I am wondering what dakka thinks about Lysander.
Sternguard Squad or Assault Terminators?
Offensive or defensive?
Drop Pod?
And, as a secondary note, what do you all think about him fluff wise?
I usually use him with shooty terminators and use them as assault terminators, not sure how smart it is, but basically on my way to assault, just about every shot I make hits, and then I have my chainfist termies and when I assault a vehicles, there's no point rolling, it's dead, and I have the 3++ to keep me not dead.

Lysander is a goddamn wrecking ball. I love him. He can be used effectively with a Sternguard squad; drop podding a squad of 10 in with Lysander into enemy territory and assassinating a key unit is a great tactic. Expensive, but cool. The only problem is on the counter attack they'll get mauled, but it can work if they're well supported.
One of my favorite ways to run him is with tactical Terminators. I sometimes roll a big stupid deathstar of 10 with 2 cyclones and Lysander and put them right in the middle of the field. I should try deep striking them more, but they've got great area denial - nobody wants to get hit by 20 stormbolter shots, with or without the help of the cyclones.
Sticking him with assault Terminators is thematically cool, but redundant. There's nothing he can do in combat they can't do already. It's kind of a waste, even if it looks cool.
Generally he's an offensive character with great close combat ability and rules that make closing the gap much easier. Defensively he boosts one ruin and gives your army stubborn, which is a double edged sword. The fortified ruin is great if you have an objective with marines on it, or, better yet, sniper scouts, whose only job is to survive.
I think his fluff is the best kind of ridiculous, and is pretty fun.

That's what I do when I do sternguard. I drop pod them, and shoot until something assault them. They usually win, with just Lysander and the PF sarge surviving, and I go one to assault again. used right, this can kill 3+ units of the enemy, 1-2 with shooting, 1 with the squad getting assault and potentially 1 if lysander and his sarge are lucky. Automatically Appended Next Post: I find it weird that he has a ballistic skill and no ranged weapons though, models like that always confuse me.

its for completeness. Wouldn't it be odd for a vaunted 1st captain to have worse BS then an Ork?
its also so when he has a Vortex Grenade in appoc he can toss it accurately.

I hadn't thought about vortex grenades...hm...I just figured it would be like how they factor bonus attacks into the profile.

Yeah I remember many people complaining about how Lysander was too "unfocused" to be used effectively since he is basically a close-combat BMF with skills that support ranged combat...
Personally I like him, even if you put him with a pure close combat unit like Hammer Terminators he is no force multiplier but he's sure to beat any foes face in and survive.
In the end, putting him with Sternguard is probably the best use. It makes an already strong unit even stronger and puts the enemy in a dilemma of engaging that shooty unit in a shoot out or assaulting and facing the one man Army which is Lysander (+ the Sternguard which aren't that bad themselves).

I'd put him in a sternguard unit, and drop pod them into the field. He alone will make anyone think twice about assaulting the sternguard.

I run him an all drop pod army.
For me he usually drops with a TAC squad. The Sternguard are going to be emptying combi-meltas into anything with an armor value first turn so they won't benifit from Bolter Drill as well.
With the TAC's the enemy now has another huge problem. If they don't pin him in close combat Lysander is free to run around breaking things. If they do pin him they have to deal with the ten man squad, a powerfist sarg, and Lysander. All the while the sternguard as now running around.
Plus, having stubborn is pretty much mandatory for my list.

Replace his storm shield with Dorn's Arrow from Pedro Kantor's model I've always thought that pure close combat units don't fit the space marine model of war. 'They won sir, because we couldn't reach them.' Seems like a clever astartes would sneak at least a bolt pistol.

Better yet, give him a wrist-mounted storm bolter/ flamer option.
