I've been almost hard at work, so there's been plenty of time for me to fill out my fluff for my Necron Dynasty, the Sertek Dynasty. Originally I had three characters in two dynasties, but I figured they could all be in one. This fourth one I've created is part of the Phaeron's Royal Court.

Azan the Eternal……………………………….200 points

Azan, the most trusted Overlord from S’et’s Royal Court, was entrusted this one-of-a-kind body shortly before the bio-transference as a gift of service. Azan won thousands of battle in the name of the Sertek Dynasty, and was perhaps the best armsman in the entire Dynasty. The body is a prototype, designed by the greatest Cryptek minds in the Sertek Dynasty, of a special body made out of an advanced type of Living Metal. This material was as destructible as any Living Metal, but due to the strange nature of the material, it is capable of reforming within an instant from even the most grievous injuries and as adept at shape-shifting as the most skilled Callidus Assassin, almost as if the body was made of a liquid rather than a solid material. An enemy who may think they have snuck up on the Eternal would be surprised when the Eternals body moves out of the way, with the attacker hitting nothing but air where the Eternals torso was not a moment ago. Survivors of charges led by Azan speak of a metal warrior whose very form ebbs and flows around each swing of an enemy’s blade, taking pause only when injured, if only to reform around the foes weapon, cackling madly and wresting the blade from their hands while it is still inside him.

WS:6 BS:4 S:5 T:5 W:3 I:2 A:4 Ld:10 Sv:3+

UNIT TYPE: Infantry (Character)
WARGEAR: Black Lance

Black Lance: The Black Lance was a weapon of Azans own design, crafted years before the bio-transference. It functions almost identically to a Crypteks Abyssal Staff, but was modified to have the same effect in close combat as well.
R:Template S:10 AP:1 Type: Assault 1, Shroud of Despair*
Shroud of Despair: To Wound roll from the Black Lance’s shooting attacks are made against the target’s Leadership, rather than toughness. The Black Lance’s shooting attack has no effect on vehicles.

The Black Lance functions the same way in close combat, counting as a power weapon with strength 10 and the Shroud of Despair rule against models with a Leadership value. Against vehicles, Azan has the Entropic Strike special rule.

SPECIAL RULES: Eternal Warrior, Reanimation Protocols, Ever-Living, Eternal, Independent Character

Eternal: Even though Azan is quite capable of avoiding the shots and blows from an enemy without so much as moving his feet, his liquid metal body contains a greater power: a hyper-advanced Reanimation Protocol unlike anything the Necrons had seen before. Azan's protocols are constantly active, healing wounds that range from cuts to partial body loss the microsecond they occur.

Azan always passes his Reanimation Protocols or Ever-Living roll on a d6 roll of 3 or higher. On a roll of 6 on either Reanimation Protocols or Ever-Living, Azan stands backup with two wounds remaining. Azan also has a 3+ Invulnerable save.

C&C is welcome! I'm really trying to have my characters as balanced as possible, because I am planning on using them at some point. The only thing I'm iffy about is the against vehicles portion of the Black Lance. I really have no idea how it should affect vehicles, if it even should affect them at all outside of simply using his normal strength.

T5 is needed, and maybe WS 5; 7 is quite high for any Necron - Sv for overlords starts at 3+, and maybe 3 wounds

I'd put him at 150 points after that.

Varguard Obyron is WS6, and I want this guy to be at least on par with him. I find it odd that Necrons who have fought gods and won thousands of battles still only have WS or BS4, despite being ancient warmasters.

Also, do you mean Inv save? or should I also give him an armor save? I'm going for more of a Martian Manhunter meets the T-1000 thing with this guy, minus the arm weapon thing the T-1000 does.

I would start with the Ctan, who use basicly what your describing, and scale it back from monstrous creature status.

So ctan have ws5 s7 t7 w4 i4 4 attacks 4++ inv and eternal warrior. They ignore armor in cc and get 2d6 penetration.

For your guy, the ws5 can stay, and we pull back the s and t to 5, as its not a MC. w4 becomes w3 for an overlord as you described in fluff instead of a MC, same with a4 to a3. 4++ inv and eternal warrior stay. You would lose the MC ignore armor saves and 2d6 penetration, but you gain your weapon. Grant FnP to represent how small attacks basicly get reformed. Finally his everliving is always counted as if with a res orb, thus on a 4+, which only applies to him and does not stack with other res orbs in the squad.

So in the end, he has a weapon that is comparable to vargard's warscythe, and his 4++/FnP compares well to Vargard's 2+ versus non-powerweapon wounds. Eternal Warrior, 4++ inv/FnP, and EL on a 4+ is a simple way to represent the living metal within the boundries of the rules, and is in place of Vargard's cloak and extra attacks special rules. I like ws5 on your character both for the synergy with c'tan and also it is just slightly worse than Vargard (who I view as the most skilled of the necron fighters) while better than any other overlord.

I meant he should have a 3+ armour save, as well as his invuln. It's not odd at all; they didn't fight gods. They fought the old ones, using the immense energies of the c'tan, and in the process lost their physical bodies - their reactions, their instincts, their souls. All they have left is battle programming, which, while adaptable and powerfully scripted, is still little compensation for centuries of experience and honing, coupled with innate talent and more than a little warp assistance.

The thing about the necrons is that most of their power is in their technology and their c'tan-harnessing. Take that away, and they're basically like every other bunch of slackers; conscript statline - because even their accuracy comes from targeting algorithms.

What I'm saying is that even built for CQC, WS 5-6 seems appropriate; WS7 has guardsmen hitting him on a 5+ instead of 4+, which implies unnatural speed and agility, as well as training - something even the wraiths don't have anymore.

I thought it was the Great Sleep that caused them to lose their reactions and speed. The codex doesn't really say.

Why they relied on programming and algorithms rather than simply downloading their consciousness into their machine bodies, I'll never understand.

Thanks guys for the feedback! I'll mess with my character in the OP.

@Necronmike: Yup. I'll see if I can't get this guy and the others I have into some games at my local GW store and some with my friends who also play.

His Eternal rule is way too powerful.

4+ Invuln, 4+ RP, 4+ FNP (including against ID!), eternal warrior and will nerf his opponents offense!!!

It's just too unbalancing. You need to tone him down or jack up the price much more. Currently, as an opponent, I wouldn't let you use him against me.

Thanks! I might end up doing both, actually.

Removed the save, FnP, Reanimation Protocols, and Ever-Living, and replaced them all with the Eternal rule.

Instead of an 'eternal' save, perhaps call it an invulnerable save? No need to create a new type of save really.

Right, why not just parse him out like an overlord with a phase shifter and a rez-orb, but improve his RP to a 3+. That way you don't need to invent new mechanics. Just make sure you pay an appropriate tax for the improve RP.

The Eternal save was a produce of no sleep and a bunch of ideas. Now, however, he costs about as much as an Overlord with a Phase Shifter, Res Orb, and Phylactery combined with a Cryptek with an Abyssal Staff. The cost of the improved RP and new CC weapon is buried in there somewhere.
