Hey guys, this is more posed towards Americans on the forum, and the question is, Has anyone encountered anybody who feels the mid west and south are backwards and useless? I live in NY and i know many people who feel that way, one of which goes on to declare that the only states worth anything are California, NY, and D.C.(which i went on to explain was not a state....). He says that because to him the entirety of the south and mid west is backwards, Conservative, and stupid. I struggle to try and convince him that places like texas, and all states are all big part of the US and that he is a moron for thinking those three states could survive on their own. He would go on to say his reasoning is because NY, Cali, and D.C. are the only ones tourists want to see. . So fellow Dakka members what do you all think?

Many in the South say the same things about the North or West Coast. Although it may be more oriented towards being liberal eggheads or some other nonsense. I think each region has it's idiots that hate the other regions. Then of course there is Texas, which has disdain for everyone.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Most people I know don't hate the south. We just think it's too hot down there.

Well, we do need the South and Midwest, unless of course the Northeast/West Coast wants to trade and pay tariffs and all that stuff that goes on when trading with a foreign nation for what they used to get from those states.

Doesn't mean those places aren't full of backward hicks.

Well, as one of the 'Backward Hicks', i'd like to point out not all of us fit the cookie cutter sterotype you're friend has.
I'm not a Conservative for example. i also don't believe all you 'Damn Yankees' are all complete tools.

Speaking from a European pov, I think the hate for the perceived "red necks" is entirely reasonable.

When you see some douchebag saying grossly offensive things about "oversea's folks" Its never a nice liberal from San Fransisco is it?

As you all know, Ive lived and worked with Americans for years, and my missus is one. No other country is as close to my heart, and I met some proper good lads in the USAF, but I did meet a few truly idiotic, ignorant, bigoted individuals, and they were almost always deep accented Southern blokes who think that "Europeans are all queer" or some such nonsense.

Those bible bashing deep south passportless types give my American chums a bad name. I lived in CA for two years and I didn't meet a single person that was as annoying as several members of the Oklahoma national guard. And according to those lads, Arkansas is even worse if your not into going to Church like me.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

don't throw all of us Okies in such a light. i know the ANG members you met didn't help.

Many in the larger Midwestern cities also express this sentiment. Just as someone from Chicago how they feel about downstate Illinois, Indiana, or Iowa.

In general, while there's definitely a lot of regionalism (I went to school with plenty of people who called everything between the East and West coasts "flyover country."), I think its more a matter of urban versus rural than anything else.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

Meh, whatever. Kind of fun either way when you point out when someone says "The South will rise again!" that there IS a reason why the missles are in the north and the population heavy bases are in the south....

Well, since your friend is VERY clearly a liberal, his opinion doesn't matter.

Just kidding.

I'm from NY, lived in SC, TX, and currently reside in FL. I also resided in Southern California and Las Vegas NV for a short while.

It's easy to make generalizations about people when you've never been somewhere or met more than 'a couple' of people from a single geographical location. Your friend obviously has no idea what he is talking about. I've lived in both rural and urban areas of the states listed above (except CA and NV) and found that (if you actually put effort into talking to people) there are people born and raised there with all different political and social viewpoints. Granted, there are areas where either liberalism or conservatism is predominate, but just because New York is known for being a liberal state, doesn't mean that everyone there is a liberal. I'm not, and I lived there for 20 years.

While the east and west coasts provide some useful functions, for the most part they're useless eaters that simply consume the foodstuff and goods produced in the better part of the country (that is, everything out of California and the NE).

I really could care less if NY and LA were wiped off the map, and I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have much effect on the rest of us.

And I'm not the only one...

I'm always mocking my girlfriend (who is German) by saying "Dis would NEVAH happen in Djermanee!" at her.

Though to be fair she's not so bad.
But when you emigrate you tend to compare stuff to your home country, it's just human nature. I do it all the time. (Usually the UK comes out toppers, even with all the Chavscum).

South of the US ranks high on my places-to-visit. Sounds like it's got awesome food, interesting wildlife and gorgeous scenery. (Course, north US is equally on my places-to-visit list.)
And one of my best friends is out in the mid-west, and he says it's grand.

People hate on the south because everyone needs to feel better than someone else, and there aren't many people that you're allowed to openly hate due to prejudice and stereotypes.

I say that as someone born and raised in New England.

To be fair, being at the heart of the Civil Rights Movement is also a factor, and explains the whole "The South is backwards and racist." thing to some extent.

The redneck stereotype that gets associated with the South is, I think, more about "rural" than anything else.

Agreed.

I can point you in the direction of people out in the sticks in NH that are every bit as ignorant and racist as any southern stereotype.
