I have been pondering this for a while. I just built orks from the Assault on Black Reach box and a few of the models were a pain to paint. I have come to believe that the big shoota boys in the black reach box are the hardest models to paint: their gun is attached at the belly and there are some nooks that even a fine detail brush cant hit. What do think is the most difficult model to paint in 40K?

Gems aren't so bad to paint.

Really, any model has potential to be insanely difficult to paint, depending how you go about doing it.

Mind. Blown.
That Avatar...

Yeah, you can dedicate tremendous efforts to any single model, but I think the OP was more talking about model peculiarities that make them a pain to paint even at average standards.

Speaking of standards, I'm tempted to nominate banners. If you don't want to use transfers, better improve your drawing skills.

For me personally, it is Tyranid Hive Tyrants...

I have 3 metal ones, and holding them while painting is seriously awkward, which is really the factor that for me makes them difficult to paint well.

After that, for me is the Stonehorn/Thundertusk model, and anything else for me may not be easy to make look good, but provide me a good challenge to work with.

Heavily detailed models are pretty difficult. Vulkan He'stan was a decent challenge, a very busy model. About 3/4 of the way through I just wanted it to be over. I have a Helbrecht commission lined up and he looks like he'd be a good challenge as well.

Orks overall strike me as a bit more difficult to paint (well, painting well). Such must chipping, rust, damage, etc. Even moreso for checker/ zag markings.

I've found the fire warriors to be horrid. The bad molds do nothing for them.

I don' think the OP is asking what is the most detailed model. He is asking what is the most difficult, as in robes and areas on the model that get in the way, or even the weight or size of the model.

For me, the most detailed model I've painted is the ork warboss from the Aobr set.

The Humies Waste presious time with slow and boring speeches; While the Oks just get it over and done with in one simple WAAGGGHHHH!!

Black Templars...Straight Primer is the worst and I really tire of seeing marines sprayed black with white shoulder pads.
But when you start adding bits from the templar box with all the chains, baubles, crusader seals, tunics, etc they can be a pain. After that probably an archon or haemonculus. DE skin is stuipd and they carry a lot of trinkets on them.

They’re on a constant Crusade, keeping it real for the Emperor and not bumming around like the other guys. They hate psykers and can’t ally with them. They’re basically an entire chapter of Chaplains. CC lunatics. What every Space Marine should aspire to be, if not trapped in a Matt Ward nightmare.

Call me crazy but i think space marines are hardest to paint, well at least. Theres such a stigman attached to the marines that if you dont do a really outstanding job you (can) get heavely critisized, just because everyone has seen some really good marines and therefore kind of hold marines up to a differt/tougher standard than say deamons or tau or other less common armies. But from a technical level I think that alot the tryanids are realy hard to paint, they have those deep resesed area that are a pain to get to and do correct.

My hardest was the damnable terminator librarian! So many lucky charms and keys and books and scrolls and eagle badges and cables!

He started off with the staff, and ended up with the sword after I dropped him from about two inches! Gah! Resin!

Still, he looks very cool now, but he will never leave my display cabinet!

Most awkward: Exorcist tank. Definitely paint before assembly

Most fiddly: Harlequins. Have fun making a unit look coherent.

Most difficult: Tactical Marines. Boring flat surfaces in uniform colours. Even makes NMM look crap :(
