I'm new to Wh40K and as a result know not much. I was wondering what the other races were. I'v played SM and my friend plays Orks but thats about it. What are the main points of the Imperial Guard, Tau, Necron, Eldar and Tyrannids? What are they? What are some of their characteristics? How many points are they (for basic troops)? etc. Thanks.

Not sure that Inquisitors are a separate race

The only races I don't really like are the Dark Eldar and the Tau (though at least DE look pretty cool). The others all have their plus points.

Inquisitors, Marines and Guard are all the same race!

I'm aware that IG, Inquisitors and Marines are all humans, but they differ greatly from what I know. The SM are SuperHuman the IG are like Orks (I believe) and the inquisitors are like.........

The IG are like Orks?? That's a rather interesting take on them, I guess. (the IG are not like Orks.)

Why not go to a store and skim through the codices? Barring that, Lexicanum is your (factually dubious) friend.

Best race how? Fluff wise? Power (gaming perspective) only? With best looking miniatures?
I don't think that asking for point cost is allowed at this forum. The general idea is - you want exact point cost or rules / statistics - go buy yourself a codex. We do however can help you in more general queries.

Not really, because of the modifications the marines are considered a separate race generally.

Confused

Orks are argueably the funnest, most customiseable race you can play as. Their fluff is funny, their models are good, they're reasonably competitive-they're probably one of the best armies all round. However, if you choose a fun list you can find them difficult to win with. The large amount of models needed also makes them boring to paint when making lists with lots of Boys, but their tanks and specialised infantry are very fun to put together and paint.

Marines are easy to play, have good models and some chapters (GK, BA & SW) are very competitive. Painting them is easy and there's a lot of freedom with what you can do. Unfortunately their fluff comes under a lot of criticism, often claimed to present them as unbeatable badasses or Mary Sues. And Draigo. However mostly it's all blown out of proportion by internet hyperbole.

Guard are also a good all-round army. Their codex is well-written and you can make a lot of competitive armies out of it, their fluff has very few issues and most of their models are good (however not awe-inspiring). However, their codex has a mix of horrificaly overpowered units (vendetta gunships, Hydras) and units that are entirely useless (Penal Legionnares, Deathstrikes, Mogul Kamir, all Leman Russ variants except basic, Demolishers and Executioners to name a few) which can make games either too easy or too hard for newer players. However, once you ignore all the terrible options they become very competitive indeed. Unfortunately they are boring to paint due to the large amount of models needed.

Eldar are the finess army. Or the unforgiving army, depending on how you look at it. Because of the difiiculty to paint and even greater difficulty to play, they're better left to more seasoned players. On the upside, their fluff is good and a well painted Eldar army looks stunning.

Dark Eldar have one of the most well-written codices ever produced by GW, and models to match. Their fluff hits the spot perfectly and their models are beautiful, while their units are varied and have few weak choices. In the hands of a good player they can also be extremely powerful. However, they're a glass cannon-they can dish out a lot of firepower but can't absorb much in turn. For this reason they can be punishing to new players. Also, unless you happen to be a proffesional painter you'll struggle to do their models justice.

Tau haven't aged well. While fun to paint, they're incredibly difficult to win with and have very little fluff whatsoever. They have a few good units, such as Broadsides, Hammerheads and Crisis suits, but the rest ranges from mediocre (Pirahnas, Kroot, Stealth suits, Pathfinders) to absolutely terrible (Fire Warriors, Ethereals, Skyrays, all special characters).

Necrons...just ignore Necrons until their new codex comes out.

I don't have any experience against Sisters, but I'd advise you wait for their full codex and new model range.

One of my favourite parts about the game is the Ork's Looted Wagon. The reason is the way it can ber built.

I have a friend with a battle wagon that is a Land Raider with a Railgun on top, and the Big Shoota Orks with AOBR for Sponsons. Some may argue it is an illegal unit because it is smaller and custom built.

With the Looted Wagon, you can pick ANY vehicle, except maybe the Cron Monolith or drop pod, or a walker, and call it a Looted Wagon. Leman Russ, Predator, Basilisk, Vindicator, Falcon, Hammerhead. Anything.

Nope. You can loot a Monolith, or a Drop Pod. There's actually someone on Arakasi's Trukk rally thread doing a Drop-pod trukk.

ONly thing with a Walker is that you'd have to give it wheels or tracks. I'd rather love to see a looted Defiler, actually...

Your choice should configure with you play style, doyou like to sitback and shoot? Charge forth in glorious assault? Swarm over your enemy with hordes? Or control a smaller more elite army? it all depends on what style YOU want to play.

Imperial gaurd are the military of the imperium. SoB and daemonhunters (grey knights) are sort of like the CIA, finding traitors and heretics.
Orks are a race born only for war. In fact, they thrive on it.
Tyranids are a race that seek only to devour everything (hence the name the great devourer). They are constantly mutating and evolving.
Eldar are an ancient and gracful race whose worlds were destroyed long ago. The dark eldar are there counter part, and are raiders who love pain and torture.
Tau are a fairly new race whose technology is surprisingly advanced. They sort of follow the governemnt of communism.
Lastly, necrons were once a big civilization who saught eternal life. They had their bodies put into machines to dothis.

It's kind of a rock, paper, scissors kind of thing in my mind. Some races seem designed to beat another race, but struggle against others.
That being said, my all around favorite to play since they came out are De, due to their ability to speed all over the field and create general havoc.
This is followed closely by Necrons, for, strangely enough, the same reason.
I've lost very few games with either, and have won more than my share of tournaments with them.

IF you're looking for a good starting army, you can get vannilla Space Marines. You can build many different armies with it, it's quite good and it's fun to paint. IG is a bit more complicated to paint and has more models, but it's a killer with its large number of heavy weapons and the totally amazing melta-vets. Orks are fun to paint and more fun to play, but have a LOT of models. Those three you may like. The others are more suited for experienced players, specially both kinds of Eldar.

OK Thanks everybody. I have gotten a couple of links to read up on.
The IG are like Orks?? That's a rather interesting take on them, I guess. (the IG are not like Orks.)

I have heard that the IG come in numbers, like Orks. I may be wrong but that is the impression of that I get from reading various Codex's.
Your choice should configure with you play style, doyou like to sitback and shoot? Charge forth in glorious assault? Swarm over your enemy with hordes? Or control a smaller more elite army? it all depends on what style YOU want to play.

In response, I prefer to have a well rounded army, one that can change their playstyle for every different opponent they face with just a few changes to the armylist.
Umm, aren't Marines actually considered NON-humans?

Yes they are.
IF you're looking for a good starting army, you can get vannilla Space Marines.

What are 'vannilla' SM. Are they a different chapter?

Marines are superhuman - they are the best of humanity.

However I would say Tyranids are they best - they are fearless, numberless, willing to adapt, and single minded. They will get the job done...
