Atheists don't believe in any of the ancient civilization gods like Ra, Thor, The Jackal, and neither do christians, it's just that last hanger-on that's causing all the issues... =)
That statement is as insane as it is ill informed.

As someone who has genuine regard for truth, honesty, reason and science. I have to say that I regard all Creationists as trolls. They genuinelly are attempting to bs millions of people on a daily basis, and yet they are the ones that act offended all the time?
Conservatives, particularly those with college educations, have become dramatically more skeptical of science over the past four decades, according to a study published in the April issue of the American Sociological Review. Fewer than 35 percent of conservatives say they have a "great deal" of trust in the scientific community now, compared to nearly half in 1974.
Be very worried my American chums.. because the Conservatives are going to drag you down a slippery slope. And these are the college educated ones!
My missus told me that the US should split into two different countries about 5 years ago, It was her words that started me looking into the whole "Creationism" phenomena in the US in the first place, as I was blissfully ignorant at the time living in nice sensible Europe. I dare say she will feel the same when her state (CA) has half the nations Science graduates and the entire bible belt is full of illiterate home schooled half-wits who burn witches.
Of course, outside having massive unemployment, creating the whole concept of the nanny state,a chronic massively high crime rate, and being effectively insolvent, California is doing just fine.
Oh and your stat above on science grads is full of gak.

Very nice, but lacking in any kind of proof or evidence that anything they are saying is in any way... well... true. Kind of like if I put up a web page saying that after we die everyone comes back as a Tribble (though we know Tribbles are real, so I suppose that is at least something in the favour of my own personal interpretation of life after death ).
Long live Kirk, saviour of mankind (and Tribbles)!

At least now you have an idea of what I believe. There's a lot I take on faith, and if you think about it, faith has been a great motivator in civilization.
Yes a lot of evil has happened in the name of faith, but a lot of good has also happened.

in essence, "damnation" is a misnomer. the fire and brimstone thing is really to convey an emotion, not an actual lake of fire. the bible says hell is a place of eternal torment, not torTURE. meaning its all self inflicted. no ones going to poke you with a pitch fork.
as for purpose, well I think we might differ on that. God has a purpose for all things (ALL things good and bad) and its up to us to follow through with it or not.

It doesn't change that a perfectly good non-believer somehow ends up in a place where he is "tormented", simply because he didn't believe in the G-man/men...

Half the reason California's in its current mess is their fondness for referendums. When given the chance, people tend to vote for more services and less taxes every time.

The tone of our posts was such that I thought we could engage in some banter, whilst I did not feel I could post that way with Relapse - my reply to Relapse above was made in a tone that I would not have chosen to use if I had realised it was him I was responding to, rather than yourself.
Video of Adam Savage at the Reason Rally. Excellent, eloquent speech. We need more people like that around to avoid going back to the Dark Ages as seems to be the desire of a frightening lot of people these days.

Look at it in the context of a father that has well loved children that he wants to one day be elevated to positions of responsibility. He sends the children to learn and develop personalities and act according to the childrens nature. The children then one day return to recieve the position or report they came up short.
The ones that come up short are going to feel uncomfortable in the presence of their father and the siblings that accomplished the primary goal.
The father arranges other positions of honor for them according to their performance because even if they didn't accomplish the goals, they are still his children and he loves them to the point where he will have them as close to him as they can be.

Much of it is in the open, though that's not by the Discovery Institute's choice.
And a conspiracy that fails is no less a conspiracy. Seriously, read up on those donkey-caves sometime. Their agenda's pretty twisted.
You want to talk about twisted agenda's. have you seen National Organization for Marriage's, leaked documents?
Its their goal to pit the gays against the blacks and hispanics. Then they're offering $250,000 for anyone raised by a gay couple to speak out against them.

While certainly despicable, NOM's agenda worries me a lot less; gay marriage is a demographic inevitability. We're just waiting on everyone currently over 55 to die, and then it'll pass nationwide in a landslide, with the possible exception of Mississippi.

Yep.
Most people know what's good for them, individually, most of the time. Most people don't know what's good for them, collectively, most of the time.

It's not insane, it's just an old and obvious rhetorical point, not meant to be taken literally, expressing that it's not a binary choice between your god or unbelief.

I don't think so, and I think if committed atheists want to become politically relevant that committing to reason and science is about their best bet; basically a reaction to fundamentalism (they'll need some branding, though). Obviously the implication is that theists are not reasonable in that particular belief, but the ground regarding the absence of proof in God/gods has been sufficiently mapped out that it shouldn't really be considered an insult (though it often used as such) because, while there are reasons to believe in God, they're mostly of the emotional sort that don't generally get bound up in "reason".
As for tearing down other faiths, there are plenty of Church gatherings every day in which it is implied that atheists, and people of other religions, are going to hell; be it a real place or a state of mind.

I don't exactly feel the need to justify myself on one mans speech.
