So I have 5 of the old red blisters of Gobby Wolf Riders and a few other miscellaneous ones just sitting there, waiting to be assembled. While I know they're nothing particularly valuable, I can't help but feel sad opening something that I may well never have the chance to see again Does anyone else deal with this when unpackaging or assembling old models?

I only feel sad for keeping them if GW releases better looking plastics.

Have you not seen Toy Story being sealed in a blister and unbuilt/unloved makes toys sad.

Never. Get them on the table, use em and enjoy them as they rampage through your opponents forces.
Everyone knows older models are luckier models.

Not using old models is like leaving your teddybear in a closet. Get him out of there and snuggled up in your bed ASAP.

Hello,
Having been a collector of old toys for years I have many in boxes on a shelf, some I just have due to the people that gave them to me. With models I just let rip in most cases if I will use them in games, other wise they just go up on trade sites. If a person is trying to get the models as long as I did not mangle them they normally will not care if they are out of the box.

Regards,
Carl

No, spraying three colors on your minis does not count as painted! 5k+

If you have any reservations opening old blisters, send them to me and I'll gladly open them for you. I'll even take them off your hands if you want

I opened up a few blisters of Kryomek minis from like 1997 the other day. I'd bought these figures when I was a kid and it was kind of a strange feeling opening them up. Leaving them around as collector's items wasn't going to get me anywhere though, and I'd much rather have them on the table!

Probably work

I have a OOP Grey Knight Terminator in his blister. The OLD one, with the gun-sword, not the 3rd edition one. I've got about 10 of them in various states out of their blister packs, so I figure I'll just keep that one put away for a while.

I've got one blister of Squats I haven't opened.

Oh, and the "Demonslayer" dwarf from Gamesday, but that is not open only cause I never got around to painting it.

I've had many ideas of using the Squats are Inquisitorial henchmen, but just never got past the idea of actually opening it.

Most newer packaging is boring, but the older figures had all sorts like the Doctor Who ones with daleks on them. Unless I intend to sell, I'll open them anyway.

No, I don't feel guilty. These miniatures are not wine oder cheese, which gets better the older it is.
So just open them up and paint them

What is this guilt you speak of?

Open the packet and be damned. A toy not played with is not a toy WORTH playing with.

As for those wine "collectors" who buy wine as investments, and NEVER ever even drink their collections... How the hell do you know it's worth collecting if you never drink the stuff? It may as well be turpentine in the bottle for all the difference the liquid makes.

Each bottle not consumed, is a bottle wasted. You may as well pour it down the sink (as these wines are not collected for flavour but label and name and "marque"). You don't muck about with wine - you bloody well drink it.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

You nailed it, the only reason these wines are worth money is because some snooty git in a suit with a french-sounding name tried a glass once, and said 'Sacre Bleu! That's a damn good beverage!' and so it got pricey, and now people think that the wine is just as tasty despite sitting in a dusty room turning to vinegar over the years, and it gets pricier and pricier until its just bounced around between yuppies' cellars without ever coming close to a beer bong or a university hall of residence recycling bin

As for minis, I would say that I have NOTHING in their original boxes/blisters (except the newest space hulk, but thats a board game so it doesnt count), minis were meant for playing, painting and otherwise enjoying, not sitting in boxes in their packaging. So crack them open and enjoy them for what they are, toys that can be justifiably played with by grown-ups!

Every time a mini goes into a cupboard in it's packaging never to be seen again, an 'Eavy metal painter sheds a tear

Keep them in their blisters unless you have immediate plans to assemble and paint them.

You never know when you might want to sell them, and having them in-blister will dramatically raise their value.

I had the same quandry recently about an MK2 marine RT blister.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/400460.page

I tried a couple of times to sell it for a good price, but got no bites, so It's 4 months later and I still haven't opened the blister.

I like RT marines enough that I will likely eventually paint up one or two of them and sell or trade the last one.

For your situation I would do the following depending on what your intentions are.
1) If you want to paint them, go ahead and open them. No point in not enjoying figures just because they're in the blister
2) If you don't want to paint them, sell them off. No point in keeping something around if you're not going to use it, and someone else might apprecaiate the NIB status.

I don't see what the big deal is. If it's OOP, and you don't want to open it, just explain it to your opponent and play with it in its packaging...

My god, I am literally in awe. I can never leave my model in the pack, especially the metal ones. I will have to try this one time with a box of minis.

I collect Battletech miniatures in NIB condition so I have a hard time opening those. On the rare occasions that I do open older Battletech models its because their packaging is in such a state of decal that they are barely NIB in the first place.

Other game systems are less of a problem for me. Over Christmas I opened up a Squat plasma gunner blister pack and gave a momentary pause as I pulled the plastic shell away from the cardboard because I knew there was one less NIB version of that figure in the world.

So, in my case it is less guilt but a reverence of the items in question. Battletech was and is my favorite wargame so I have a huge nostalgia streak for its products. I am newer to 40k, but I can still appreciate items that are nearing antique status, especially when you know your actions are reducing the population of collector grade pieces.

I only have one miniature in its blister, but I can't open it. It is an original Howling Banshee Exarch in a blister with a price on in French Francs!

I also have some plastics (RTB Beakies) still on their sprues that I can't cut off. Mind you, those Beakies are only one sprue. I have another 80+ Beakies already assembled, and mostly badly painted and in need of stripping and repainting, so it is not like I need any more right now...

I don't think I would open stuff from RT days. Eventually it will be worth something. Maybe not for another 30 years but give it time. If it is a collectible, then it is worth something eventually. Besides if you really want to play with a mini like that, go buy one cheap from ebay and keep the old on in the package.

Of course I am a big collector. My dad got me collecting things when I was little. Heck just today he just asked me to research some info on these:

They are bubble gum records that are in rolling stones album covers. He bought them for like $0.25 each back in 1984. They got to be worth something by now.

I hate doing it. I had to take some OOP Lascannon Havocs out of their packaging, and it broke my heart, sort of.

I still have a couple models still in packaging. I also have some special edition yugioh cards in the... sleeve? Wrapper? Eh. I dunno. I know I have them though. The 10th anniversary pack thing.
