Chris Straw and George Dellapina have been busy working on a Dreadfleet set that I arranged the commission on.

The pics can do the talking.

Wow. That was a lot of photos to sort. I'll be picking up the next batch on Friday if all goes to plan. Maybe sooner...

That is a lot of lovely work there. The blending and the highlighting works really well. The ghost effect on the wrecked ships is a bit curious, but the execution is superb.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

That was a deliberate move by Chris and George to get higher contrast against the cloth. It really does work very well, especially in typical yellow / fluorescent light.

Awesome work these guys are doing and my first view of the new models. They look great especially the Dwarf one.
Looks like you are getting your money's worth!

The client's pretty pleased. The set should be complete and sent off this weekend if all goes to plan. There's a chance he'll get it for Christmas.

Man, this is awesome! I have been kicking around the idea of having my Dreadfleet set commissioned, as I do not have the time nor the desire to paint them myself (I got too much other stuff to paint lol). Wonder how much something like this would cost?

Repeat jobs of this set are to be quoted at around £2500-£2750.

The main battleships are fairly large - usually around 8-10cm base length. The flagships are larger, around 12cm long. The small cogs / auxiliaries are about 1cm diameter. The flying auxiliaries are on about a 25mm diameter base.

The rest of the set was dropped off last night. We're making an effort to try to get it to the client for Christmas (maybe!). Finished photos and packing at about 1am, unfortunately I won't be able to get more now. But here's the rest of the set:

Looks good. I'm not thrilled with the fire, but then again I've never seen fire painted well.

I agree. For fire to work it needs to be heavily OSL'd, This job exceeded its budget as is; and it's one of the things that needs more work, hence the higher repeat quote. Actually doing the OSL over water is extremely complex to pull off, as you need to highlight the water caustics properly.

Gosh wow those waves

These all look fantastic. Are you painting them in sub-assemblies? Can't imagine getting a brush in around those sails...

Did you know? The Reach belongs to the Forsworn.

Yes, they were painted as sub-assemblies. It's one of those sets where you have to choose whether you're going to paint it before you play it really; as once assembled things don't come apart easily.

you can snap assemble most of it. If you glue it than you can almost forget ever painting it correctly.

I found that a lot of the parts run a risk of being damaged by trying to take it apart even when snap-assembled. Better to just do it once.

you did quite an okay job, but the fire... seriously?
Seriously?

fire is brightest on the INSIDE. Paint it white, then yellow, then brush it red and redder and finally with a little black - voila, good fire.

This looks like a blob of red paint climbing about the ship

I don't want to be human! I want to see gamma rays! I want to hear X-rays! And I want to - I want to smell dark matter! Do you see the absurdity of what I am? I can't even express these things properly because I have to conceptualize complex ideas in this stupid limiting spoken language! But I know I want to reach out with something other than these prehensile paws! And feel the wind of a supernova flowing over me! And I can know much more! I can experience so much more. But I'm trapped in this absurd body!

Well that seemed an necessarily brutal piece of criticism. It's a good bit more than an 'okay job'.

I think the fire looks fine, it doesn't look like the greatest sculpt of a burning object to work with anyway. Why do some people think that because someone is a good painter, the criticism is allowed to be out right rude/aggressive?

Treesong / Orikl:
It's an amazing paintjob on everything apart from the flamething.
Yet the flame is done sloppy. Had he just applied the colours in reverse order it would've been good.

So it's only an "okay job."

It isn't bad, that's for sure

But as I grew up, the most talented people ALWAYS earned the harshest criticism - and I support this creed. Push the good to even better heights, do not let them relent

WHOA! I'd keep them in a glass case and handle them once a year with white gloves.

Not the kind of set you take down to the local hobby shop to be manhandled by unmannerly 13 year-old with Cheetos dust on his fingers.

@Brushfire: No, I wouldn't let *my* kids play with this set, and they're careful. I think George and Chris would be very upset if the local scrotes were let loose on it....

Great stuff winterdyne!

I'm painting the set as a commission myself and based on your pics, I think I'm underselling myself significantly. :(

I like what you did with the auxillaries, btw. I've been contemplating what I was going to do with them. Mind if I borrow your scheme?

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

How much did that cost as a commision must be £800+

The costing of the set has been discussed elsewhere. £800 is less than half of what I'd rush this out for to a 'good' tabletop level; there is a lot more in there than people first think.
We reckoned the time put in (on this shown set) was just shy of £2000, but that to do a nicer job would take just a bit more time; better OSL effects (yes, we knew about that fire!), some sharper work on the smaller counters and pieces. All in all, for a really nice job we reckon a bit north of £2.5k would be lovely.
