For me it was the first Dawn of War game that makes me to take interest...
Then I saw this and from that moment on I knew what faction suits me the most:

My introduction to 40k was through the Dawn of War video games, and from there to BL novels. As a result, I got 'recruited' by the Imperium, and by the Blood Ravens Chapter in particular.

I mean, who can resist the lure of a galaxy-wide empire ruled by and populated by Humans? Sure it's a shithole of a place, but Mankind is united, the galaxy is ours (most of it, anyway), and there's a sense of purpose that seems lacking in our modern society. I don't know, but it's like a feel of something greater calling out to you. Whether it's Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Titan Legions, etc., my loyalty is the Imperium of Man. Just the feel of the Imperium is enough to set my blood on fire.

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.

'She sat on the corner, gulping the soup down, uncaring of the heat of it. They had grown more watery as of late she noted, but she wasn't about to beggar food from the Imperials or the "Bearers of the Word." Tau, despite their faults at least didn't have a kill policy for her race.'

Not every shadow, but any shadow

My introduction to 40k was waaaaaaay back at the start in the Space Hulk days.

Nowadays I like the shininess and the fluffiness of the Grey Knights and Inquisitors, there is just so much you can do with them from a modelling perspective.

You can really have fun with your imagination.

Back is 3rd ed I played Sallies (still do), and my friend offered to sell me his pewter Cadian Guard. I figured why not, and now like 12,000 pts and ten yrs later it is still my favorite. I tried Chaos and Orks in that time and I ended up selling them for more Guard.

I actually got the Battle for Maccragge 4th ed starter set in December 07. Though I never got playing 4th ed rules, I still have those models.

The nids are my first and favourite army and while they may not be world class painting, thats only because I still use the same 6 step guide in that kit. I plan to add a swarmlord soon.

The marines are my biggest army. I originally tried a Ultrasmurf scheme with Enchanted Blue and Sunburst yellow. Didn't like it. Then.I read.a.Blood Ravens Novel.

Obviously I had to make paint.scheme.alterations.to fit my small.pool of paints, with oure Blood Red armour and Sunburst Pauldrons. TBH, I like it.

I got recruited by my Warhammer Fantasy playing friend, and by Dawn of War. I started playing Eldar because they are freaking awesome. They are a fragment of their former selves, and they can still beat the crap out of any other faction in the galaxy. Even their civilians are formidable (at least in the fluff...). I also love that they are the best psykers in the galaxy.

And I love the finesse required to play them on the tabletop. I hate the point-and-click gameplay of the Space Marines.

I was playing Dwarves in WHFB and I wanted to have a really fast army with powerful magic for once.
That was a long time ago when Eldar were actually fast and had psychic edge. Now, not so much.
At least falcon / serpent chassis is still beautiful (among with some other Eldar miniatures) and that also had a big impact. Of course I won't be buying super expensive plastic toy if I don't find it appealing.

Back in 07 I had a couple friends who played 40k. I wanted to get in on that, so I did, and after making a wholly uneducated decision, I went with Daemonhunters. Then I went on hiatus to six months, then played a game with them, then didn't touch them for a few years. Later (as in last year), I wanted to expand my army when the new GK codex came out. That didn't last long, because the NEcron codex came out.

Necrons are by far my favorite, even if they have I2 when they by all means shouldn't and their codex is, on the whole, shoddy. Another friend played them in 4th/5th (old codex), and liked them. So when I say the new 'dex, I jumped on the chance to usurp his stuff (since he didn't play anymore).

I'm building up some Blood Angels because I want that "Get-in-your-face-and-start-punching" army. While there are others that can do that too, I just like the look of the Blood Angels more. The models really appeal to me, particularly Sanguinary Guard and Dante.

Also, I'm a big fan of Alpha Legion for their emphasis on flexibility and adaptability. They're pretty much the polar opposite of the Ultramarines.

In '10 I had a roommate who read the BL books; he handed me Soul Hunter, and then told me about the Space Wolves. I read the NL book, then read the SW omnibuses, and then bought a pack of Grey Hunters a week later.

I really loved the vikings... IN SPAAACE! thing they have going on.

I used to play Blood Angels for around 8 years.... I had over 4000 points of death company killy madness etc...

I guess I picked them because they were Red.... Didnt care for the fluff back in those days so didnt bother picking it based on that side of 40k....

I grew bored of Power Armour though and have grown to detest it more than is reasonable really lol... I see space marines as a noob army and Xenos as a true commanders army since they have quirks =]

I have since started playing Tau as I loved the models... Robots!!!!!!

