Whats up guys?

Guess I'm making a call out to all the Titan owners, so here goes:

Titans, as well all know, are just about as expensive as a deposit on a car these days - so how do people justify the investment? I guess its clear that it epitomises ones love of the hobby or of a collection - but I just wanted to pose a few questions to those titan owners out there.

1) What Titan do you own? Did you purchase it at full retail, or did you get a sweet deal through a friend? Or is it even a recast (I've heard about many of these) or a scratch build?
2) Why did you want to add a Titan to your collection? Just because its cool, or for other reasons?
3) I have personally never seen anyone use a Titan in a game in my area, despite knowing there are a few about. How often does your Titan see the tabletop for gaming purposes? Or does it sit on your display board / shelf looking pretty?

Thanks guys! I look forward to your responses!

Don't buy a Titan with the intention of using it in a game. Unless you play a lot of apocalypse, chances are, you'll use it maybe once a year, if that.

They're modelling projects. If you want to put the effort into making one, and are content with the fact that the most you'll get out of it is the satisfaction that you made it, dive in.

Personally, I own a Heirophant biotitan. I got it last Christmas. I've worked on it on and off, but I haven't even built it yet. i've worked on some of the miscast issues, gone through getting replacements from Forgeworld, and it's at the point where I can start pinning it together. I really should get around to it.

With the release of Necrons, Titans are relegated to the back lines of an Apoc army to hide from Scarabs and will not get to shoot for the first half of the game due to forced night-fight. 10 tiny Necron scarabs will destroy any Titan in 1 turn - every time. Expensive models destroyed by 150 points of bugs...

Needs to be a ruling on that, like scarabs don't work on super heavies (too much metal) because otherwise they are plain broken.

I've found that Titans can be pretty devestating. If you're fighting against one, you can't really ignore the firepower they lay down, so you have to go for it. If you field one, know that they will go after it hard. Make sure you guard it's feet; easiest way to take down a titan is getting inside the 12" void shields and melta-ing/hammering it at close range.

Scratchbuilding a titan can be tricky, but it's worth the work when the whole thing costs around 10 buck in materials.

Titans will only be able to fire an average of 21" during Nightfight (Necron induced) - so much for pie-plates of doom. Scarabs assault range is 19"-24". 50 attacks automatically hit stationary targets = -25 armour = wrecked Titan/Baneblade/etc. every turn. A Titan won't fire any weapons at the enemy for 2+ turns (continued night-fight) and the only way to save it is to bubble-wrap it with troops at the back of the table = no shooting all of those fancy weapons.

In our last Apoc game 20 old codex Scarabs with a 2 point upgrade stripped most of the weapons from 2 Titans in 1 round. New codex Scarabs will reduce them to scrap with less effort.

And then it comes back on from reinforcements. Or they deploy it behind your lines with strategic reserves. There's plenty you can do to 'out TFG' people in Apocalypse with titans.

Eh, I can't justify titans.

I found someone who is willing to scratch build me a thunderhawk for $300, which is probably about what you'd have to pay to commission a titan to be built. I can justify that, because its a centerpiece for my marine army, and $300 isn't THAT much. When you start getting over $600 though... thats insanity level.

They're powerhouses, but unless you play Apocalypse constantly, it's pretty much just a fun project. I did see one game where a single Titan wiped out an entire Tau army turn 1. They're nasty, nasty things to bring to the table.

1. Eldar Reaver, 2 Gargants. Both retail.
2. I always liked the epic feel of 40k and when Apoc was released I loved it. My current project is to have a super heavy for each faction I own (Nids, Orks, IG - have a Baneblade, SWs, Eldar). Then I'll plonk them all down and have a royal rumble. Their aesthetics are also top notch and make a great center piece. The Gargants were a pleasure to assemble and paint, great kits, the Reaver not so much, he got left with a friend to complete
3. I've played several games with the Gargants and they are great fun. You can do something different (like this http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/402679.page) and it certianly does add that "wow" factor to games.

I'd say if you are into the hobby/painting aspect, want a major project to work on and would like a greqat centerpiece get one.
The other side is if you know you will play Apoc regularly or want to mix your games up some, they also work great too.
However, they do cost. A lot.

