Is it common to come up with tailored lists for "x" amount of point games vs the various armies? Or better to just come up with one general list for all? Is a tailored list common practice among gamers or is it frowned upon?

Take All Comers is a better way to play - you will learn a lot more about your army that way.

Nothing wrong if you both tailor to each other and see what happens i guess.

My lists are generally terrible anyway (Jezzails, hoooooo! ) so it doesn't really matter. It's an all comers list though.

It probably depends on your local scene. If everyone plays gunlines, then no one can really fault you if you make an anti-gunline list, that sort of thing.

Which would then be an all-comers list, no?

All-comers-list unless in a campaign or a grudge-match.

I always roll all-comers.

Generaly speaking, an all-comers list will almost always beat a non-all-comers list. with the exception of the hard-counter-list.

I play all comers lists. I will randomly swap out various banners, but beyond that, out of the last 10 games with my Ogres, it has been the same list (9-1). The first 7 games I was still randomly swapping units around to try out new stuff.

With that said, we do have an in-group "challenge pyramid" where we play a bit more cutthroat and people have been known to tailor a list or two...

I suggest you don't believe anything posted by thedarkavenger unless confirmed by other regular posters here at Dakka. He has shown he is incapable of basic English comprehension.

My lists are always all-comers as well.

Another vote for general all-comers lists.

For pick-up games, though, an interesting approach is to make several lists in advance, and choose the most appropriate one after talking to your opponent. After all, the whole point is to have fun!

(Note 'appropriate' and not 'tailored')

I play warhammer most often to practice for tournaments. In that context, a tailored list would be silly.

As a tournament player I favor general lists. They might be tailored to face specific arch-types or army books according to the meta-game but not designed against specific players.

All-comers, definitely, but there are some advantages to "semi-tailoring" a list. I play in relatively small local tournaments that I know are a little lighter on magic than the average tournament list, so (since I play Dwarves), I don't spend quite as much on anti-magic as I would in a vacuum. But really, we're talking about a difference of 25-50 points max here.

In 8th up until June or so of this year, if I only had one lore I would go Life on my DOC Herald, but with ogres shifting the meta to more cannons and TK with their Casket of Souls, and finally me runninga Bloodthirster more often I've shifted to be more anti gunline per-se due to protection and immunity from the latter are both provided by lore of light.

I generally play at local tourneys and ones out of town, however I don't deviate from my standard lists much.

I would say that Tailoring really only applies if you are specifically targeting a specific army.

A Balanced list in my opinion is just a list that is "Tailored to the Meta"

if you Meta is magic light then you will probably build a list taking that into consideration. You could either go magic light yourself, or go magic heavy to take advantage of the advantage this would give you.

I wouldn't call this tailoring, its just making a balanced list.

I see it both ways. I want to face tailored list so I know my army has the tools it needs to get the various jobs done, and give me an idea when I should be playing for a draw instead of going for the throat.

Telling your opponent to not tailor his list is basically asking him to build a weaker list to fight you.

On the flip side, once I get comfortable with a list I want to get in some games against non-tailored lists as well. A lot of my opponents have the same mindset, and will ask for me not to pull any punches as they test out the dynamics of their new lists.

I have 3 styles I run for the tailored list; DE avoidance and shooting/magic, Vampire counts turn 1 charge and ethereal spam, and Ogres with minimal magic and maximum thump. In a 'normal' game, I'll run more balanced lists.
