Im looking to make a renegade guard army but honestly cant be bothered to buy conversion kits for every squad I buy and I dont really want to buy individual ogryns any modelling help. Painting spare parts and green stuff would really help.

Warhammer ogres make the best ogryn stand-ins I'm told with little converting to be done.

And if you want to make renegade guard without buying the kits it sounds like you're just gunna have to put in the hard yards.

You can make some basic renegade Cadians the following way using nothing but clippers, files and one of those notice board pins.

- Cut off the imperial aquila on the helmet, body armour and canteen.
- With the clippers, 'cut' into parts of the armour to show damage (and lack of maintenance)
- Scratch at the armour with the clippers too (don't go overboard though
- With the notice board pin, stab it into parts of the armour and twist it round and round to create bullet holes (again, don't go overboard
- With the notice board pin, scratch out Chaos symbols on the shoulder pads
- Use the files to neaten up and scratched off aquilas

Doing that, and combining it with a Chaos-y scheme (bloody, dirty fatigues and battle damaged armour that hasn't been cared for, bloody red colours if your Guard follow Khorne etc) will produce basic but effective renegade Guard that will (once painted) look the part.

If you aren't into conversion sets, then the only other thing you can do apart from the above steps is model parts with green stuff as you said. Modelling rags, bandanas, masks etc. will help your Guard look intimidating and rag-tag - perfect for renegades. If you are skilled with GS then you can even carve out Chaos logos to put on their shoulder pads.

Hope some of that helped!

Over the hills and far away.

Oppl has pretty much nailed this. What you could do is buy a few conversion sets, spread them through out your army and then just scratch/paint battle damge, chaotic symbols, etc on the rest. It would take a bit of work but it would look pretty awesome and would be well worth it in the end.

If your after chaos orgryns then Ogre bulls with some minor green stuffing will be your best bet.

I understand the desire to avoid conversion kits, but how about just headswaps? They're relatively cheap and easy. Pig Iron makes some.

Even kitbashing between catachans & cadians can help provide the look that they have limited supply lines & are unable to replace pieces of armor/fatigues as they wear out. Depending on what kinda price point you're looking for, one of each of the IG battleforces would give you enough bitz to amass a good start on infantry & command models & there are lots of plans floating around the internet for making tanks from scratch that look less like the standard Imperial patterns.

If you take the models & kitbash them heavily & follow OPPL's advice then you should be good for building renegade guardsmen.

Renegade guard don't always have to be gas-masky guys. You could get some heads from Marauders of Chaos or something and use their heads. They'd still be chaosy that way. Chaosy... is that a word? I dunno. Just an idea. It'd be fairly cheap which seems to be what you're looking for. Just an idea.

I like the idea of Marauder heads... they would look wicked boss rad with Cattychans.

Mix Catachan, Cadian, and Chaos Marauder bits. You can even make rough riders and get some extra bits for converting with the Marauder Horsemen kits. You'd be able to pad out your squads pretty well that way.

Let me ask you this: what's the fluff behind your renegade guard? It'll help you flesh them out. One thing you can do is buy Warhammer Fantasy core units, then spread out the bits, legs and all. Of course, your purchase would depend on what will fit your theme the most.

Bretonnian Peasant Bowmen and Men at Arms mixed with Cadian and/or Catachan bits can represent the 'guard with irregular (and mostly out of date) armor, plus ugly peasant faces.
Spoiler:

Empire Company can aim for the more Pirate-y look, perfect for renegade Imperial guAAAARd.
Spoiler:

Empire flagellant warband for the more chaos-y theme.

And finally, Vampire Counts troop selection can make a good undead (or half-undead) themed army:

Violence is not the answer, but it's always a good guess.

what ive done so far is replace basic bayonets with raggedy looking blades, random slight mutations fire sconces on my flamers and a suicide bomber. I plan to use greenstuff for a little buboes and random horns (tiny.) Also spread barbed wire and random dead parts. I dont have a backstory as such so far they just assist my chaos. If I can make this army large enough i plan to include the lost and damned formation so alot of mutants. Perhaps a group of militant cults.
