I am now starting WOC (yay!), and owing to a lack of money (boo!), have decided to start of at 1000pts. Also, a double tournament is at that level, so getting 'em ready seems like a good way to learn the army.

Ok, so, business. What do you guys think will be a good investment at 1000pts. I would like a Warrior heavy army, but that is not those are not the only unit that I want to include.

Warrior heavy is nice.

Hero I would go with hero mot dragon helm shield tali of endurance and iron curse icon works he has a 2+ armor a 4+ ward an a 2+ ward against flaming.
Maybe a lvl 2 sorcerer.

But ya give it a read over that should give you some ideas.

for troops I would get a couple of 18 man Warrior blocks.

Either go MoT and Shields or MoK and Halberds if you want the best choices. if you are going for fluffy then any mark is ok.

Any reason for 18 man units, or does it just work well? What formation are you thinking?

18 man units are run 6 wide and 3 deep. The reason being is that it allows you to get another warrior into combat vs. your standard 5 wide and 20mm based infantry. 20mm bases for infantry is fairly common.

Its also easy to make units that size out of the packages GW has them in(packs of 12)

you get 3 boxs of warriors and you have 2 units of 18.



In larger games you can up the size to 24 warriors(4 ranks of 6)

Warriors at 1000pts...

Two units of 18 warriors, full command, marks, maybe banners + new sorceror model as a lvl 2 with gear= roughly 1000pts :p if you want to hit 1000 as quickly (and economically) as possible that would be about 120 dollars

personally i would buy the army battallion, gives you a little of everything for 100 bucks.

You have to have 3 units, not counting heroes.

In smaller games, I like:
Level 2 on a chariot with charmed shield and dawn stone (2+ re-rollable save)
18 Warriors with Halberds
30 Marauders with great weapons, mark of khorne
2x5 mounted marauders with flails, light armor, and mark of Slaanesh
1 chaos spawn, or a ~50 point magic banner

That lands you right around 1000 points. Gives you 2 units that hit hard, and support fast cav + chariot.

A T4 2+ save general with re-rollable armor save is pretty durable for 1,000 points; and it gives you a bit of magic too. In a challenge you get 4 S4 and 2S5 attacks, which is decent for the points.

At 1K points, I'd take lore of fire. The signature spell scales up nicely, so should you roll up 10+ power dice, you can effectively use them all. In lower die magic phases, you can scale down and still get a spell off.

18 man units are really the best thing I have not had very many issues with them at all.

At 1k 12 will do with no real problems that way you can squeeze in a potential 3 units.

Personally I would be tempted to go with a hero at this level because there would be very little that could stand up to him.

But go with a unit of halberds with the flaming banner for sure those guys will either 1 be the scary SOB's that no one wants to fight since well they are scary SOB's and if I can avoid it ill try not to fight them.
Second reason oh regen you say I think not and most beasties have regen like trolls or HPA's hydras anyways ya those guys are your hammer and you will like them after they just tear a unit to little tiny bits of what they used to be.

Mot with shields is your armor those guys take all the opponent can dish out and keep their $#it together no matter how bad things go (rap standard for larger games).

Might as well go with a battalion.
They are very economic you save yourself something like 50 dollars (roughly).

Knights at 1k would be interesting if those guys dont get killed on their way to combat them you should be just fine.

War hounds are great redirecters especially in combo with knights makes it easy to hit a unit in the flank.

20 marauders isnt a bad start flails or great weapons means they are packing some heat.

12 warriors as said tz or mok (personally I like mot halberds and flaming banner since they dont charge randomly and that 6+ ward is nice to have against scary stuff it may not seem like much but your rank and file guy has a 6+ is awesome make 2 of those saves and the mark has earned its points).

Sorcerer is always good times the chaos marks are not bad death can be fun fire is a meh (the sorcerer models are cool tho).

Maybe a hero just to try it out since they are pretty beastly as is with a little bit of points invested in him he can do a lot for ya.

My friend uses WoC to great effect with, I think, a scorcerer, 15 marauders w/flails, 18 MoT Sword n Board warriors, 5 marauder horsemen, 2x5 Warhounds and a 5 man unit of MoK knights at 1000pts

I like the idea of those smaller warrior units, as they allow me to take more stuff.

I'll think I'll nick bits from all of those lists.

Mok knights at this level will shred stuff seriously they are scary even in larger games.

Sorcerer is a good idea maybe put the third eye on him to give him some fun spells possibly.

I've already bought some knights, they're just that cool.

What do you guys think about Champions, especially as I'm planning to take a Warshrine.

Personally I love knights they are great fun I run 7 plus jugger lor

A battalion is a great buy.

Knights are cool and are awesome.
Warriors they are warriors amazing.
Marauders 20 marauders down 30 to go and you have a big awesome unit.

And hounds can be used as unit fillers for marauders or as directers which is nice

By Champions I mean unit champions.

I'm not a huge fan of them with the must make and accept challenges rule. In a unit with a caster I don't want in combat perhaps yes.
And smaller units of marauders aren't too bad. 20-25 with flails on the flanks is threatening enough the opponent either goes for them ignoring your warriors, or goes for the warriors and takes a flank charge from the marauders.
Cowpow has hit the nail on the head about the batallion and units you get in it. You can build an army up just by buying a few of them over time and a couple of characters really. Any knights not used the parts work well in future conversions, especially warshrines and save money in the long run.
Get them from a discount retailer and it works out even cheaper and there's a fair few in the UK

Unit champtions are a must if you have a Character in the unit. If you don't have a champion then your Character has to Issue or Accept a challange. the Champion can do it instead and keep your character alive(there are things out there that can wipe the floor with Exaulted Champions and Wizards. About the only thing a Chaos Lord has to worry about is a tooled up Ogre Tyrant, Bloodthirster, or possably a Dreadlord.

I kind of wish I had bought 2 battalions but oh well t is a good buy currently I am using everything in he battalion.
The lances let you make halberd warriors later on which is awesome.

I have unit champs since why not they are almost hero level when compared to other races and mine have been useful.

You can't go wrong a battalion or 2 even if you want an allwarrior list you will see how awesome and fun marauders are and hounds are great.
