Hey, I quit 40K sometime ago for what I thought to be good. However its just too popular at my store not to play.

So here is the thing my last army was Eldar before that was Blood Angels, Orks, Tyranids, Dark Eldar, Chaos Space Marines, Tau, Imperial Guard, Kroot Mercs, and Necrons
I played all the current editions except my Necrons were the old ones, the base problem I have is changing armies to often (I have played all but a few of the Fantasy armies and finally settled on Bretonnia and TK)

Right now I am interested in any army I have not played (Besides Daemons) and I am interested in the new Necrons as that was my first army (I traded them because people complained they were cheezy and I wanted to get less crap, but I probably shouldve ignored them but I digress that I was a noob and it was hard to get into the game with complaints)

I want to build an Ice Themed army (Snow and Ice bases) I want to be competitive, any advise is appreciated and lastly I have 250$ to start for now so 1000-1500 points if possible would be good. Thanks

Well, I'd go for GK's. The models and the codex are really great. Its too early to say if Necrons are really competitive; my guess is 2nd tier.

Well, with your reasonably comprehensive list, I'd say it'll be a little tough to find a "new" army...

Okay, depends on how seriously you take the fluff. If you're going to go GK as suggested, and stick rigorously to their restrictions not only in the codex but in their theme, you're going to find yourself short of creative juices for a well-travelled man, it seems to me.

Your list (surprisingly?) doesn't include astartes Marines, which puzzles me. If you have a definite dislike for them, then I understand, but they are by far the easiest and most versatile army in terms of lists and also fluff-fitting theme. Kick-ass snow-covered chapter? Done

Competitiveness-wise, I can't say I'm an expert here. But I know for a fact that neither GK nor SM are bad. So yeah, I'd say definitely one of those two.

Plus, you can play a snow/ice version of Vulkan. Come on

I have considered a Vulkan list but when I decided on a snow based army it seemed off, but maybe led by Mr. Freeze.

I care about fluff but I do not know much on Grey Knights, but the meta game with them seems to be Purifiers, Paladins, and RifleDreads. I do like Purifiers the idea of them at least but not with crowe I would probably use Corteaz. Necrons I thought could be cool awaking on a ice world I do not know much but a Close Combat Necron list with the Storm Lord guy (since night fighting rule for him seems cool)

Someone suggested Space Wolves to me, but the standard infantry have silly beards and the Thunderwolves have no models.

I'd second GK as a new list against what you've got.

They are also extremely cost effective if you do it in the right way, considering you're setting yourself a target of $250 (I assume around £200) you're looking at one of the only armies that can cater for that.

1500pt Grey Knights [unpainted] 4-0-0
1500pt Eldar [unpainted] 3-1-0 [retired]
1500pt Necron [painted] 33-0-0 [retired]

Just out of Curiosity how would you suggest to start a Grey Knight army? lets say first 100 what would that be spent in and then up to 250$

I'm in the UK so I don't really know your pricing over there.

But the basics would be a Librarian and two Psyflemen dreads, everything else is how you want to go.

You'll need a delivery system for whoever goes with the Libby, if you trust deep striking you can just go with terminators, but if you want a squad (incinerators or strike squad) then a Land Raider or Stormraven is necessary.

It comes down to how you'd rather play. My list is pretty basic and cost me very little but has been extremely effective (Librarian, 2 Strike Squads w/Razorbacks, Terminator Squad, Stormraven, 2 psyflemen dreads and vindicare at 1500pts) all I already had was the 2 psyfleman and spent in the region of £150.

1500pt Grey Knights [unpainted] 4-0-0
1500pt Eldar [unpainted] 3-1-0 [retired]
1500pt Necron [painted] 33-0-0 [retired]

Mr. Freeze Vulkan + freeze-rays (meltas) and snow-blowers (flamers)?

That sounds like a fantastic theme to me. Though you might think of something more interesting than snow-blowers to replace flamers..

Yeah I am sure I could come up with something fluff wise, but I dont know Necrons keep calling to me and I was wondering how effective a StormLord Close Combat army would be, using mainly Immortals, and Lychguard.

This is said purely as a question, but do you think that you've army hopped in the past as you were basing your decisions on what other people thought, and not what drew you to them?

Other peoples views are fine and all, but ultimately you should do what you like, if that's 'crons then do 'crons. At the end of the day this is a hobby and it's pointless to try and enjoy something that you're not really in to.

