I'm new myself but I can give you the low-down on what I've been told.

All armies are fairly balanced.

I personally thing that starters are a good buy (you can get them cheap from amazon or ebay) because you get a nice set of war jacks and each box starts with a decent warcaster.

Only suggestion I could give is pick up the Prime MK. II rulebook and look over everything. Make sure Cryx are what you wanna play.

My reaction was to take said die, and hurl it out the window of the 3rd floor of our student union. I then placed a Commissar model next to the rest of my dice pile. They immediately began performing much better.

The starter isn't too bad. But the Warcaster that comes in it is really focused on Debuffing. Also, the Slayer warjack that comes with it is slightly lack luster IMO

Cryx are OP. Ha jk They are very good just like any other faction you just have to know how to play it. Started sets are for the most part really good. Its a good way to start and go from there

I'm not quite sure if we're talking about the same game? pDeneghra is one of the best warcasters in entire system and Slayer is a very reliable heavy warjack that costs mere 6 points. I dare to say that Cryx starter is the best buy of all the battleboxes available.

Out of the battle boxes id give the top 2 spots to either Cryx and Protectorate to be honest

The most hilarous thing with the slayer is that you can take Mortenebra and her theme list and get slayers for just 5 points! Meaning in a standard 35 point game you can have have Mortenbra, 2 Warwitches and 7 Slayers!

Not tried it out yet as I only have 5 slayers so no idea how well it will work, but it'd look pretty daunting on the table.

We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.

Cryx seems to be a good box.

And the question of "Is Cryx Competetive"

They do have some of the big hitters of the game.

The question you should ask though, Is (insert warcaster here) Competetive.

As each warcaster has its own level of what it can do.. and how effective it is.

Every faction themselves is good, the question is, finding the correct warcaster for your playstyle and what you want.

While I don't use every piece in the battlebox in every list, the Cryx box is still a solid pickup for getting into the game.

Beyond pDenny being a great warcaster for both infantry and warjacks, you'll always find uses for an arc node or two and that Slayer can be magnetized so you can just order a couple of bits off of the Privateer Press site to make it into a Reaper or Corrupter, and pick up the Malice upgrade kit to round it off. Of course, even a pure Slayer isn't a bad investment for 6 points and gets even better in certain situations like running Mortenbra with jack spam.

Edit: As noted above, pretty much everything in the game can be competitive so long as you use them with other units that compliment their abilities. If you like Cryx then go for it, but I'd wander over to battle college to read what each one can be expected to do and then come back here or the Privateer Press forums to ask more in depth questions about those that interest you most. You can also give VASSAL a shot. It's a little cumbersome, but if you have someone that can help guide you through intro games you can get a general feel for things.
