The McDonald's value meal McDouble or Chicken sandwich each have less than 400 calories. (380 and 360) If that is all you are getting, you're probably not getting fat let alone obese. That many calories three times a day is nothing for a guy doing any type of manual labor. It isn't healthy, but is sure isn't going to make you fat either.
Now, when I get 3-4 of them, and fries, and a bucket of soda I refill two times there starts to be an issue. And if I have enough to get all that (now we're talking 5-6 bucks, not a dollar) I could get healthier food that was halfway good tasting at the supermarket.
The soda (and at McDonald's in the US you can get EVERY single size for $1) is probably a big contribution.

which MIGHT matter if the part you cut out wasnt there, but it was.
but i guess you didnt read that bit AGAIN where is state it was already there...
so we are agreed then, people are to blame for their own habits, if D-usa is in the habit of skimming over stuff, fine its on you.
same with fat people, if you have a habit of eating junk food, its on you, not anyone else.
what kind of person can afford an acreage in the middle of no where, but not a vehicle? we are talking about the POORest of the poor, in suburban "food deserts" in the middle of cities...
also, what magical land do you live in where someone in the middle of no where, magically cannot get to markets, but has a mc donalds out in the middle of no where? do they have mc donalds right on the farm now?
please, explain why all the rich people are fat too if its all poverties fault that people are fat, and no one is responsable for their own eating habits?
The people who inherit the land, or for whom the land was cheap enough to buy, and then they fell on hard times afterward. I'm not suggesting there's a magical place where there is a mcdonalds and an arby's and who knows what else around but no grocery store, but there ARE places in the US where the only thing within several miles is a gas station, offering unhealthy and dubious food at best. There's unhealthy sources of food even if they're not the classic fast food choices. Even mom and pop diners (which are also a singular food place in some places) can provide rather unhealthy food. On top of that, the state of public transportation in the US is pretty woeful compared with what I understand other countries to resemble. Even in St. Louis, which has a fairly extensive bus network, doesn't have options in a lot of places.
Hell, in my pre-big boy job days, I lived in crappy housing that had a McDonalds next to it, and the closest grocery store had a part of town a white guy didn't walk through after dark between it. If I didn't have a car then, I'd have been in trouble.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not excusing every fat person. If you can make it to Wal Mart, you can probably eat healthy enough. I'm just saying that by the same token, sweeping generalizations the opposite direction aren't accurate either.
I have no explanation for rich people. There's the classic health problems for the minority as many people have been previously mentioned, but simple gluttony is a thing as well.

As someone who has to drive his daughter 13 miles to where the bus picks her up to then have it take her another 25 miles or so to school, let me assure you, public transportation does not serve my AO in SE rural Georgia at all. It isn't 'harder', it is nonexistent.

Like I've already said, easysauce's comments aren't really viable on this thread because he grew up in Canada. No offense to Canadians, but this thread is specifically about the United States.

Now, don't be so mean. Every person should be able to decide for themselves which person is more or less credible.
The random stranger who only says "I was poor once, but I live in a random city in a random place in the vast expanse known as Canada and I know for a fact that anybody anywhere has access to public transportation that is viable."
Or the random stranger who says "I took public transportation. I live in Oklahoma City and I took the #10 bus to the main terminal and the #5 bus to within 5 miles of my house. But the bus only runs once an hour when I needed it and never makes it closer than 5 miles to my house which is the distance to the grocery store where the bus stops to let me out before I walked the 8 km home from there. I know that my personal experience doesn't mean that all public transport is crappy, but it has taught me that not having good public transport options can be a struggle."
I'm sorry, the fact that you grew up in Canada makes your posts less viable considering this thread is specifically about the United States.
canada and the states, as well as austrailia, all have the same obesity problem, with well over 50% of the population being obese, and are all similar enough that its comparable for this topic.
im pretty sure canada is actually worse of the bunch RE obesity rates last I checked,
And its actually VERY pertinant to the question of this thread, as it shows that despite canada/austrailias abundance of social programs, healthcare, and other things that are lacking in america, we still have an obesity epidemic.
stop asking for personal information like where I live or grow up... this is the internet... all you need/get to know is it was in canada, in a major city
Thank you. The reason I ask is because you were making it seem like getting on a bus to get groceries was a trivial thing. I imagine that in Montreal or Toronto this is a true as it is in Chicago, New York, and Dallas.
However, 90% of the population lives outside of major cities. Bus services are sketchy, at best. Non-existent, at worse. We've been trying to explain that to you, but now I understand why it isn't sinking in. Your world view is too narrow.
That's OK. It will come in time as you get experience.
Maybe.

You may not put on a ton of weight due to the calorie count, but there are other factors involved with eating that stuff on a routine bases, the fat and salt content and lack of nutrients have a large impact on a lot of stuff in your body not just weight. A weakened immune system is just as bad or worse then being fat. Diabetes is triggered by several diet factors, not just the body weight. I know a few people who are diabetic despite being at a very healthy weight prior to developing it. Diet played a big role in why.
And as mentioned you can get a $1 fountain drink at a fast food place and get unlimited refills, which quickly stacks up the calories but the sugar levels are play havoc on the immune system.
When I was kid my parents got divorced and my dad had no money so when we'd have to stay at his palce in the summer one of the things we'd do was go down to the local burger king and get a super cheap $1 meals then hang out there for a couple hours as they had air conditioning (and his place didn't) meanwhile we'd get refill after refill of soda. With all the junk food two/three meals a day we'd come back from a two-three weeks stay at his place having put on weight and general feeling like complete crap due to the diet. The individual portions weren't that high on calorie count but your body does react differently to it then if you eat a similar intake but with healthy foods.
The excess salts, fats, and sugars are really tough on the body to process and that leads to a weakened immune system.

oh well in THAT case.... check your inbox for a PM with my address, phone number, local hangouts, private fears, measurements, safe word, unsafe word, and pictures of my redition of puppetry of the penis.
my main point is that canda has the same problem, but we do lots of stuff differently then the states, many of these being programs/services akin to what people in this thread say are "lacking" in the states, but if the programs we have in canada really would fix the obesity problems, why does canada still have a (worse) obesity problem then the states despite our functioning mass transit/health programs and so on?
the common denominator across CAN/US/AUSSIE is the marketing, rise of regular junk food as a socially acceptable alternative to regular home cooked meals, and the "its never my fault im _____" culture that dominates all 3 countries.
FYI busses up here do take a while... they do everywhere, but its perfectly doable if you plan ahead, a weekly hour or two on the buss to the market is still shorter then 21 10 minute drives to the local MC d's.
my experience with metro in the states has been that your busses are the same as ours, and your underground tube system is fething fantastic in comparison to our bus system (but not as good as london or paris's tube) I have taking public transit in NY city, Los angeles, seattle, miami, and plenty of places in europe,
they are all close enough that its definatly in the "pain in the butt" catagory compared to driving, but not in the not viable catagory, and quite often, given how bad traffic is in some metro areas, driving is slower then walking, and just as slow as bussing.
