I built a warded block room several layers thick to fight a wither. They just glitch straight through it after a small amount of time however.

How long do you estimate before a possible reset? I look forward to a new challenge, but can anything be brought over at all?

Well, I think it's safe to say that we should no longer heed any promises of being able to maintain modded worlds across versions. No-one can predict which mods will completely vanish or have a major rewrite. It's probably best to just have a firm policy from now on that the FTB server's world is reset with each major version. It generally tends to be needed anyway as people abandon systems and they become unmaintainable messes of lag. Long term stuff is best kept to the vanilla server.

Having said that, 1.6 looks awesome and it sounds like mods updating to 1.7 will take quite a while due to the huge changes Mojang have made under the hood. So we should be able to get a good amount of time out of 1.6, maybe even more than 1.5

As for the current world, well I know mentioning the "r" word tends to kill people's motivation, but FTB Team don't have their 1.6 launcher out yet, so while I can't speak for you lot, I'm still going to keep building. I still haven't tried quite a few things yet. I'm currently building all the protections and safe guards for me to take on a Wither for the first time ... :-P

Drifting Aimlessly Through Space

Well I look forward to the reset , having played with some 1.6 mods it should be good . I think i will take a a ore liberal approach , rather than powergaiming it . Haven't played unleashed since my me system crapped its items out somewhere so yeh ...

Still gonna work on things mind you, just asking how little or how much we can carry over.

Last time there were a few major mods dropping out and new major mods coming in. So if you'd made your base completely out of Redpower and Xycraft items, you were a bit screwed going to the new world compared to someone using all IC2 or Buildcraft etc.

They haven't released modlists for this time around, but I do know Thermal Expansion has been completely re-written, along with Thaumcraft, IC2 and apparently Biomes-o-Plenty.

I can't promise anything about inventories etc until there's more details available about the new pack(s).

After this version, the large changes in vanilla 1.7 will be a huge amount of work for mod devs and many are taking the opportunity to do complete re-writes. With this many mods involved in such huge packs, it's inevitable that there's going to be some churn between versions, at least until Mojang have their Mod API stable enough for a release.

I will be stopping the FTB server at around 7:30pm UK time (in 2 and a half hours from the time of this post), to dedicate server resources to the Vanilla Minecraft Enderdragon fight which is expected to have quite a few people joining.

I'll start the FTB server back up again soon after it's done.

So the FTB Launcher has been updated and can now launch 1.6 modpacks.

They've already added a new pack "FTB Horizons" and more are coming soon:

  • Horizons - a showcase for new or re-written mods, does not contain established mods like IC2, Buildcraft, Forestry, EnderChests etc. It is not balanced in any way, it's meant as a "try the new things" pack.

  • Direwolf20 - will contain the mods Direwolf20 will use in his Youtube series

  • MagicWorld 2 - mainly magic mods, little to no tech

  • TechWorld 2 - mainly tech mods, little to no magic


  • Two other packs have been hinted at but not confirmed as to what they are.

    There does not appear to be a "feature" pack similar to Ultimate and Unleashed (a nice mix of Tech and Magic). The only (currently announced) pack that looks to be similar is the Direwolf20 pack (as Direwolf20 has a habit of liking to throw in all the mods together).

    So going on current details, we may be moving back to the Direwolf20 modpack pack for 1.6 (unless one of the two unconfirmed packs turns out to be better - although I suspect they will likely be niche packs).

    No ETAs yet, as the DW20 pack still has to be released for testing and then marked as stable before I'll be happy to start a server with it.

    I almost wish they didn't do so much "Modpack" stuff, and instead just made a launcher where you could be all "I wanna use this mod, and this mod..." click click, launch, and you have the same world, but the mods are simply turned on or off. y'know, like the Mod API that Mojang is working on...

    Note that Mystcraft and PortalGun are not listed. I don't know about PortalGun, but Mystcraft might be left out due to the increased memory requirements of the new packs, along with other mods also adding their own dimensions like the Promised Land and the Deep Dark. Given that the Cave and Mega build ages were barely used, this isn't really the end of the world. The mining age would be missed, but perhaps we could set a rule to only quarry oceans or the Deep Dark (higher ore rates)?

    Alternatively, the Direwolf20 pack is still an option.

    No Factorization nor Ultimate Hybrid Solar Panels nor even Extra Bees/Trees?

    The loss of Factorization barrels alone will make the early game a nuisance. The loss of the Woodworker and Panelworker from Extra Bees/Trees will make designing floors less pretty. I had actually really gotten into that.

    Factorisation has always been every so slightly buggy and rarely used.

    The current Extra Bees/Trees versions are apparently crashy, so may be included later but that's random speculation, don't quote me on that.

    Not sure on the solars. :/

    From the thread, it seems that the exclusion of Mystcraft will be corrected soon.

    This JABBA seems like a great replacement for barrels, and that's pretty much the only thing I'll miss from factorization.

    Also, the thread states that the creator of Extra Bees/Trees is on vacation at the moment and will unbug the stuff as soon as possible. I have hope!

    Solars will be a loss, but they were super-cheaty anyways. It's just a super-unit you place down and you've beaten the game. As soon as I got my first Ultimate Solar, I could produce more at a surprising rate and everything became trivial. Not that it's a bad thing, but their exclusion means I actually have to think about designing for function as well as form again.

    From what I read, Logistics Pipes's creator had abandoned the project for a while and it had been picked up to be made into a v2 by others. Then the original creator came back and started work on a v3. Both are unfinished and drastically different than v1.
