With the release of Ultramarines and the variable reviews it got (to put it politely) but still hearing from far too many people that the universe of 40k would/could make for a great film.

This got me wondering, which of the Black Library books or even any of the great stories in 40k would you want making into a film? And why?

Faith and Fire

1. It's got Sisters of Battle.
2. Everything a newbie needs to know in advance can be explained in three sentences: "Psykers draw energy from a dimension called the Warp, and nearly destroyed human civilisation. The God-Emperor of Mankind rebuilt the Imperium with his Great Crusade. The Sisters of Battle hate the former (for obvious reasons) and worship the latter (for obvious reasons)."
3. It's not about Space Marines fighting Space Marines who'd killed some Space Marines. It actually features humans - and female humans, at that!

Necropolis. There might need to be a bit of explanation as to the nature of Chaos, but then again, there might not, as the book itself seems to be written assuming you already know what Chaos is and doesn't strike me as particularly hard for a newcomer to grasp. For non-40k fans a story about two cities going to war in the far future is straightforward to follow anyway.

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

something without a ton of space marines, as I don't think you could properly portray them with normal actors

Eisenhorn

or Ciaphas Cain

The Ciaphas Cain Series

Dark humor, great action scenes, interesting characters and one could get really creative with the narrator in the movie, kind of like in the Princess Bride.

Titanicus would be so epic. Eisenhorn would be best I think for a movie

Do you think gw movies are destined for purely animated features or can a live action movie work?

I think GW movies need to be live action to make the jump from poverty that Ultramarines was. That set an awful precedent but luckily for GW nobody but GW fans ever saw it. Obviously, however, GW can't provide or source the $200M it would cost to do a really excellent live action Space Marine film. The best hope they have is for someone like Christopher Nolan (because he can just do what he wants in terms of getting films into production right now) to suddenly develop a deep love and understanding of the fluff.

Narratively, Imperial Guard make for the best film possibilities (I've never read an IG novel) but GW will always push for a story revolving around Awesomius Awesomeo and his gotta-buy-em-all cadre of cool marines. I think the story of rank and file guardsmen that do something extraordinary in defence of their planet would be amazing on film and allows for plenty of interjection from mighty Space Marines leading the charges.

It has got to be the Gotrek & Felix series

Reasons

1) The stories are incredible
2) Everyone knows what a dwarf is
3) Felix is a character that's very easy to sympathise with, and really grows as a character throughout the series
4) You don't have to explain what everything is and the whole heresy stuff as you would if it was a 40k novel, you can pretty much put everything down to "good" and "evil" for non warhammer followers
5) So many stories to allow for a massive development across the entire series
6) Humour, drama, love, revenge, plot twists, the good guys don't always win - it's got the lot
7) This list will go on and on, so I'll leave it there, but G&F would be a great place to start if someone were to do a big screen warhammer movie

Dead Men Walking for sure! A grim, largescale conflict with a personal sidestory (with a love interest, so hollywood is happy as well).
Though (with pain in my heart, as I love them) the DKoK would have to be subbed with another regiment as they're kinda hard to relate to. It would just be faceless guys fighting faceless robots.

Also, totally different angle, maybe a Calpurnia story. I intensely disliked the books because they were sooo slow, but if you cut all the boring stuff from any of the books you might be able to salvage enough for a short film.

I want this about as much as I want the Dragonlance novels, the Battletech novels, the Drizzt novels, any future Iron Kingdoms novels, or any other cheap pulp, derived from the shackles of well-established IP worlds. Which is to say, not at all.

Seriously, they would all need major reworking to work as films. And you would not like the result, because it would be shaped to fit the wider audience. It would be another one like this or this or this. Or, you know: this cræp.

Cadian Blood. Human sci-fi soldiers vs. zombies.

Dress up a bunch of Brits like extras from Aliens, give them some lasgun looking weapons and a whole bunch of brain-eating undead.

I'd buy a ticket.

Last Chancers.

I want to see Kage's adventures and see if they can get someone as cool as Lee Marvin for Schafer.

Seeing that one either live or CGI would really be cool. Even a series, ALA Starship troopers.

I'd even buy that stuff.

Simply put?

"Cadian Blood". So far, every individual I've loaned my copy out to--has immediately and voraciously dug into the "real" meat of 40k. It's a good book, with a solid theme(Guardsmen fighting zombies!) and a tie-in to the Horus Heresy within. All you need is a brief primer introducing the Imperium of Man, which the meat of can be do by having a kind of "prologue" with the massive battle over the Shrineworld before it was a Shrineworld as that takes place during the Horus Heresy.

It has some interesting scenes in that book. Also, it has giant insectoids that lay eggs in peoples' brains.
