Case in point...
I play in a monthly league where the prize is about $100.00 in store credit.

last month, my final opponent found out he was playing me before hand, knew what army i played (as i played it all month) and tooled his list to beat it. I mean, it was comical how apparent it was.
Needless to say, i was put off a bit.

This month, final game and guess who i see across the table?
Yup... same guy. I knew beforehand that it was gonna suck...

we rolled off for sides, and as i was still unpacking, I asked what the deployment was.
"Dawn of war" he replied.
Ok, i then asked what the objective was, and it was "kill points".
So i said "i will go first".
Well, what do you know.. this "Dawn of war" scenerio had NO NIGHTFIGHT. he gleefully said "i wont try to seize".
Well no duh! You roll on automatically and shoot.
So, My bad for believing this guy, and a lesson learned to know when playing this type of "Player" to think every word out of their mouth is a lie and read the mission myself BEFORE rolling any dice for any reason.
Then it came to shooting, and that is where the magical chimeras that can shoot twice in the same phase crap began.
"That tank already shot!"
"No it didn't!"
So i let it go, but next round, I MARKED on my side of the table which ones shot, etc...
Sure enough, he tried the cheat on me again, and i pointed out where I had "Marked" the vehicles and what shot. I even told him which unit the tank already shot at, and when.
I just got a blank stare... no apology, no remorse, nothing.
I asked him "Do I have to continue to keep track myself, or do you have it from here?"
he told me I had better keep track.

The game got worse... emergency disembarked troops that count as going to ground (3+ cover) that were not pinned or gone to ground, etc... they got the benefit of the "go to ground" without the penalty of not being able to move or shoot next round.
I called a judge over on this one, but was overruled. Good trick to remember, if you emergency disembark, you count as gone to ground for THAT PLAYER TURN ONLY!

Then, the troops that had "gone to ground but didnt" failed a morale check, but he claimed they remained where they were because they could not move, etc...
Yeah, a bunch of BS, but in the end, i beat him and took the month.

the crappy part of all this is that I know i may have to face him next month...
So, you guys ever play a game you knew was going to suck before a dice was even rolled?

Theres always the option to not play with that guy. its a game, how much does the prize really matter to you? from the sound of it your playing a monthly league, try setting up another day for your league buddies to play fun/friendly games.

Another option would be to talk to the guy, rather than complaining on the internet. a direct conversation might settle the issue, but be sure to support your claims and be courteous so you sound concerned rather than like a douche. That doesn't always work though as some people are set in their ways so the first option might be the best one.

EDIT: as for bad games myself, no i've never played a game i would knew would suck. I've hit the point in a game where i'm, "damn i've gotten stomped and didn't have fun" but thats about it. people at my gaming club are really nice people and even when playing competitively they usually keep a fun atmosphere so even when you get smashed, you had fun.

I took a foot necron list on a dare to a 2000 Pt tournament.

100 warriors and one lord.

Battle 1- Khorne Daemons- all assault, all powerweapon eq army. Not a hope

Battle 2 - Same deal, as an all nurgle army with Epedimius- TO rules that every time a necron died it counted for the tally. His army was megatooled up without me actually losing anyone (due to good wbb rolling) before we were halfway through. - Curbstomp #2 (the tally ruling has now been reversed for that tournament, because it was a touch much.. )

Battle 3- Blood Angles mixmaster Dread and Assault loony list with Mephiston- Nuff said.

I know for a fact that my list wasn't uber-competitive (and would thus get beaten) but those three matchups were brutal. It did look awesome to have 100 warriors taking the field though, and they did manage to account for the DP and GD's in the first 2 games, and flash-fry mephiston with 120 gauss beams when he missed charge range by about an inch in front of 3 warrior squads It was fun

The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...

On moon miranda.

Everyone gets these games at some point, whether it's army matchup that just isn't fun or poor opponents or both. Fortunately, they are rare for me, and the primary reason I tend to avoid larger venues these days.

my point is; is it the prize you want or is it that you want to play? tournaments seem to bring out the worse in people (aka people trying to win at all costs) and a competitive atmosphere kinda kills the fun sometimes. I play for fun so if i had to deal with someone like that i would be quite unhappy with it. sure one bad game won't kill the day for me, but it would still suck the fun out of me. Thats just me though, i'm sure other people can handle a more competitive atmosphere and still have fun, but i'm presenting alternative to having to deal with "the game that would suck before it even began".

Assault heavy Blood Angels deep-striking a stormraven loaded up with a death company dreadnought and Mephiston. Fighting two fronts from a jackass opponent.

