I always thought removal of Space Marines from the gaming table as casualties didn't really reflect what would happen in real life and I decided to make some casualties to reflect the fallen.

They don't feel battered enough to me...

then again, going by the quality of your execution, I think your paintjob will do scads of good things!

what about one or two guys, that have just their extremities left? a single upright boot, one knocked over, and a hand lying around with half of a bckpack, and half of a helmet? all showing extreme melta damage...

You should plant these on a terrain board in city games, maybe you can make a cool scenario.

looks good but some of them look downright wrong. as in, they shouldn't be posed like that. though there are some really good ones. one thing i noticed was that many of them seem to have been destroyed the same way. a massive gaping hole in their chest. some of them are posed to similarly also, but should be good if you've got a good scheme in mind.

Heamonculus army - almost 500 points (more in the mail). none painted.

Not sure why a couple of them are holding their junk, but cool nonetheless

The question isn't why do I kill. The question is, why I don't kill everybody.

Ever been kicked in the crotch by a dreadnought?

it kinda makes sense to me for two reasons, the foetal position is kind of a default: usually if you've experienced some sort of extreme pain, there is a tendency to curl up (be it paying homage to the porcelain idol, on your bed, friends couch, etc.), and the armor in that area has the most weaknesses (waist joint, hip/thigh joint, and limited armor coverage/shape to avoid an awkward bow-legged gait. Then it is not very healthy to have the femoral artery cut)

I would not want to be crotched by a dreadnought... although I'd imagine a sentinel or war-walker would be worse.

In answer to some of the points raised:

Some of the poses do look similar. I see the Space Marines as superhuman and in the literature out there, wounds stop bleeding due to special secretion by the marines body. Therefore I feel only major trauma would keep them down e.g. Head shots and chest shots.

These were originally made when Cities of Death arrived. I was going to base them, but then I thought leaving them alone would allow them to be based on any war zone without looking out of place e.g. Cities base on desert landscape would look stupid.

When I decide to pick up a paint brush again, they will get done (eventually). I prefer the converting rather than painting side of the hobby. In the meantime, they will grace the storage box.

well, I certainly do have to congratulate you on the amazing models (crash-diving assault marine is the best IMO ) but I just get this nagging thought that all of this was kind of a... waste? I mean, 2 tac squads, and assault squad, a dev squad and a scout squad... all you need is an HQ and you have yourself a fully functioning army.
Now don't get me wrong, I love the models, but I just personally feel it's just too much of a waste. Maybe 4 or 5 marines, but a whole army? And coupled with gw's constantly rising prices, I cringe a bit when I look at them

Unless of course you plan on basing them and playing them as a fully functioning army that was brought back to life as zombies by the chaos gods. That would be awesome!

Moving flat out..

I think these are a great idea - as opposed to my son just knocking marines over and keeping them there.. this option would give a whole different feel to the game.

In answer to Some Total Necron Guy's questionl, this army cost approx £30.00 around 2-3 years ago. If you are careful and lucky, you can get bargains on ebay. Tac squad parts here, assault squad parts there etc. The model and parts gained over time quickly add up to a lot of figures. I have been collecting Space Marines since 1987, so I have a rather large and extensive bits box and this allowed me to kit them out cheaply. I got bored with making more and more of the same positions (I have enough RT and new Space Marines to kit out 20 Full Tactical squads, not counting the Battle for Macragge box set, 2nd edition?!? Warhammer 40k Space Marine sets and the four squads of beaky RTB01 Tactical squads). Once I get enough time to unpack and photograph my marines I'll do so.

I'll have to make some Terminator and HQ models up also at some point in the future, but my Land Raiders are my primary thought at the moment.

I was just thinking this. Not so much that it's a waste, but that it's almost a playable force. They appear to be WYSIWYG, so further modeling is all for flavor. As long as you have one standing marine to check line of sight, you could play an army of dead marines. Zombie marines are one thing, but dead marines... now THAT would be an original force.

Can't you just check LOS from face-planted assault marine's foot?

ah, nevermind then. I was just initially confused as to why someone would buy around a battleforce's worth of marines and... kill them like that. (literally ) but if you've been collecting for a long time and have loads of spare bitz, then my hat's off to you for some amazing modeling work!

just what I had in mind. You could model say, one chaos sorcerer as an HQ , maybe add a few shambling, zombie marines for LOS and you've got a really cool-looking army.

Sorry to resurrect this article after such a long time, but I thought I would share some of the completed models:

Here's the finished Scout Squad. I had a blast painting these.

This one is my favourite - some sort of melta/acid wound! The flesh has been painted with a very old GW Rotting Flesh to match my Legion of the Dead paint scheme.

This is my second favourite - a head shot!! I tried to give him a puzzled expression but I'm not the best painter in the world.

This one has been shot in the chest and bled out. I used about 3 coats of gloss varnish to try and make the blood look fresh!

This one has been shot again in the chest. SM's seem to have rolled rather badly on their save roll !!!!

And finally, the final member of the Scout Squad.

I'll post some completed Assault Squad members tomorrow.

Comments and critiques welcome.

Regards, Phil.
