Hey guys,

Just wondering what you guys think are some of the more brutal, savage and barbaric loyalist chapters out there, that is not the Space Wolves (as they're kinda the iconic 'the barbarian' chapter)?

Dont get me wrong, Wolves are one of my favourite chapters but I was just wondering what other options there are out there, Loyalists who share a similar, feral or savage nature of the Wolves.

Here are my thoughts,

White Scars - being based on feudal Mongolians, I say they come pretty close.

Flesh Tearers - They're the Blood Angels, but not as pretty. Probably my favourite successor chapter of the Blood Angels, hell, their feral home planet has dinosaurs!

Space Sharks (or Carcharodons Astra) - Also a really brutal chapter. I like the idea but I think their chapter colours of grey and more grey is too similar to the Wolves (and by that, painting alot of grey is kinda boring)

Your thoughts?

Flesh Tearers - they butchered Orks and then butchered Armageddon militia that fight beside them.

Skulltakers - they have obsession for polishing their armor with bones of their slayed enemies.

Sons of Malice - their ritual was eating Human flesh. They killed SoB Celestians and then ate their Inquisitor.

It's probably the Flesh Tearers. They're known for tearing through allies to get at the enemy. It's the reason Seth keeps 'em far away from anything that's not a Flesh Tearer or a target.

I don't know a lot about the 40k fluff but isn't there a chapter called the Flesh Eaters that are about as brutal as you can get?

What about the world eaters Angron got it so everyone got a chip in their heads like he got while a gladiator which increased agressiveness ... and then they stated to follow khorne which turned Kharn from a good tactical soldier (in the world eaters) into what he is today.

World Eaters are LEGION, not a CHAPTER.
And they have no competition at all when it comes to barbarity.

The Sons of Malice spring to mind, but they've since been excommunicated. Still, depending on the timeline you could still play them as loyalist Marines. That said, the sources in which they were mentioned also described that cannibalistic rituals are "not uncommon" amongst Astartes, so I'm not too sure if they were really that special. It could well be that any Chapter which recruits from a Feral World (which is quite a number) may adopt some of the locals' barbaric practices - maybe this helps when looking for similar examples?

I don't really consider Space Wolves brutal/barbaric. Maybe in appearance/customs, but in terms of their relations with the Imperium at large they come off as one of the more civil chapters.

Flesh Tearers take this in any regard. Danger to everyone around them.

Eye of Terra.

Space Marines with 'feral' proclivities would almost always be considered near-renegade and almost certainly be watched closely by the Inquisition if they were aware of those issues.

Firstly, I haven't read anything about the White Scars, but if they hold to the 'Mongol Horde' archetype they most definately aren't feral. The Mongol Horde was not a mass of crazy horsemen running down hapless civilians. the Mongols were not only exceptional horsemen, but solid foot troops that literally outfought everyone they faced strategically and tactically. The horse and that animals mobilty gave the Mongols the seeming ability to appear everywhere at once. Those actions were highly coordinated movements by skilled tacticians. The use of the horse and high mobility is what the White Scars take from them in the form of the Space Marine biker idea.

The Blood Angels with their, imho, extreme gene deviancy are tolerated for a lot of reasons not least of which is the BA's loyal self-regulation. The BA and the other foundings based off of their gene-seed form a fairly tight brotherhood. Most of those Chapters have resigned themselves to extinction, but due to the fluff stasis provided by GW they appear to be constant.

The Space Wolves are another case entirely. They were the way they are now before and since the heresy despite their gene seed issues. What we might consider feral activities the Wolves deliberately foster to give the impression that they are out of control and to good effect. They aren't 'feral' in the least and many times throughout the fluff it is mentioned that the Wolves are controlled aggresion incarnate. Highly intelligent use of applied force and are completely loyal to the IoM. They have 'policed' themselves as well where their gene-seed is concerned.

I guess their are some chapters that one might consider 'feral' and are still functioning, but maybe it's the use of the word that's confusing me or the context.

Now, with all that in mind, there are Chapters that are just crazy, some of them mentioned here. However, if you are looking for Chapters who use force bordering on complete butchery, consider the Minotaurs. They are mysterious, have powerful tools and weaponry beyond explanation (read their fluff) and definately take their role as attack dogs too far for some tastes... even for the Space Wolves I would think.

I never pictured Space Wolves as brutal.

I always got the impression they loved to drink, fight, tell sagas, bed tons of women, drink some more, fight some more, tell more tales and add numbers everytime they bring up a horde they beat.

Blood Angels seem to be more along the lines of brutal for notable chapter with their own dexes. Angels fight insanity brought on by a curse that Horus placed upon them, along with a bloodlust that Khorne's foremost general inflicted upon them. With two forms of insanity fighting for control of an already warlike mind, it's easy to see how Flesh Tearers and other Angel successors are pretty out there.

But most brutal, savage, etc belongs to the followers of Chaos I'd imagine.

"AM are bunch of half human-half robot monkeys who keep tech working by punching it with a wrench And their tech is so sophisticated that you could never get it wrapped it out" thing a LITTLE to seriously. It also goes "Tau tech is so awesome I wish I was Tau and not some stupid Human" thing.

I always got the picture that what the Space Wolves love, they love to its fullest... Ie. when they drink, they drink to oblivion. Their sagas must be the most OTT, outrageous stories ever imagined, etc.

I would agree with the sentiments that the Minotaurs and guys like the Flesh Tearers are up there as one's to keep a stern eye on for signs of corruption and taint.

There is a reason the SW legion were the Emperor's executioners.

Brutal? Flesh Tearers.

Malevolent? Unsurprisingly, Marines Malevolent.

Just stone-cold killers, utterly devoid of passion and mercy? Space Sharks if they aren't listening, Carcharodons if they are.

White Scars (I think?) aren't particularly barbaric. They have strong cultural nomadic roots, but they're more noble warrior-type than mindless savage. I'd def. go with Flesh Tearers and co.

My money's on Minotaurs. I was going to put it and explain it, but someone beat me to it. I mean... even other space marines are kinda afraid/uncomfortable around them.

It is all tame when an Inquisitor can kill billions with an Exterminatus simply for being on the wrong planet, and not answer for it (usually.) There is a quote to paraphrase...You ask what right I have to kill a billion? I say I have no right to let them live.