My first thought (before thinking of what I just wrote a second ago) was Space Wolves, if you want to stick to a pre-determined chapter, though the suggestions above sound fantastic too!

Alternatively stick to your crons as that's what seems to be driving you, at the end of the day they're a millenia old race that live underneath planets, fluffwise they could have been frozen in the ice, one immortal was unearthed by a clumsy guardsman or something, and this immortal then went on a rampage re-awakening his tomb world, and they all blew the crap out of everything.

On your other point of competitive-ness, sure the 'crons are still relatively new, though I don't think they'll have much of a problem with their new rules and weaponry!

There's a general consensus on Necrons and Close Combat that I've gathered. Don't.

Though I'd imagine it's doable if not easy - ultimately if you like necrons, you want necrons and that's what you feel is right for you - go for the crons, it might help you next jump around armies too if it's what you really wanted.

Ultimately, just have fun with it

Well If its an ice and snow based army. No army fits better than Space Wolves. They are "supposedly" the most broken army in the history of Warhammer but I can never win any games with them. I just cant figure them out.

Grey Knights are a lot of fun from what have seen. Necrons are MUCH better than what they used to be and from all their new vehicles, even if they are not the most powerful codex. They are one of the most fun to play. Especially since they have more than just a Gauss rifle as a weapon lol.

So My suggestion would be to look over the Grey Knight, Space Wolf and Necron Codex.

BTW. Were Kroot Mercs REALLY a codex? I know they exist in the tau army but I never seen a lot of the models that the army builder has in it.

Kroot Mercs used to be a Chapter Approved supplement.

I've been told that when the tau are redone the kroot may get to be a codex in their own right again (or at least that's what the people who make the books want to do)

That is part of it, the other part is just wanting to try new things out I just never truly grooved with some of the armies, I loved playing Kroot Mercs, but started to get people not wanting to play the White Dwarf list as its no considered illegal. I liked my Dark Eldar I just traded to play warmachine for a little while, I also liked my CSM but I was having them commisioned by someone and they never were finished. I am thinking I will go with Ice World themed Necrons with the Storm Lord guy as my leader as I really like the idea of imposing Nightfighting, Are Lychguard effective? should they be used in a unit of 5? with the storm lord mounted in something? these are the things unknown to me on Necrons. I may start out buying 2 Immortal, 1 Lychguard box and either the Ark or Monolith depending on which is better to support the troops.

That's where I gotta back out I'm afraid dude, I have no experience with the 'crons to offer any advice that could be deemed useful!

Before buying any models, buy the necron codex and read it. Learn it, love it. Once you got the rules down and understood, you can find it much easier to work out a list.

Unfortunately I think Lychguard may be just a bit pricey (points-wise) to field with true efficiency.

I have seen Jy2 and junk suggest and play a pretty effective Wraithwing force though.

Here's junk's thread.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/414475.page

And some of Jy2's wraithwing reports.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/418124.page

Just some additional thoughts, but using Wraiths (whipcoiled) with Lychguard might be an interesting experiment, it would give the lychguard a chance to strike first in combat, which in combination with their massive hitting power (scythes) would be huge. Or, if you were going the shield route, striking first would still be a huge advantage, and if you managed to wipe whichever squad you were charging, you would be reasonably safe as shots directed towards you could be reflected off to cause a little more damage! It might give you more reason to load the squad up with powerful characters as they wouldn't live in fear of being blown off the map after a successful melee (or at least if they were they would take a couple souls down with them for their trouble).

And if you're using troops as expensive as lychguard with tooled up characters, a monolith would probably be your best bet. That would let them teleport in and getting whittled down as you slogged across the field wouldn't be so big of a worry.

Correct me if i'm wrong about any of my assumptions, I only had the chance to skim the Necron codex relatively quickly.

This weekend I am going to look at the Necron Codex and the Grey Knight Codex, right now I like the Necrons models better but I like the small size of a grey knights army. However if I can manage a small sized army with Necrons that may be the best route. Lychgaurd are verycool models so I hope that they will be effective. a Monolith ShieldGuard force may be cool, in which stormlord makes it Night and the Monoliths Deepstrike in unleashing shield Lychguards to reflect shots and take charges.

I'd say go with the models you like best. If it's not space marine models even better I say. I am tired of seeing so many gosh darn it space marines!!!

My Armies: 8000 , 3000 , 8000 High Elf, 10000+ and goblin, 5000 Dwarf
