So at a tournament last week a couple players and I got into a debate about what the best core in the game was. We talked point levels, equipment options and the like but no one was swayed to the point of changing their mind. So I want to know what dakka thinks is the best core in the game. Post em up and say why!

Is this in a vacuum, or when supported by the rest of the army?
If it's the latter, I'd probably go with Corsairs.

I had to choose 300pts of core allies to go with my DOC army for a tourney and I chose 50 Khorne Marauders with Great Weapons. I took best general. They won me game 1, but were pretty lame the last two games.

Bloodletters IMO but most will tell you warriors of chaos. They can do so much and are so versitile. You can go attacking with halberds and khorne and flaming banner or you can go two types of defence. festus and nurgle with ahw for 4+ armour and 5+ regen while being -1 to being hit as well as loads of poisioned attacks or you can go tzeentch with shields and get a 3+ armour and 5+ parry.

2500 points of Iron Hands!
5000 points of Skaven
2000 points of Daemons of Chaos
Adding to the Daemons and Iron Hands ATM! |

Everyone knows it's skaven slaves right?
To be honest, this is a bit like asking which is better... Rock, Paper or Scissors?
If pushed for a serious answer, I'd go for Seaguard of Lothern - good all rounders

Yes I mean in a point for point vacuum and its not so much rock paper scissors as what core you personally like.

Definitly Marauders with GW and MoK. Or Ogre bulls due to their sheer mass of attacks and wounds if you run them in adequat blocks

Marauders are just too easy to kill ad just don't do enough damage (poor WS, too many die on the way in and they then lose a load more before attacking, no re-rolls), it's why a lot of warriors armies have gone full cycle from mainly warriors, to lots of marauders, to mainly warriors again.
I'd probably go with Mark of Tzeentch Chaos Warriorsl. Pretty durable, pretty killable. Automatically Appended Next Post: Pretty killy!

Oh really? I find it to be the other way around. Marauders are great for tarpitting. And for killing of rank and file troops, besides they are dirt cheap so I dont relye on them soley but they do form a vital part of my army. Warriros are absolut monsters when given haleberds, MoK and the flaming banner + a attached lord/hero

If were just looking at math hammer, I think its khorne marauders with flails... someone did the math at some point when 8 was new. They dish the most damage per point.
Obviously when we remove the vaccuum, we get a lot of "right answers" and marauders will most likely be dropped down in the list. Cant see how someone can fit chaos warriors on any of the lists though

There are 2 main reasons I'd go for extra hand weapons instead of halberds- the first is that they become dramatically more survivable, with a 3+/5++ as opposed to a 4+ 6+ (assuming both Tz).
The second is that if you take a Shadow level 4, you've got a good chance of getting Mindrazor on them- at which point, having halberds becomes irrelevant.
So, taking the shields gives you a very survivable unit that can soak up an enemy charge, then in the next round go for the Mindrazor.
Of course, if you don't take Shadow, halberds will kill more... but tbh, the only other Lore that I'd ever really consider on Warriors would be Heavens, and tbh Shadow just suits them better. Automatically Appended Next Post: Sorry, that should read shields instead of halberds... I are writing good

I think Bloodletters.
The reason DoC is still a competitive army despite the massive magic nerf is in large part due to them IMHO. Their stats are outrageous, most other units have to give weapons/halberds to get their Str. Their WS is huge. Their I is huge. They have 5 Move. They get a fricken' ward Save and they got KB.
Core:Core fights using no other magic or buffs or anything, I think Bloodletters are going to beat just about every other Core in the game.
I ran the numbers on the calculator and generic WoC come out 31% in a 4 rank fight, but they cost 25% more. So they slightly beat Bloods. If you buy them a shield or halberd they do better.
At least that's what I saw.

Corsairs beat Bloodletters all the time, every time. Going first with more attacks and re-rolls outweighs the KG and higher S.

Additional Hand Weapon Gor, WS4 S3 (S4 when supported with beast banner) T4, with BSB rerolls and a Ld9-10 bubble it almost guarantees hatred. 345 for 40 with full command. But you can get 59 GW/MoK Mauraders for the same points!
Properly supported though with beast banner and Ld10 bubble the Gor will kill 20 Mauraders before their attacks, Marauders hit back and kill 13. Next round, Gor will kill 18, Marauders kill less due to losing prior round and therefore frenzy and kill 7. Next Round, Gor kill 12, mauraders strike back and kill 3 and warriors break unless they roll 1,1 and are dead next round.
So properly supported, point-for-point my vote goes to Gor for best core in the game. Straight up regardless of points it's going to be Chaos Warriors for their awesome stat-line and amazing versitility. Shields with MoT for a 3+AS 5+WardSave, MoK with Halbreds, Additional Hand Weapons and GWs and they can get access to a 50pt magic banner as a core troop choice that is amazing.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

I guess the armies regularly doing well have the best core Lets see: Ogres have bulls, Delfs dont have weak core, Daemons just dont have weak core, VC have their ghouls which are pretty tight and so forth

I get in this debate regularly. I contend that Gors are top three along with Chaos Warriors and Marauders. Most people get upset when I say that AHW Gors are better than Saurus, though.

After seeing my Gors bound Sarus into the dirt every game I play against them I agree. Sarus are only decent because of armor and cold blooded. They have little to no damage output.
My top three are Troll, Savage Orc and Marauder

Because cavaly no longer breaks formation, you need to use several formations of them, pluss they dont hold up in prolonged combat

I always take 1, and when I get more done up I'll be taking at least 1 more unit.
Out on a flank
Put 10 wide.
Mvt 6
Thrown weapons
Quick to fire
Muso is essential for fast reform
Shields and the parry save
Cold Blooded
Most enemy flankers are 5 or less models so after being pelted by 2-3 rounds of shooting including stand and shoot there will still be 5 models left in the 2nd rank to get steadfast.
Then when they invariably break through the enemy suddenly has a unit or >10 models with all the above abilities rolling down the flank/going after rear units/warmachines.

My Chaos Warriors just laugh at their face. 3 attacks base with S5 means getting 24 attacks straight into your face, striking first, reducing their sv to a 4+, same as my Warriors. 24 attacks means 16 hits, wounding on 2+ thus 13 potential losses, sv reducing them to 7 lost horses which basically means that in the very first round of combat, you lose almost your entire lance. Pathetic.
