So we have all had that rule or piece of wargear that we know in our souls to be true or work a certain way, but turns out we couldn't be more wrong. So what are yours?
Since a good OP starts with their own stories here are two of mine.
Under 4th ed. I could have sworn that failing a dangerous terrain check killed your model outright not just wounded them. My Chaos Liutenant on bike might have lived through a few more battles if I hadn't mess that up.
Currently in the DE codex I've read the rules for the liquifier gun probably a dozen times and I could have sworn it was variable strength and AP. Nope... straight up Str 4. I couldn't figure out what the big deal was and why the weapon was so favored. I just knew I'd end up with several vollies of Str 1 AP 6 templates if I ever took one.

Well, there were the folks who kept arguing KFF to be 5+
There was a time when i though Zogwort could squig any SC, not just IC's. My friends thought so too, so we ended up with mephisquig, sanguisquig, Bjorn squighanded
I plead in my defense that Zogwort wasn't someone I had used much until then, and was trying him out for the first time in ages
My friend ran Lukas with his SW unaware that the stasis grenade isn't guaranteed to go off. He's a lot scarier if it's automatic He also ran Bjorn attached to dread units, as he thought he was an IC, which is how he got squigged (as i took his word for it )

I swear I bought Lucius thinking the fluff of his armor was reflected in the game: If he died, then next turn my opponent's model who killed him, if still alive, gets replaced with Lucius again.
I was new, and also bought Huron because I thought the Bear Claw he wore was cool. Not exactly the same as a rules confusion, but similar.

For the longest time, I kept confusing the abilities of the Swarmlord and Hive Tyrant when it comes to reserves. Rerolls of reserves, outflanking a unit, +1 to reserve rolls.
I kept having to look it up, and even then I mess them up.

I thought the Libarain's power quickening was granted to the whole squad, it gives the 'squad' (well just the libby ) fleet and I10 for the turn. I lined up an army list with a squad of 10 terminators with TH/ SS to run around in. Its a good job i realised before i spend £60 on 2 boxes of termies. lol

About 2 years after the current CSM codex came out, I got it in my head one game, somehow, that Warptime also let you reroll saves.

My Daemon Prince ROLLED through some Space Marines, THAT GAME. After the game, I was looking something else up and realized my mistake.
Fortunately, it was just my buddies. So,no harm no foul.

I've been playing the game for years (ever since I started in 5e) thinking that pivoting a vehicle didn't count as movement for purposes of disembarking - so a vehicle could just spin, and models could jump out, move, then charge.
In my defense though, I'm fairly sure that that's a common mistake, simply because IIRC pivoting doesn't count as movement for purposes of shooting and/or being assaulted.

A dark eldar player got angry at me when I pivoted my doomsday ark and shot the big gun, he said since I "moved" i don't get the big profile. I told him that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard and pointed it out to him under vehicles and shooting in the BRB. He was angry cause pivoting counted as his guys moving.

If you pick up a successful die that was not actually a success, your opponent cannot prove if it was a success or not.
If you pick up the fails and leave one behind, it's there for all to see. if you accidentally pick up a success, you're only hurting yourself.
I fail to see the sense in picking up successes as standard practice.

I thought in order to make a valid assault you had to move into base contact of the unit you were assaulting. So if for instance my unit is already encircled by termagaunts, you can't assault me with genestealers since you can't get into base contact with my squad.
Whoops.

According to the rules I read, you only have to be within assault range, and then move into assault. So if a unit is fully encircled, by an assaulting unit, a third unit within 6" of the first unit could still assault by charging and counts as in assault since they can get within 2" of a unit in base contact, and therefore technically counts as in assault.
Basically I could have sworn that the first model in the assaulting unit HAD to move base to base, but I looked all over the rules and could find no mention of that requirement. It just says you have to be within range to assault, and then after charging be in assault. The moving base to base requirement only exists if you could do it.

You have to make contact to make the assault. If the target unit is surrounded, you can't make contact, therefore cannot assault.

"Move the model into contact with the nearest enemy model in the unit being assaulted"
Period. If no model in your unit can get into contact with the enemy, then the unit cannot assault it.
Also note that the rules go onto explain that models in base contact with multiple units have to select which unti they wil attack and so on.

In the last game I played, my opponent, with less experience than me, was chasing down some of my ork boyz, who'd failed a leadership and run away, with his GD . I took a leadership test, rallied and snuffed him (the beast was on it's last wound). He had questioned me taking the leadership as the daemon was about 2" behind them in hot persuit. I had shaken my head and told him 'you're thinking WHFB mate, these guys can still rally'...
I was entirely communicating via my posterior.
