Anyone have any good tips for making muddy trench bases?

I plan to use them for some Krieg dudes.

I guess not really bases showing them inside the trenches, but more the running accross no-mans land.

Thinking barb wire, puddles etc.

Search for a P&M blog called "Muddy Times." DoubleT, I think his name was, did exactly what you want to and it looked fantastic. Should give you plenty of reference shots, as well as a bit of a tutorial (I believe it was a page or two into the thread).

You need to learn MMM! (magic mud mixing)

Usually a variation of PVA glue, sand, static grass, and gakky coloured paint. Add whatever other textures and crud you want to the mix and slap it on basically. You can add gloss varnish to the mix for a wetter look, or puddle it up afterwards for specific wet patches.

The Flagellant kit comes with wooden bits that make for great duckboard.
The tiny baby sized skulls on chains are a plus, they make great cultist moldels too.

The trick with mud is to basically do a normal dirt base with sand and flock, but use way too much glue on purpose so you end up with smooth patches between the grains. After you paint it all splotchy brown, you can either use shiny paint, gloss varnish or thin layers and pools of water effect in the flat spaces.