1) What Titan do you own? Did you purchase it at full retail, or did you get a sweet deal through a friend? Or is it even a recast (I've heard about many of these) or a scratch build?

A) I have 3 independant model knight paladins, 3 old oop Armourcast Warhound titans, 3 oop Armourcast Reaver titans, 1 scratchbuilt Emperor class titan. Got them all bar the emperor through Ebay watching prices and swooping on buy it now ones under the at the time current price trend.

2) Why did you want to add a Titan to your collection? Just because its cool, or for other reasons?

A) I've basically got all I needed for my armies normally, so i decided the last options for me were titans, still seeking a old beetleback warlord titan from Armourcast but its not going to suceed unless I really luck out. can hope though. I did it because I'm a big fan of them, think their cool and also love the look and feel of them on the boards.

3) I have personally never seen anyone use a Titan in a game in my area, despite knowing there are a few about. How often does your Titan see the tabletop for gaming purposes? Or does it sit on your display board / shelf looking pretty?

A) I'm hoping to get mine on the tabl soon, but until now I've been admirnig them and prepping them as a really fun paint project. Will be nice to finish painting the demi legion.

Personally, I'm scratch-building 3 Gargantuan Creatures (one 250pt on about 6-7" tall, then a warhound equivalent size and a kind of bane-blade equivalent size tranporty thing) for my Dark Eldar, but I couldnt rightly justify the massive price tag for retail ones.

if you play appoc fairly regularly(2-3 times a year) then they will be a good investment.

But you really don't buy them for the effectivness on the table-top. you buy them so that if someone asks if you own a titan you can say yes. You also have the "I own a titan, your argument is invalid" line to use.

I own a Warhound titan. It is awsome. He currently lives in the display case at my FLGS along with my Stormlord.

I find they're only fun to play against if both sides have them. At my FLGS, their's only imperium titans, so if you're xenos, it's you versus the titan and it's no fun.

My stompa, while only $100, can hold its own nicely against the FW titans when properly supported. When you take into account that the cost of a single warhound could buy you 5 stompas, you can field silly amounts of them.

BTW, what is the gargant kit people are talking about? Is it the stompa or did GW actually make one years ago?

Stompas are broken as hell, quite funny too though so its all good.

As for Titans being good, they can be, but they can also die quite dramatically. One Chaos lord on a bike can do very nasty things to them. They do NOT like enemy infantry or walkers getting close.

They need to be supported so they don't get caught. Then they can level the enemy army.

I can barely say I play 40K, let alone Apocalypse. I'm in the process of scratchbuilding a Warhound for two main reasons: First, it's a pretty big undertaking, if you want the results to be actually impressive. This is a large project that I can really immerse myself in for long stretches, or I can dabble here and there between other projects - either way, the result is going to be impressive and it will be all my doing. This actually covers a good deal of the second reason - it's a freaking titan. It's going to look cool as hell sitting on my shelf (or in my display case, if I ever find one cheap enough, i.e. am within driving range of an Ikea...).

I like the idea of plunking down a big, death-dealing robot monstrosity in a game of Apocalypse and I'd like to think that I'll eventually participate in them regularly, but for now it's a modeling project, leading to a display piece, regardless of gaming potential.

i play apocalypse about once every 2-3 months. that said, i personally own 2 revenants, a phantom, stompa, and i may be aquiring a second havd reaver sometime soon. plus a bunch of forgeworld fliers. (nightwings)

my buddies have also started collecting titans... the group i play in features 2 hierophants, 2 reavers, 3 warhounds, plus a ton of baneblade hulls and stompas.

in game terms they simply OWN. if they are ignored, they can just mess things up, and honestly the revenant/warhound and larger can lay a beating down on the gw plastic kits (baneblade/stompa)

as mentioned its a modelling project that will take alot of time to do properly, but once finished is a VERY nice additon to your army. especially if you already own something like 8000 points of other stuff.

the key to fielding them is know how they work, and make sure they have escorts. a lone titan by itself will get stomped flat PDQ. but if you have a bunch of stuff helping it out, makes life much easier.
