Actually in much CSA propaganda they showed the plights of the northern black man versus the southern slave. Basically they showed the black man in the north freezing outside because he couldn't get a job compared to the southern slave who had shelter.

Comparatively a southern slave may have had a better life than a freed black man in the north. Note I said may.

I love this. Protesters protesting other protesters, largely by claiming that their protest is a waste of time.

Its hard to sell a message of "You should be thankful!" when you aren't acting in a way which is consistent with being thankful.

You know, while all of these "personal stories" of hard work and determination are ...inspiring , not a single one of them in any way negate the ridiculousness of the gap in wealth between the top 1% and the rest of the population.
I'm all for hard work and carrying your own weight, but if one honestly believes that the 1% managed to reach a position in which they receive and control the majority of the wealth in the country based on merit, hard work and a solid work ethic...then perhaps the "53%" deserve the fleecing which we've been getting.

Interesting enough, many of the people who are part of the 99% do work hard.

The idea they are just a bunch of lazy hippies is just an easy way to dismiss any legitimacy they may have.

Are they still protesting? Have not hear much in the past few days.

having read a bunch of these, I am not sure the people get the 53% thing... I mean when you work real hard on a farm you don't pay taxes and in fact you soak up money from all of the damn corn subsidies.

No matter what system you live in; Capitalism, Communism, Democracy, Republic, Oligarchy, Monarchy, whatever, there will always be those who exploit the flaws in the system (and everyone knows there is no flawless system) for their own gain, you see it here in the US, you see it in every country on earth, that's humanity for you...

I have nothing against the rich being rich. Hell, I hope they get richer by putting more money into innovation. Life has progressed because of it.

I just have issues of the mega rich being able to buy and manipulate politicians. Don't think because I can't give a politician millions, I should not be given a better deal than someone else, more than likely the poor guy who needs the better deal.

There is a lot I disagree with the 99%. There are some issues I agree with and hope something is fixed. I'm not nearly as old as you, I'm only 24, but I have earned my BA and working on my masters in Special education, worked 30 to 40 hours a week doing odd back breaking work. I do not owe a dime in college tuition. But I am still broke because of my outrageous costs in health insurance, which is impossible for me to live without. I am insurance broke, this is not OK no matter how many people on FOX news says it is. it is a problem millions are hurting from, and it is getting worse.

I volunteer a lot in my community, coaching youth football, organizing blood drives and donating my own blood, organizing toy drives during Xmas and AIDS awareness at a local museum in my town.

I'm far from lazy. and I am no hippy. But the 99% do have some right ideas. I don't Daddy War Bucks to buy me my house and a TV.

I just don't want to get kicked in the balls and have them tell me it's fair.

What amazes me is that, in spite of OWS rising up to do their thing in the name of 99% of the populace, just how many people under the umbrella for which they are protesting for hates them for it. I mean, maybe it's cause I don't remember the hippie protest thing in the 70s, but I've never seen such a reaction toward people trying to upset the status quo in the favor of helping you.

I (still) have yet to see evidence of that. The really curious thing to me is that very few of the 'anti-protestors' are making that claim. They're not trying to say "you're wrong and here's why". Their message is "we like serfdom, and you're lazy for not liking it".

Well, they are moral paragons.

That being said, much of what OWS seems to want would be awful for the economy. If they could limit their message to "Reform banking regulation!" they would be better off.

There's a lot of things that could be done to help that OWS isn't covering also. Fixing copyright/patent law for starters...

That's really the thing though. They're not economists. But, just as you don't need to be an electrician to know there's an electrical problem when your toaster electrocutes you every time you use it, you don't have to be an economist to see there are problems.

Unfortunately, you might just need to be an electrician to know how to fix it properly.

Well, they are advocating banking reform, which is fine and likely to carry with many people. Its all the other things they're advocating, and the way they're advocating them, which are the problem.

Granted I see things somewhat black and white, that's the soldier in me, but I dont stick my foot in my mouth hugely and say anything along the lines that you retort to me with. I wouldn't argue with taking benefits off 25 year doley's, and I wouldn't argue with taking assets off ridiculously wealthy idiots who dig out blind to commit tax evasion or defraud people or rob hard working people. Im pretty much always in the middle ground.

I work next to the protests here in CA and while making a delivery, there were some vets for peace who asked me if I was going to join the protest and I proudly told them I was working but they had my full support. They held up their fist in solidarity and I held mine up in return. I think they were from the war in Korea. Get involved.
