well.

From a purely speculative standpoint, this wouldn't surprise me at all. In my opinion, there is no depth that the industry in question won't sink to.

If people read medical opinions, not just made-up stuff that companies get inserted into the press to shill their products, then it's clear we don't need to drink two litres of water a day. (If we did, there's nothing wrong with tap water.)
Superhero films don't really count in the category of stuff people should know for their basic health, IMO.
I did try drinking two litres of water a day for a while, when I was on a health kick. It doesn't half make you pee a lot.
My view on critics is find a reviewer or reviewing site that you feel shares similar values on quality and use that for advice. Although their doesn't mean their opinions are end-all be-all, don't be afraid at looking at
things with a different/your own perspective. Either way I usually find myself in agreement with a lot of Rotten Tomatoes reviews.

Seems probable. IIRC there were a few reviews that should've counted as "fresh" but ended up being "rotten" and it can take a while to change those ratings. They sort of make the call on whether or not a review is favorable or not at least when it comes to their own rating.
Still I use it to browse how movies are being received and whether or not to invest the time and money into catching the movie at a theater. More often than not they seem spot-on even though they tend to rank guilty pleasures pretty low
