Ok, going to need the help of the veterans here.

Can anyone remember a series of 4-6 games that GW released (possibly very early 1990s) that were simplified versions of the main systems aimed at younger players. Think one of them was a Bloodbowl type game and I'm not sure that one of them wasn't Space Fleet (which went onto be popular in it's own right).

I played: Necromunda, Gorka Morka, Warhammer Quest, Epic, and a few times Man O War. I still have my Necromunda gangs, my Gorka Morka stuff (which is now part of my 40K Ork Army), and my Epic armies.

Hah, think I'm going to end up answering my own question. The Blood Bowl one was...

Space Fleet was definitely another. What were the Fantasy/40K ones though...

EDIT @ Crom - No, these were 4 games released in the same month aimed at getting kids to try out wargaming.

There was one called Mighty Warriors, which was an introductory Heroquest. There was also a game called Tyranid Attack which came with some old school warriors and genestealers I think..and maybe some Terminators.I also own a copy of a game called "Doom of the Eldar", but it used tokens and whatnot instead of miniatures.

Also a game called Ultra Marines...which was a scaled down Space Hulk

Wikipedia knows the answer to your question.

In 1991, Games Workshop released Kerrunch, a light version of Blood Bowl, developed by Andy Jones. It was released along with Mighty Warriors, Ultra Marine and Space Fleet, and was predominantly aimed at the younger gamer as an introduction to the Games Workshop hobby. The rules are a simplified version of those from Blood Bowl's second edition. The game came with 24 plastic miniatures, and is considered a collector's item.

Thanks for the Kerrunch keyword!!!!

Ah, MightyGodzilla wins the prize* I think. I remember Space Fleet well of course (nifty little game that one), but does anyone know what the other three were like?

*No actual prize, except for my respect and admiration

The only one of the four I actually play was SpaceFleet. I remember driving down 200 miles with some buddies to SantaMonica for a summer event at a GW store. My friends and I ended up playing in a twelve way demo game that I won - getting me a prize of the Space Fleet game. My friends and I all proceeded to stock up on the ships before we drove home and played that game quite a bit. I also remember making a custom mat out of 12"x12" plates of mirror divided up with pinstriping tape. Good times. Thanks for the memory!

Couldn't tell you, I was only 11 in 91 and most of the gamers at the local shop were into every war game but GW. Mostly the younger folks played the GW games. I have played nearly every system or if I haven't something similar. I think my first into to war gaming was Hero Quest.

We found my roommate a copy of that at an auction a while back. He still tries to get me to play that with him from time to time.

Space Fleet and Kerrunch were the games. Unlike Kerrunch having Blood Bowl, I don't think there was a complicated version of Space Fleet until much later with BFG.

I also had "Ultramarines" which was Space-Hulk lite. In this you had a load of tiles like Space Hulk but they were printed on thinner card. You could play with up to 4 players each with a team of 5 marine scouts (not terminators).

Although the game was called 'Ultramarines', the teams were coloured red, green and blue for different chapters.

Furthermroe, the game was rather un-fluff consistent in that the teams of marine scouts had to fight each other to explore the Hulk and collect alien artefacts. Player escaping with the most Artefacts won.

Kerrunch, Ultramarines, and others I assume, had a strange system to roll for hits or shooting. The inside of the box lid was divided into nine squares labelled hit or miss. You threw your dice 'to hit' into the box and only counted the ones landing in the 'hit' squares. It was a pain because the box lids always buckled and you dice were directed towards the corners where the 'miss' squares were.

Finally, I recall them being £5. Which was great value for the heap of plastics you got.

Talisman is great fun as well. I played the 1st and 2nd editions as a kid in our early-years local convention circuit. Great fun playing the samurai and chainsaw guy with the various expansions.

As a teenager, I picked up the 3rd edition and the expansions for it and inroduced it to my son when he was about 6 or 7. We played that game many, many times until we (the parents) were well sick of it. He still plays it from time to time with his friends and I'll likely pass it on to him when he's got kids of his own.

FFG's version is pretty true to the 1st and 3rd editions, being somewhat pared down while retaining the spirit of the game. I haven't played with the expansions for it, but have heard great things about them.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Nope. We got them down in Oz.
Spacefleet had some nice eldar proto-designs (Jes Goodwin).
The game itself was lame as.

Even for a children's game (my nephew who was 12 said this).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

They sold these in Toys R Us, once upon a time...

HeroQuest and Space Crusade was what did it for me.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

I played all of these, being as obsessive then as i am now

Tyranid attack was a bunch of SW scouts (back when they still had them) infiltrating a hive ship to destroy its synapse nodes, kind of like a gooier version of space hulk.

It had the 'last chicken in the shop, with rabies and buck teeth' tyranids in it Good times.

I was also a huge fan of Dark Future and the original Confrontation (published rules were in WD) which was the precursor to Necromunda.

WHAAT! I played this as a kid and had no idea it was a scaled down version of WHFB until now. I never really bothered to look at who produced the game before. All I remember about it now is that it came with a small plastic tower, which I stole from the box and used for other miniature games

Friend of mine had that. Man... we must've used that plastic tower in every game of 40K we played around that time.

And this is why GW never did TV commercials again

I remember that ad being on TV.

But to be fair, it would have been Milton Bradley that commissioned that ad. They were the publisher after all.
