Posted by Harry on Warseer:
I heard this back at the start of the summer but found out it was true at Games Day.

For those of you who don't know ... Aragorn Marks is quite handy with a bit of putty and once worked for a little known company called Rackham.

In fact he worked there for a number of years and was one of their lead sculptors.

The dream team just gets better and better.

Looking forward to seeing what he produces in the Games Workshop style.

Just hope they put him on fantasy rather than wasting his talents on that 40K nonsense.

Here are some of his efforts before being brought in from the wilderness.
(...)
They have taken on a bunch of new guys.
Lots of established talent from a number of different backgrounds.
Exciting times ahead.
(...)
They dragged Adam Troke back down into the mire with them again.
Just in time to have another swing at High Elves.
(...)
Joking aside I have no doubt that some of these extra guys will have been taken on to give them the capacity to do the Hobbit stuff whilst ramping up the releases for the established core.
I imagine they will be keen to avoid a repeat of last time.

Examples of his work:

This can only mean good things for GW.

Wonder what projects they have him on?

I second that! Plus his first name is Aragorn, how awesome is that?

I'd love a full line resculpt (and total retcon) of the sisters from this guy. His work with proportion and angelic motifs is great.

I dont know, call me pessimist or hater, but now his great work will be reproduced in finecast. He will be sculpting for a company who expect to sell to kids only. And all his works will come to us at double the price, with half the quality.

He will have a better job thought, and a better salary. I wish him luck, but i dont think those are good news for the comunity at all...

Did you ever buy any of the metal Rackham model?

Because much that stuff was exceedingly expensive per model, at least in the states. I know someone's going to come back with "But look at the quality of sculpt you get for it!", but some of it was ludicrous, even for such beautiful models.

Same here - I worry that GW will impose some restrictions on his sculpting style, going more for the 'House' look as opposed to what he can really deliver!

I would much rather have consistency than slightly better in a way different style. His stuff looks good and I am happy to have a Rackham sculptor with GW.

I really hope they let his skills shine.

The truth is though, GW figures look the way they do NOT because they can't do better, but rather because it's their STYLE.

To allow Aragorn (I never thought I'd ever type that name in this context) to sculpt to his ability would ask GW to change the look of key products established long ago.

I am confident that he would do wonders for Fantasy, 40K is a much more closed book where style is concerned at least for the main Factions such as the SM's. Which in my opinion could use a complete 'do-over'.

Perhaps he could help the other 'lesser' factions though.

How? Or are you following some rule that there has to be a jab at Finecast in every thread? All the Finecast models I've bought and examined in the last couple of months have been pretty much perfect. And it seems to me that the Finecast resin will be perfect for a talented sculptor like this. His challenge will probably be adapting to doing models in plastic. Maybe we'll see some new direction with things like Chaos, which badly needs to break out of its current straitjacket. If they let him loose, we could see some genuinely evil looking models.

I dont think so. I would not go so far and say that is the only reason, but that is one reason, probably carefully calculated.

I would like to see Daemons of Chaos re-done by him, i dont liked the example female model, but the big scary monsters? He do them very well...

I don't really care which company he works for. A good sculptor is a good sculptor either way, though one can hope that GW utilize his talents.

If GW hires him to do the old bad proportion "heroic" minis, then too bad for all of us.

To be fair dude, it's not liike working for GW has stopped Sculptors from doing side work in the past.

So yeah, perhaps a touch cynical. But no more than usual

He posted this news on his blog iirc at the start of May.
Disappointed but then again of the top 3 at Rackham he was my least favourite. Don't think his style is in tune with the Gw model though so it will be interesting to see how it pans out.

Feeling it as well. Hope the remaing two have enough sense not to follow his lead and continue to release top quality sculpts for a variety of companies. Would be interested to know if they have been approached though.

Has it really got to the stage now that we are that much of GW haters that we constantly think the worst. I am with you guys being so negative on GW but lets for once look at the positive that GW have hired what is clearly as kick ass sculptor, then lets praise GW for doing that!! As much as I like a GW rant is that such a big thing to ask.

Hired him so nobody else could have him is also ridiculous, we are in a global financial crisis. Nobody, GW included has the money to pay someone just so nobody else can have them. H.B.M.C your a legend and I appreciate your strong opinions but that one is a bit ridiculous.
