I've recently gotten back into Necrons (awaiting the impending new releases) but found my old metallic paint jobs to be somewhat lacklustre and dull to paint repeatedly. Having more experience with a slightly more... colour based palette I experimented between a few colour schemes before finding one that I felt suited.
My question would be, given how in all fluff Necrons are seen as metallic is this paint job a step too far, and if so can it be redeemed in some way?
All other comments welcome.

I have been debating the same thing. I will probably be starting a Necron army too, but I don't think I want to go with the standard all-metalic paint scheme. I was thinking about doing something similar to yours, but drybrushing boltgun metal on after I paint it. I'm hoping it will make it look like it's metal underneath and was painted some other color. You know, like the paint is chipping at the edges or something.

I was going to suggest something similar. Find (or make) a metallic red. You get color, and you get fluff! Though I'm very partial to the chipping paint idea too....

Looks good! Well we dont know what the living metal would look like, the Necrons are so high tech that the material they used for their bodies may very well hold different characteristics to what we normally associate with metal. It may look more like a ceramic plate, I think its up to the player to choose what the said necron army should look like. They had the technology to give the C'tans material bodies, im sure they also would have had the technology to change the surface/color of a certain material if they wanted to.

Bolt Gun metal dry brushing idea sounds good. I've never made up a paint myself before so I may end up a little stumped when it comes to mixing a metallic red (if its as simple as putting red and silver together then I'm an idiot).
I'd also considered edging in a gold/mithril depending on which body part and going more of a ruby redish and gold on the cryptek/lord models as and when I finish with my mass of warriors.

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

A pretty awesome looking bone color here....if I was ever to do necrons, this is what I would do...super simple, yet effective.

I like it. Not to grim or flashy
The old (current?) Necron codex has a couple of excellent ceramic type schemes, so you're not on your own out thre with a non metallic scheme.

Thanks for the help guys, I think I need to try and practice flat bone colour a little more (and perhaps invest in a brush other than a beat up undercoating one and splayed detail brush) to get the details a little smoother and remove the texture.
Been looking for ways to make metallic red with citadel paints but the only way I've found seems to be metal with numerous red washes that'd require a complete redo. Will keep trying at this one though.
Now just gotta keep my focus long enough to clear 30 warriors before the new models are out.

Metallic red might be hard, but you could do a candy red very easy, take a look at this chopper I have been working for a while now;
That was acheived by paitning the tank and frame in mithiril silver, then airbrushing several layers of tamyia clear red, you could acheive a more red look by first basing with gold then alternating pray between tamyia clear red and clear orange.

Found this earlier, and it might be possible to come up with something red, rather than blue: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/382846.page

Mine go for a desert look (crawl up from under the ground) There is no reason at all to do all metallic.
More pics (although not very good pics (old camera)) can be found by clicking on my sig.
