I just thought of something, if you buy the AoBR starter set, you get the mini rulebook...right?
So if you buy a battle force shouldn't you get a mini codex? the same way they did the rulebook, leave out the fluff, and just get the army special rules, and wargear...etc...

has anyone else thought of this idea?

It could make the difference between buy or no buy for me.

Every Dakkanaught gets a 4+ Pinch of Salt save.
When you suffer a Falling Sky hit, roll a D6 - on a 4+ the hit is ignored as per the Pinch of Salt save. On a 1-3 panic insues - you automatically fail common sense tests for the next 2 weeks and get +7 to your negativity stat. -Praxiss

That's exactly my opinion, that way if you're starting a second army, and already know a good chunk of fluff, you don't really need the fluffy part.

This wouldn't make a difference to me.

Also, some people (like me) buy multiple battle forces for the same army as it's generally a good way to load up on troops... So, the value might not be there.

But it would sure be something you could sell on, even if you didn't need it. I think it would be a big draw.

The problem with that would be sales. How many people after getting the mini rulebook actually go onto buy the big one? The same would go for the codex. If you already have the rules that you need for the army why bother with going and spending more money for story that you don't need and half of it you probably don't even want to read. I like your idea and I think it would be great but that is why I think GW never will.

Exactly. However, I think we should take this a little further, and say the mini-dex only includes the rules and stats for the units in the battleforce. And maybe include an entry for one HQ, so that people can get that and field the battleforce. That way you can play using those units, but you need to buy the full codex to play a true army.

I started both my armies with Battleforces and Codices. Of course, mini codex would be a good idea, but GW definitely won't make it.But something similar to mini-codex is on the last pages of 40k rulebook. Alas, with old stats and without special abilities.

Well, they printed a mini rulebook with all the rules, the still sell rulebooks. They could have given you something with just AoBR rules, but you have the complete rulebook. Maybe they should instead of battleforce boxes with a Codex, have similar to AoBR sets with different races, like GK vs BA or Nids vs IG with a mini rule and a no fluff codex, people buy multiple battleforces, but would not be intrested in buying 2 AoBR like sets, so that would eliminate extra codex and rules. This set idea would almost force you to buy more, look how well AoBR did for the game, I mean that is how I started 40k and like 3-4 of my friends started, it was AoBR cheap fun easy.

I would wholly support this. That would make is so easy to carry around a quick reference to make quick lists and stuff. Not to mention the codexes could be switched up a bit, and include more fluff an pictures... Good idea, OP

I think it's quite a nifty idea, but unfortunately I don't see it happening because it coud mean less people buying the big codices.

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

Too much work goes into the Codex for them to allow even a chance to hurt codex sales. The codex prices are inching up beyond what I might consider reasonable but...that is another issue.

Does the battleforce boxes come like AOBR boxes were there mostly put together or do they come like the individual boxes of units were you can change the pose's without having to bust out a saw

They come as if you just bought say the ork battleforce, 20 orks, 3 bikes and a truck, they come with all the options and all the parts. just like if you bought them all separately.

Since I already have my codex. I would probly just give the mini-codex to friends. But it would be a good way to sell me on buying battleforces.

Quoted from "The Defenestrator":
"Yes, I don't buy into the goody goody image the Tau PR machine has churned out . They're all dirty cold-blooded space-communists if you ask me! Besides, their shiny, selfless "we love everyone for the Greater Good" vibe is so unfitting for the "lulz we're all badass jerks" future of 40k. GW needs to play up their cold, calculating, "join us or die, and probably still die anyway" Borg-y style. That's just me of course."

Codices are already going to sell themselves if you want to play that army. Why lose out on a $30 sale by putting a mini version in the battleforce? I don't have any sales information here, but there's a reason they release a hardback rulebook before the starter set comes out. This way they sell a separate hardback one for people already in the game and when someone new shows up they can just start with the mini one.

An interesting related tidbit - some old vehicle kits in 2nd edition came with rules. I got a whirlwind way back when that came with rules for it. Track armor 22!

What I would like to see battle forces become is a complete starter set. So if someone asks, "what do I need to start playing?" People can just direct them towards a Battle forces even if it means they are a little more expensive. I think they should fill the required FOC so you could in theory just buy the box and play. This is something you can't do with most of the battle forces and even the AOBR space marine army at least doesn't fill the minimum required FOC (I think that is just daft).

So for example for BA it would include

HQ
Librarian

Troops
15x Assault marines

Transport
1x Razorback

For SOB

HQ
St Celestine or Canoness

Troop
20x SOB

Transport
1x Rhino

For orks;

HQ
War boss

Troops
22 x Boyz
2x Nobz

Transport
2x truck

As long as a boxed set comes with a disclaimer, like:
"To properly use this set, you must have a miniature to fill the HQ slot".
Better worded, of course.

Buying more than one box is often useful, but having lots of the same HQ is not.

As for having more than 1 codex, you can hand them around your club, and it helps your opponents know your army. Good or bad, it's an option.
You can't build a fluffy army if you don't know the fluff.
