Hello again Dakka,
As you all know there is currently a kit of Sternguards out, but to our distress, it contains only 5 of them. I don't like having 50 of the same looking marines in my army and I try to individualise as much as possible, soooo, does anybody have any tips on converting Sternguards so I don't have the same marines almost 10 times over.

Get normal marines and paint their helmets a different color, thats originally how vets were distinguished. Attach on some scopes to their botlers too if you have any
If you feel that you need even more, additional purity seals, different helmets, use some other different marine parts like sang guard

Hmmm yeh. I was thinking they would be more ornate though, in terms of their armour, you know due to them being members of the 1st Company.

By looking at gw's sternguards they are basically tacticals with fancy guns. Just swap the magazine on bolter to stormbolter magazine (fairly easy to scratch build) and bam you got yourself some sternguard. If you want to go a bit further you could make a tube full of purity seals and then dip your dudes in glue and then in purity seals and bob's your uncle. Also I know insaniak (that cat moderator dude) has made a tutorial somewhere in the tutorial section about how to make those roman weed things. Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.
If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in. |

If you're happy to do a bit of filling/ filing, what about some of the parts from other space marine ranges, sanguinary guard have very ornate armour and unlike the death company they aren't too blood angely.
Or the dead cool tyrannic war veterans? There is a little bit of ultramarine iconography there, but I doubt it would be an insurmountable task to cover up.
You could check out the chapter upgrade sprues, perhaps the hooded bodies of the dark angels?
Chaos space marine bolters are different but not obviously chaosy from what I can see.
My vets are marked out by a variety of ways: having drum magazines taken from ork shootas, chainsword bayonets (helps to remind me they have 2 base attacks), Death watch shoulder pads and bolters (they are the "spiritual" predecessors to the sternguard after all.) and generally just attaching extra bitz to them.

laurels IMO. And if your willing to spend the money on them you can always get the honor guard shoulderpads. They are very ornate and will look very good if put on a bunch of regular marines. You can also get the scopes sperately as they had them in previous plastic kits for tac squads. Might be a pain but if you can find a marine player who never used them you might be able to get a lot of them.

Depending on how willing to commit you are?
You can check out Forge World's various armor "Marks" and the different pattern Bolters in the "Infantry Accessories" subsection of the Space Marines category. They come 5 to a set, and you can mix things up a bit by adding two different Marks to a set or use them in conjunction with other various kits to make something truly yours.

You could also try picking up some of the different FW Mk Patterns that are, at this time, cheaper than Finecast Sternguard by about $12, excluding shipping.

If you don't want to go FW route then you can't go wrong with using the command squad guys and some green stuff.
The death watch kit also has the perfect boltguns to use.

I have several Sternguard and not one of them is the same...maybe because mine are a little older. Might try looking in that direction. I know most people prefer to buy new, but sometimes I find it worthwhile to go further back for some of the more unique models.
I know its fuzzy and horrible but you get the idea...I need to get a new camera
