I've been playing Warhammer 40k for a few weeks now and generally having fun with it. But there have been a few players who berated for daring to use Space Marines. I usually brush it off as them being mad that I beat them or their buddy but it's starting to get to me. I chose to use Space Marines because the seem to do decent damage and were the most aesthetically pleasing to me. I don't know. Maybe you guys and girls can help me.

People should be encouraged to play whatever army they like. It's true that there are alot of marine armies out there but so what? It's a game and the goal is to have fun. Do whatever you enjoy, and don't let them get to you. Welcome to Dakka!

Yea just ignore people like that. Vanilla Space Marines are far from Over powered, infact Id only agree that 2 MAYBE 3 armies are over powered. But really, its the poor sport player that complains about losses. I win, and I lose like everyone else, as long as I enjoyed myself, I dont really let either get to me, and you shouldnt either. Just play your army, and enjoy it.

Just for sake of conversation though, whats your typical list look like?

Ignore those idiots - they're who make every game store, the entire hobby and gaming in general look bad. Play what you have fun with and what works with playing with your friends. If you like SM, play them. If you don't, play something else. The same should be said of any army.

The_Stormrider is right - they should be encouraging you, not being jerks (I'd use stronger terms but don't want to rub up against the terms of use) and discouraging you by giving you crap about your choice of army.

A lot of people choose Space Marines because they have broad appeal. They're also easiest to start due to the starter set, and have a forgiving playstyle. This is where a lot of the "newbie" stigma comes from. For reference, I've been playing for about 6 years, and Space Marines were my first army and I still play them now! Don't let those guys get you down; they're a great army for players of any skill level.

With all that, welcome to both the hobby and Dakka!

That's all that matters. Follow your own interests. And if you happen to stomp a hole in someones elses army while doing so, all the better.

Welcome to Dakka!

YES! YOU ARE A BAD PERSON! YOU SHOULD NEVER BUY WHAT YOU WANT!

Play what you want. If you think you have it bad, I paint all my BA brown. When I started, I was the "poop marine" player. Don't let it bother you. It's your toy soldiers, do what you want. They will get over it.

Yeah anybody who says you use a terrible army list obviously has serious problems with the game and is someone you really should just ignore. they covered in too much hobbystalgia (fun word ) to see any army except their 'glorious' list as good.

Welcome to Dakka.

Play what you want and like others have said although most people do pick the poster boys just do what you want to make them uniqe and yours.

All people should be encoraged to play what they want. When I started the Tau Empire for my first army I was very happy but I started seeing on forums saying Tau suck and some just insulting people for their choice in armys. So don't let it get to you. Waraming is fun and all armies are uniqe to their player.

2 things you should consider..

1. You state you have been playing for just a few weeks, and seem to be beating 'seasoned' players. Kudos to you Sir.

2. Marines are touted as the 'backbone' of entry players - to suggest otherwise would be an incorrect premise.

Welcome to Dakka, and I look forward to seeing some Batreps at some stage.

And remember..

There is not really anything wrong with vanilla marines its just that every man and his dogs plays marines and I suppose most players get sick of fighting the same old army again and again. Edited because making blanket statements insulting 30% or more of all 40k players is, you guessed it, rude. If this was a joke, it was not obvious...

Weirdly hostile/rude post there Jubear.

Chances are, I wouldn't want to play someone like you either.

I'd go back to that guy and slap in his in face. Space Marines are my first and only army (except for a few Vostroyans, those models rock). I play Ultramurfs, mainly because when I first started 40k (with the 5 SM hobby set with the paint) that's how the pamphlet told me to paint them. I've had more fun with my SM mostly because they appeal to me and because of that my armies have developed a personality, like the Devvies that always miss the tanks in the opponents army. I couldn't give 2 flips about winning. If I did I'd move onto FOTM armies. Just let the haters hate, fun is more important in this game than winning. If you want a perfectly balanced game that is based purely on skill, play chess. Or sit in a puddle eating snot.
