For you, what is Warhammer/40k/Warmachine/Hordes/ etc etc etc

Is it purely for the gaming, or purely for the painting, or do you rest somewhere in the middle?

EDIT: I forgot to add Mostly Painting and Somewhere in the middle, it wont let me add them now, help?

I paint but only to play the game with fully painted armies. I love seeing fully painted and arrayed units annihilating each other on the battle fields of the 41st millenium or in the Khadoran borderlands.

The aspect I enjoy is actually "Playing with Painted models."
When I look back at the years i've gamed, my favorite games whether competitive, or not, involved both players having full painted armies. I really love playing the most, but I derive a degree of satisfaction deployment and gaming with a fully painted army.

There is always a certain amount of wow factor deploying a cohesive, and cleanly painted army. It feel right. While I chose the mostly playing option, because lets face, it, I don't think i'd collect purely to paint, I think a 4th option should really be up there.

Mostly painting for me. I don't get in games very often, but paint quite frequently. Though collecting is a pretty big draw for me as well.

I would say painting but since child number one arrived, there hasn't been much of that recently (some of it due to apathy as much as anything) and I don't really get much time to play games either. I suppose I fall into the elusive 'collector' category; in as much as I am a serial hoarder and planner of projects that remain unfulfilled.

I rest somewhere in between. I love spending free time painting my beloved Orcs listening to some good music, and then taking my beloved (painted) Orcs and smash someone's army with them. Listening to some good music.

Both and more. I like the playing, painting, background, developing new tactics and strategies, and talking about all of the above. More than that, my hobby is more than the sum of it's parts.

My favorite part is actually construction/conversion. As I've moved away from GW, I've missed the LEGO-like process of assembly and the ease of conversion of plastic figs. However, even with metal figs I often try head and weapon swaps and such and I still build of terrain from toys and junk so I do get my conversion fix.

Second is playing, and I agree with NJPC in the specificity of "playing with painted armies". I have nearly zero interest in playing with unpainted armies now. Playing has also taken on a new appeal in that I've founded a small gaming group/club with some folks that I enjoy hanging out with.

Third is Collecting. I've tried to stay away from this, but I'm a sucker for a really good deal on cool older/indie figs. I've probably got as many unpainted figs than painted figs. Like Filbert, I've got quite a number of unfinished projects.

Painting is not a process I enjoy that much, though I do enjoy the results and seeing them game table. More of a means to an end for me.

I love to paint, so for me it's mostly painting. The game is fun and hanging out with friends makes it even better, but I often go for weeks without really wanting to play.

I do love to see armies I've painted for people on the field though.

I love to play (i play 1-2 a week) but i'm not too fond of painting.

I love nicely painted armies, but i'm a really slow painter, with little to no artistic ability

I do find painting relaxing though, and a good way to shunt migraines.

My wife likes painting, but doesn't play that often. (She generally pastes me when we do play though )

Collecting, assembling, converting, painting, playing, building pieces of slimy terrain and the Dakka forums are all equal parts of the hobby for me.
It's why I love the hobby so much. It's so versatile. When you are bored of painting you can play a game. Bored of that? Make some terrain. The possibilities are endless and I enjoy everything about it.

This poll seems like an obvious attempt at flame-bait.

Why try to point out the (sometimes great) diversion between what we love about our hobby?

Playing the game is the main reason that I participate in wargaming.

I really enjoy converting models when I have good bits to do it with.

Painting is a chore for me. Sometimes I get into moods where I really enjoy it, but I could play with grey armies and against grey armies and not really care. I paint my armies slowly, mostly because most other guys who play at my FLGS have painted armies, and because I have paint nights with some of my wargaming friends where we all get together to paint and show off our work to each other.

Right in the middle for me. I love the satisfaction of a well painted army or mini, and this is doubled when its on a nice battlefield teaching the enemy a good lesson.

Well, I generally play only with painted minis - GW standard (3 or more colors) but recently I tend to paint bases only.

QFT. That being said, even though I probably suck much worse than you, I do somewhat like the painting aspect. Just wish I was a bit better at it.

Mostly playing. A little modeling. I'm a terrible painter, and I don't enjoy it. I only paint them because it aggravates me to play with unpainted models.
