After browsing the "make da call" forums, alot of necron questions have end with "wait for the FAQ" well, how do an FAQ work? do we have to post the questions and GW will answer? do they check forums and post the ones they deem worthy? and when/how is it released?

That is a question that only the emperor can answer!

The Dark Eldar codex was released I believe in November of 2010, and the first DE FAQ came out on 17 January, 2011.

Hope that helps.

There is no normal timeframe. It comes when it comes. That may be in 3 months... or 3 years.

As to how they gather the questions, that's anybody's guess. Since they no longer maintain their own forums, feedback directly from players is less easily obtained. At one stage they just cribbed all the good parts out of the INAT FAQ, and large chunks of the Space Wolf FAQ were taken verbatim from another fan-made FAQ... so presumably the method these days is to look at what is being discussed on the various forums and answer whatever they feel needs addressing from there.

The GK FAQ came out within a few months of the codex, sometimes customer service does respond to questions. I know that there were serveral replies to compiled GK question lists.

customer service? you can call GW 10 times and get 10 different responses. Calling GW is not a legitimate way to clarify rules. There is no GW policy that requires its employees to know the correct rulings or that makes their rulings credible.

Right, but FAQ, that stands for 'frequently asked questions' right? I mean if you want to influence the FAQ, how else do we get the questions to them?

When I spoke with some of the studio staff a year or so ago, they said that they looked through various rules forums to get an idea of what needed ruling on, and that they aimed to release them at around the 3 month mark.

If the thought of something makes me giggle for longer than 15 seconds, I am to assume that I am not allowed to do it.

You don't. Calling customer service won't get your questions to the studio either, though. They're completely separate.

Remember that period when there was one guy answering rules-question....and he compiled and passed those questions on to the studio?

Was his name John Spencer or something? Whatever happened to him?

I remember when there was one guy named John Spencer answering rules questions in the US. Whether or not he ever had the opportunity or the access to pass anything on to the studio is anyone's guess.

The fact that he answered in/from the US wasn't the biggest problem as he only answered mails. He came onto this board at some point and explained the procedure.
He talked to the games designers on a regular basis and compiled the answers so they were consistent.

This was a huge step up for GW and really promised greener pastures ahead.
Unfortunately John seems to have gotten waylaid during the big GW North America dust up that happened around that time. And so we are back to the same slow release schedule for FAQs.

Granted, it has gotten better, but it is still a far cry from what is to be expected from "The Greatest Model Making Company In The World" and proud owner of "The Hobby".

Don't expect all your HQ models. It's apparertly against GW policy to make all the models in the dex these days..

Orks lack Wazdakka and Zogwort still, and it's been years.
Dark Eldar are missing just about every HQ model that's a named character. The old Drahzar model is still around, and Lelith and Urien have new models, but the rest are sadly missing...
Nids are missing Tervigon, Swarmlord, Parasite of Mortrex, Doom of Malentai (elite i know, but the model should be awesome) etc etc..

With a couple of exceptions, that's been GW policy since pretty much forever.

Every now and then they announce that they are going to release every model for every codex from now on... and then they forget about it and go back to just cramming new stuff in regardless of whether they have models planned or not.

You'd almost think that this was a modeling hobby, and that you could build your own HQs out of the tons of bitz you have lying around.

If you'll excuse me, I have to put the finishing touches on Nemesor Zahndrekh.

At least until the official one finally does come out, and your carefully modelled/kitbashed model is invalidated

Not always

Say for example that you kitbash a Tervigon or a triarch walker (or whatever) and the new model turns out to be significantly larger and on a different base.

Are your opponents / TO's going to let you use the minime?

I've seen this happen with the Talos/Chronos when the new kit came out. Same with the Stormraven when the new kit hit, IIRC.

Same thing with kitbashed Deffdredds built to the old one's scale, and small compared to the new one.

Some will, some won't.

Character model conversions are usually fine, as they are going to be the same size, but MCs and vehicles less so.

I have several ork LR battlewagons, from back before the new kit, and it's hard to get people to accept them, as the front arc is significantly wider than the official model.

That's pretty much exactly what happened with the Defiler... Without any specific guidelines on just how big they should be, people made their own from all sorts of different stuff. Most people didn't much care about the size difference when the proper kit was released, as far as I saw.

I've had nothing but positive comments about mine...

Sounds like you have a more laid backm local scene than mine

Casual gamers are usually cool with the conversions/kitbashes as long as they aren't too far out from the official model, and rule of cool helps, of courrse.

Tournament play..forget it, most times, unless it's the same dimensions, or disadvantageous to you The TO's locally are pretty cool, especially if it looks good, but some of the players, not so much. Travelling to a tourney and being told that my BW's were unacceptable, after a 3 hour drive made me get some new 'official' ones, as that was a whole day, and entry fee, wasted.

Actually, so far the only place I've used the Battlewagon in public was a tournament.

As a rule of thumb for tournament play, though, if you're doing anything that's appreciably different from the standard model, it's a good idea to get it okayed by the TO before the event. My Battlewagon's debut event, I did just that with my Orks, because I had a bunch of models on non-standard bases, and a few conversions that weren't quite in line with the standard models. The end result was zero pain on the day.

And thank God that they do so. Would you like them to go back to making small boring slimline codexes with a serious deficit of units?

Complaining about the lack of models is strange to me. I would of course love to have models to represent every unit in the codex, but I would much rather have the units in the codex without models than the units left out of the codex all together.

That was nothing to do with the model range. It was a design choice for 3rd edition. They were smaller because they were missing all the fluff sections, not from a lack of different units.
