Hi. My name is fistbeard. I don't actually have a fist for a beard. In fact, I find it difficult to grow much of a beard at all. It's quite tragic, but if I had to endure a beard in the Texas heat, I'd probably shave it all off anyway.
Whelp, I think that just about covers all the nitty gritty personal details! I've actually got quite a few questions to ask and I figured I might as well post them in this thread so I don't just plug up some other forums with my ignorance. Efficiency, ya dig?
After approx. 5 years of not having a single thought about 40k, I suddenly got the itch to start throwing my money at this hobby again. I've been away from it for a long time though, so I need a bit of clarification on a few issues. Deep breath aaaannndd.... GO!
1) Which army is currently the most up to date? I assume SM are still the favored sons of GW and are being update regularly.
2) What is the current state of the black templars? I was building a BT army when I quit and still have the majority of it laying around. I think I have something like a tac squad, assault squad, dread, predator, rhino, and high marshal. I also have the black templar, SM, and armageddon codices laying around. I'm pretty sure they're all from around 2005. Are they still the most current or has a new codex been released?
2.1) The problem with my BT army is that the majority of it is painted and pretty poorly at that. Is there a way to strip models of their paint without ruining the plastic or am I better off starting fresh?
3) I really, really enjoy the collecting and painting aspect of the hobby and simply like to play games once I've collected enough to field an army. I like the black templar units and lore but I'm open to pretty much any SM chapter. That and orks have really caught my eye as of late. Would it be a bad idea to buy that assault on black reach kit as a way of getting back into things and seeing which army I like better?
4) If you could offer any advice to a returning played (besides oh god run away and save your money), what would it be?
Phew. You're a saint if you manage to read all that, let alone respond to it. It's great to be a part of these forums guys. I'm gonna go stare at the painting and modeling showcase and drool for a bit

Welcome to Dakka. Question answering powers activate!
1) The most recent update is the SoB in WD format however the most recent full codex is the Grey Knight codex.
2) BT are currently fairly strong due to an FAQ update, they aren't top tier but they are a viable army.
2.1) I don't know the precise details but it is possible to strip a model without damaging it. See the P&M section for details. Try searching Tutorials for detailed information.
3) AoBR is a good deal. If you like BT you should collect them. If you also like Orks you could collect them as well (Have two smallish armies growing at the same rate)
4) Don't cross the streams.
And with that i leave you...
Here's a sing-song to make you happy.

Thanks for the detailed response! I definitely think I'll stick with BT for now and pick up that chapter upgrade with all the cloaks and neat visual accessories that make them look so black templar-y. I guess the biggest thing I need to take care of is replacing my hobby tools and paints. All of my paints are completely dried out and my brushes are hard as steel. Are GW paints the ones I should be buying? I've heard about other lines of paints here and there that people seem to enjoy.
Also, that song never fails to put me in a good mood, even when I'm stuck at work.
It is a nice song...
GW paints are good. There are others out there but i tend to use GW paints because it's less hassle.

Haha I'll probably stick with GW paints then. I'm guessing I'll need about 4-5 paints and a wash or two to get started. Gonna try to ease myself back into this thing and just paint a few units at a time. Staring at a huge, unpainted force can be soul-crushingly overwhelming

I know what you mean! I've bought battleforces to start armies before, and some of which I haven't finished >.< Necrons got so boring, all the silver and green...but Orks are way more fun

Army Painter makes the perfect products for this dillema with their colored primer and dip you can complete entire armies in an afternoon or two. Also, I highly recommend picking up the GW wash set if you can find it as all the washes are useful. Some more than others so if you're only able to get one or two, Devlan Mud and Badab Black are very, very helpful.
Don't eliminate Vallejo or P3 paints from your pallete either, both are excellent brands.
What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money
