I've started working on a bunker terrain piece.
I still have to glue some sand on the rubble piles and such. But I'm not sure if I should put more stuff, like sandbags or something, on it.
What do you think?

Awesome, definitely nice.

If you should add anything, I'd think either more embellishment on the sides (I.E. pipes and whatnot) and/or firing ports (which might be hard)

Looking good, just make sure you don't accidently start spraying it or it will literally disintegrate before your eyes!

looks cool, it's simple, but it works. A nice paintjob would really pull it all together. Though I also agree with Cryonicleech, maybe it could do with a little more detail on the sides, think reinforced plating, pipes, rims, etc.
But it could work either way I think

Looking good. If it's going to be a bunker, it could use some more viewing/firing slits, but other than that it doesn't need much.

I highly recommend painting a layer of thin wood filler or plaster (I like latex based spackle) over all exposed styorofoam areas. Unlike the exrtruded (pink or blue type) foam which can usually take paint directly, beaded styro like you are using will usually show through the paint and mar the effect.

I also recommend basing it on a piece of hardboard. It's very cheap and will make it much sturdier.

Agreed, Do not spray paint it unless you want it to look like a toxic waste dump LoL.

Looks pretty sweet! I like the spiral note-book binding for razor wire on the side there. And I agree, chipping out some craters on the side would add some easy depth to the whole thing.

Thanks for the input, guys!
I have added some bullet holes and an Aquila to the sides. The firing slits idea is nice, will have to see what I can do.
About the spraying: So I've been told. Would a layer of acrylic hobby paint be enough security if I wanted to spray all the gubbins on it or should I hand prime the whole thing?

I don't have an answer to your question, but you could always Airbrush it if you have one. Anyway, I love the terrain piece dude. I am in the process of doing something very similar, I might steal a few of your ideas hah, ...I hope to have pics soon. I'm actually on a major terrain roll atm, check out my blog if you are interested: http://atticwars40k.blogspot.com/

I have used textured house paint on that sort of styrofoam before. It had a gritty texture and dried with a very hard concrete like finish. I think texture is important because you dont want it to look like a styrofoam bunker. Covering it with hobby paint would be fine if you intend to spray it later. It just needs a thin barrier to prevent the spray medium from reacting with the styrofoam.

If I'm not mistaken, it's the propellant in spraypaints that melts styrofoam. I imagine lacquer-based paints might give the foam trouble, but anything latex- or acrylic-based is safe to use and will provide a sufficient barrier to allow spraypaint to be applied over the top. Personally, I'd recommend spackle, concrete patch, or textured paint, as styrofoam's rather distinctive beaded texture always kills the suspension of disbelief if left alone, no matter how nicely painted a decorated, otherwise.

On the topic of foam, is that beige rubble on top of the structure open cell foam (the light, fluffy, squishy kind found in seat cushions)? It certainly looks like it. If so, I'd scrap it or replace it - it's not going to take paint well (the squishyness makes it hard to paint and causes what you can get on there to chip and flake during use, plus the open structure means you'll see beige through your painted colors unless you soak the entire thing in very fluid paint).

Expanded polystyrene can be sprayed if you use expanded polystyrene safe spray primer first. A few companies make it. Test it on a waste piece of plastic.

If you can't find a safe spray primer, paint the bunker with PVA glue thinned with water. You may need two coats to get full coverage. This acts as a primer and protects the plastic and it can then be sprayed, or else painted with normal acrylic paint.

For future reference, I advise you to paint the bunker before you stick the gubbinz on top. This will let you weather the bunker and paint the gubbinz separately and just glue them together at the end.

I use textured spray paint on a lot of my buildings. It gives the concrete a real concretey feel IMO and you want the doors and other gubbinz to have a metal kind of feel to them.
