Subject: Reaper Miniatures revolutionary new casting method
It's been a while since I last checked in on the news from Reaper Miniatures (not since last May) and, as you might imagine, I got quite a shock when I went to their site.
It seems that while GW has invested in Finecast (a revolutionary new substance made from the frozen tears of unicorns capable of producing details so fine you'd think you sculpted them yourself) Reaper has also been pushing back the boundaries of science with their own revolutionary new material.
Known as 'metal' it is more resilient than Finecastium, able to survive falls and even endure an afternoon in a hot car, all without the bubbles and miscasts that occasionally plague Finecastium models.
So let's see what they're up to!
Kallaguk, King of the Trolls normally spends his time in his mother's basement posting long rants about the lack of Squats in the Black Library and explanations of why marines must be gay but now you too can own him in miniature form made from the revolutionary new material 'metal'.
George and Gracie... 90% of the readers won't get the reference, the rest of us are wondering why they bothered with it when it looks nothing like them.
Say goodnight...
Tired of having to field great white weresharks? Don't you wish you could mix things up a bit? Well now you can have a hammerhead wereshark to go with them!
And it's made from the revolutionary new substance 'metal'! Actually it's not just metal, it's the even more revolutionary substance LEAD!
Looking for a new C'tan shard? Well look no further than the Pharaoh Dragon!
And it's made from 'metal'!
Yes Mr. Sinisthreax, how can I help you?
Well as a Darkreach Warlord I find myself needing some evil armor. But I'm tired of getting my long flowing hair tangled up in evil spikes.
Well sir I have just the thing with our asymetrical spikey armor.
I like it, can I get it with the optional excessive sheathes and daggers?
Right this way sir!
Oh and what about my henchman? Do you have something that makes him look like a walking marital aid?
Naturally sir!
Here we have 3 mini monsters based on classic creatures from the Monster Manual. It's been a while but if I recall right these are a displacer beast, a rust monster and a gelatinous cube.
To steal a joke from Dave Barry, there's a good reason Sumo puts 400 pound men in diapers. And that reason is the pure sex appeal.
Was someone looking for new Jokkero?
The nice thing about this figure is how it tells a story. The DM says that hold person doesn't affect Orcs so Khalib is flipping through his copy of Unearthed Achena to show him he's wrong.
For me the best thing about Reaper is their sheer creativity. While GW works on one army at a time, adding maybe a unit or two every few years you never know what Reaper will churn out month to month. Weresharks, cowboys, the cast of Sucker Punch... it's just mad!
For example here we have an elf! And she's hawt! And she has a bow!
Will the creativity never end!
Included for those who want some alternate scarab swarms.
I just love the armor on this new line of marines! It is really sincerely good.
Though I'm not sure why he's carrying his circa 1984 tape deck into battle.
I must resist the temptation to make steampunk necrons...
RESIST!
Ah Lola Darkslip, I have an earlier version of her somewhere. Tell me, isn't she born to be a bondage ninja in an =I= army?
Here we see a paladin reacting to the news about 5th edition D&D
The great thing about this model is how many ways you can use it. It can be a racist sheriff from Georgia, a racist sheriff from Louisiana or a racist sheriff from Texas. The possibilities are limitless!
Here we have another model that tells a story. The apprentices were playing cricket when Rory hit the ball into the vacant lot so Drake had to go find it in the weeds.
Spoiler:
He found it!
They're continuing with their prepainted line, and honestly, it's pretty darn good.
This model reminds me of something but I just can't put my finger on it.
Not without giving my wife a shock anyway.
Here again, so many uses, this could be the ghost of a judge back from the dead to seek justice, or the spectre of a judge back from the dead to seek vengence.
I don't get how this could be a Cleric of Calistria when everyone knows clerics can't use edged weapons. Maybe she's on her way to compete in Iron Chef?
Here we see Gologh the Vicious, bashfully shuffling his feet after Ogrong the Bloodthirsty complimented his axe technique.
And finally... there is nothing about this model that is not awesome. From the angler fish helmet to the giant hook... He's just smexy.

Haha, you got me. Very cool skeletal dragon, and some of those pointy ears ain't bad either.
The robots are pretty radical too.

They should have released that Paladin before the Broncos lost in the playoffs last week.

The zombie dragon is nice, the rest seem dated to me for some reason. I feel that way about most of reapers mini's.

I love the detail metal can get, they seem to have better facial expressions than many plastics. It's not true for all plastic minis or even most.
3 things metal has never been able to offer that plastic has
ease of conversions (shopping, sanding, etc.)
Light weight.
paint bonds better to plastic.
Unfortunately, from what I understand plastic production is significantly higher unless you do the whole multiple sprue thing. But as far as individual packaged minis metal seems to be the economical choice.

Something bearing a passing resemblance to a Displacer Beast, something vaguely similar to a Neo-Otugh, and something very close to a Beholder.

Yet, if long experience with a substance very similar to 'metal' is any guide, the weapon will be bent and impossible to straighten properly.
These models run the gamut from the good through the bad to the ugly. I like the robots - I wish Orks still had Tinboyz. The Orcy model (assuming that's what Gologh the Vicious is) looks great too - nice to see a different take on greenskins.

Looks a lot like a Deadlands Hanging Judge. Jeff Valent Studios released a mini, but this one is admittedly better. Lots of very similar elements, specifically the bandoleer and pistol bayonet design. Both are probably based off the same art, though.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Ah, Reaper has a license for Savage Worlds minis, and Deadlands is a Savage Worlds setting nowadays, so that explains it...

Is this marvelous substance mined on some distant planet, where crews of Reaper technicians mine away beneath the lush jungle, under constant attack by blue skinned aliens?