I'd just take the morale highground, and do nothing. If he come back with an army designed to smash yours, well there's a good chance he wont make it to the end with such a specialized army. And if that army does beat you? So what, don't make a big deal out of it, and if he does take a video of it, and put it on Youtube.

Any game where my oppoenent tries to tell me my army's rules when I clearly have an understanding, or when an oppoenent (spelling might be off) gloats because either

A) His Devastors and Crusader took down a brood of gaunts/mob of guardsmen.

B) His deepstriking melta unit, shockingly, destorys a tank.

This is my Leman Russ. There are many out there like it, but this one is mine. Without it, I am useless. Without me, it is useless.

Is there a reason that a tournament with money on the line had no judges?

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Any time that I find myself playing against a Deep Striking army, it's pretty much assured that I'm not going to have a good time. I've logged more games against Chaos Daemons than any other army in 40k (seriously, about twelve games against Daemons, the next closest opponent would be three games against Dark Eldar ), and my most recent game was fluff Guard versus a Deathwing Assault army with a huge collection of TH/SS Terminators. Bad day for me. My opponent was kind of stand-offish, until he realized that he had the game won by Turn Two.

Yeah. You need an independent party in the store (perhaps the store manager) that you can call over.

If you get enough people complaining about a guy, it's in the store's best interest to take care of it. Just do so in a calm, rational voice.

Best of luck.

My first game with my new Nurgle CSMs against Necrons saw *all* of my Aspiring Champs kill themselves with their Plasma Pistols, my normal marines mirked without gaining a single kill and only the Plague Marines actually reaching an assault (and annihilating a warrior squad) before they were Pie Plate'd by the Monolith. My bikes were just stuck in assault with a Lord and his scarabs for the whole game.

A friend of mine is very...very WAAC to the point where it really isn't enjoyable to play. We took a breather from the game for a few months and got back to it...the only thing worse than diehard WAAC attitudes is a diehard WAAC attitude that isn't backed up by substantial rules knowledge.

No, your Kan doesn't get a cover save because it's in area terrain.

No, you can't shoot what you can't see.

No, all of your s aren't cocked. Neither are my s, let's just play the game.

Your Deff Rolla is either part of the hull or it's pure scenery. None of these "use it for disembarking and tank shocking but not for receiving shots" shenanegans.

Just gets worse and worse...

Pretty much an auto lose when the IG have Master Of The Fleet to screw up your deep strike reserve rolls.

Tyranids versus IG is always hard, though that does increase the joy when you do well and wax their arses.

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Sounds like you have 3 problems here:

1) Army built to hose you and it happens.

2) Not verifying scenario rules for yourself.

3) Player who is cheating and/or ignoring those rules that he doesn't like.

For number 1 there isn't much you can do. You still won, so no worries there.

For number 2, next time just confirm the scenario yourself. You are allowed to do so and looks like you are committed to that.

For number 3 I'd report him to the league judge/admin/controller. If he cheats against you, he is problem cheating against others too. It is irritating that *you* need to keep track of what your opponent does each turn to make sure they don't try to cheat you. Cheating takes away the fun for everyone. Again you did win, but in my book it is the principle of the matter that works the most. If he keeps pulling his crap, keep complaining. If they don't do anything, then find a new place to play or just don't bother to play with that guy anymore. Luckily in my local league there is no real staging for battles and whomever shows up or communicates ahead can play each other, so no brackets mean never having to play the douche who pisses you off.

If he cheats report him. This was some sort of tournament so there should be a judge(you said that you did report him but the guy overruled so you are either in mistake about the rules or the judge needs to learn them). In my country when someone cheats he gets A) Punched B) Kicked C) Shot I would go with the punch in your case. Smash his face and say that you saw a deadly spider on his face and you tried to squish it Be serious about it and make the guy fear you. That's how real men roll

Faced a pretty similar list, except they had 3 psyriflemen and a couple of psyker squads (Coteaz in there) - they also had magical psyriflemen that were taller than the standard dreads so they could sit behind razorbacks and still have their guns be level.

He also "thought" that a vehicle that pivots in shooting phase counts as having moved when it comes to assaults. Sigh

Pretty much every time when I'm overly-warm, tired, or somewhat angry.

I get snappy under those conditions, and I don't tend to have a good time. When the dice inevitably go against me, it only adds to my foul mood. Usually these days, I know not to play under those conditions, though last time I ignored my judgment and kept playing, I ended up in a better mood and actually enjoyed myself. Unusual.
