Subject: At what point do you stop collecting an army?

And why? I'm just curious as I can't seem to stop collecting my Chaos. I imagine a lot of people stop when they get to a certain amount of points, so whats that value at? Do you just collect all the models you want? Personally I guess I just tend to keep getting stuff as I want it for the sake of theme in the army. At this point my Chaos army is nearing (if not already well past) a points value to where I will never be able to field all of it anyways, and yet I know I'm not going to stop. I still have my projects for making a 3k+ army for each faction of Chaos. And after that I'm seriously thinking of doing the same thing for Daemons. Which I guess is another question, whats the biggest points game you would be willing to play?

I try to cap my armies at 3K but I know my beasts can go to 5K if I feel like it. The only way I stop a army is if I start a new one sooo yahh.... Never ending cycle

My problem is I cant even stand the other 3 gods. I started playing this game in the middle of 6th ed with a Khorne Beasts of chaos and every army I have every played besides necrons has had Khorne themes.
But I just started empire so here is to hoping

I used to be the same way actually. Only Khorne that is. Then I read the Sigvald book and I think that is when I truly started the decent into madness.
Bah Empire... many a feeble human has fallen victim to Chaos. I say you make them Khorne themed!

Well there is just so much you can do. As chaos you could get Throgg and start a troll army, get the TAMURKHAN and do a united chaos force with beastmen and daemons. Having just worked up 2,500 worth of Beastmen I am considering chariots and minotaur, centigors as a fun way of playing the same army.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

At the moment I've got a Khorne, Slaanesh, and Troll army. The Idea is to go for Nurgle, Tzeentch, and a Norse army. Afterwords I would love to do Nurgle Daemons for the sake of having a combined force led by my Tamurkhan.

Well for 40k its easy, I go until I can completely max out the force org chart, plus get some extras so I can vary up the list a bit... unless we're talking Tau in which case I go until I can completely spam every unit in the book plus forgeworld stuff O_O
its a lot harder for fantasy with the lack of the chart, my ogres are sitting at 4 (old) battalions plus a couple extra boxes of gnoblars and some homemade rhinox riders... and I'd like to expand that with more options so I can play with some of the new units... and I technically have a large daemon army (which is constantly getting larger) from 40k as well that I have yet to try on the tabletop

I'd like to think I'd stop at a competitive 3000pts (which I suppose, for me, is really ~3500pts for flexibility). If I ever get a new army, I'm definitely going to try to limit myself to under 3500pts... But I know I'll probably be tempted enough to buy maybe an extra unit here or there for that "extra flexibility".
I can easily put together a competitive 3000pt list w/ both of my armies. But there are still some units I want (Corsairs, Cold One Knights) or want more of (2nd Organ Gun, 2nd Grudge Thrower, 10 more Hammerers, 25+ more Witch Elves), but I really want to stop spending the $$ *cross fingers*. So realistically, for armies I already own, I suppose I'm not sure when I'd stop...

That's kind of what I did with my Slaanesh army. Planned on taking it to 3k, but then I went a little bit further as to take different units depending on how I feel. But I suppose I get carried away, because flexibility soon turns into "lets just expand"

I imagine my Daemons army will continue to grow, the aim is to be able to field at least a 2000pts mono god list for each god, I have tzeench and nurgle covered so far.
Other armies, such as my DE I generally have a list in mind for a comp that I will build up.
After I build an army Ill probably just buy stuff if it looks cool and add it in.

I Have at this time 7000 points of Beastmen. And I will no longer add new stuff to them. my WoC are around the 5k mark and my Ogres are on hold.
Normaly I stop adding to armies when I pass the 6k mark. Simply because of the space needed to store so much stufff

I suppose I'm just too fond of having excessively big armies.
I think my Orcs are currently resting at around 15,000 if I push them to it.
My Chaos... well... lets just not talk about it.
I guess its almost just frustrating because I know I will still continue to get more.
I imagine that when I get around to doing my Dark Eldar when 6th ed comes out I will be able to hold myself back and stop between 2k-2500 because I'm not too big on the fluff of them, nor do I like apoc that much.
But Fantasy (and I think namely the theme alongside the modelling possibilities) and chaos in particular seem to consume me.

I don't collect.
But as a strategist, I find when most people say they got 3K or whatever, that's throwing every single last thing they own on the table, whether it makes sense or is valid or compliments the rest of the army or jives with a strategy or not.
If you want to switch between full strategies, like going fast-moving or point-denial or lots of hammers, you need a truly monstrous amount of points.
And from what I've seen , people can get bored of throwing down the same (or nealy the same) configuration each time they play. Which is why Heroes/Lords are so cool because you can often change a lot about your army and strategy by what they purchase, which doesn't have to be especially represented. Like the same Slann model could be a 275 or 625 character or anywhere in between. Which is a lot cheaper on the pocket than buying an extra batallion.

I play SM in 40k so don't lynch me, but I want to have one of every model. Then I can get more...... The madness continues.