I also have Dark Eldar and it was the fluff that lured me in on that one... I love the idea of Crazys hanging on the side of a vehicle snatching up victims lol... reminds me of Mad Max or something.....

Dawn of war locked me in. Was a tau fan, even went looking for one of the xv-25 battlesuits as a model to make and keep due to how much I liked the army.

Eventually sealed the deal reading the fluff. After tau, orks were my next choice, with chaos afterwards, iron hands have been my last, recent collection.

This is actually the same way I got into 40k. It starts with Dawn of War, then I tried the books, then I decided to make some models, and now I'm totally into it. So I'm all about the Imperium (except if I had to start another army I would go tyranids or necron) and Space Marines.

I had a few friends who were into the game, then in its third edition. The unique background quickly enthralled me and I fell in love with the gothic aura and monastic garments of the Dark Angels. To me there's still nothing that spells "grimdark" like "super soldiers with plasma guns and freakin' monk hoods. Who are obsessed by a 10,000 year old secret shame that distorted them into a single-minded secretive sect."

Not long after that came the release of the Daemon Hunters, and with them the most beautiful models I have seen to date : the Grey Knights. Their fluff was all kinds of awesome ; it read like a Lovecraft novel where Mankind is still doomed, but is not going down without a desperate and appropriately heroic fight. I already knew my loyalty lied with them. Fast track to a few months ago after a several year hiatus... I rediscovered 40k and found my attachment to the Knights stronger than ever. The knightly imagery calls to my mind a fond cultural heritage. "Quality over quantity" ranks high in my system of values, and they are the embodiment of it ; they're arguably the best infantry in the galaxy both fluff-wise and crunch-wise.

In fact, I see in them a strangely humanistic symbolism : a testament to Man's boundless potential and ability to transcend himself.

I was walking through the pheonix mall when I was little. I saw a GW, went in, and the first thing I saw was a Tau pirahna. Then later, when I found out this was an actual game, I remembered that pirahna and wanted the Tau. And also my love for the ocean and sea creatures led me to them.

I got into the Imperial guard by a many combination of things; for one it was these videos http://youtu.be/NNRHKaZmWBg and http://youtu.be/iKIAMAqGNIY , there was also the models and possibilities for them, and the final and most important reason was the fluff and feeling of it. Men and women fighting with nothing but simple weapons and armor standing shoulder to shoulder with many like them and even those who are different, giving thier confidence to their equipment, their commanders, their god, and each other to make it out through the deepest parts of war's hell, fighting to protect those who they loved and the ones who can not protect themselves. With soldiers making the noblest of sacrifices without using the best equipment or being the strongest beings in the galaxy and even if they are looked down upon by many and are treated miserably, they still fight on with purpose, even if it is for naught. To me, the Imperial Guard is not an army, it is an idea that even if man is faced with many obstacles they will still press on and that Humanity kind shed its differences to unite and fight for its survival. That general idea is what I love about the guard, they give hope to the hopeless and that they are the protectors of Humanity and helping lead it out of the darkness in the 41st century.

I simply bought a little tank (a Leman Russ) for fun, when my brother got into 40k (he started with Chaos)

when i learned more about my little tank and the millitary force its a part of (the Imperial Guard), i knew it was the right army for me. Mere mortal men, not wussy Super powered super soldiers, Mere men armyed with a rifle and the most basic equipment (along side vast armys of tanks, artillary and more) charging head long against the worst the galaxy has to offer.

Plus the sheer varient you can put into the IG is incredible.

and i really like tanks and stuff like that.

My main army is tyranids. What got me to play them was when I was watching my brother back in the early 90's playing 2nd edition, he played eldar and his friend was playing guard. Well I remember looking through the rule book and they had a fair amount of tyranid pics in there. Then I started reading up on them and I fell in love with just how awesome they are. Who doesn't want to strip a planet of all living things? lol

Then again, nids were not my first army I purchased. I had space marines as my first(who hasn't right?). Just got the starter box went from there. I played horrible back in those days, They were out maneuvered by my buddy who played eldar. He ran circles around my guys when the eldar crystal targeting matrix was broken. For those that don't remember or know, it allowed the falcon to pop out of cover, fire, then pop back in cover.

Anywho, Ive had a total of four armies since Ive first started playing. But Ive really only put 100% effort on two of them.

I bought Guard, and was going to play just to get my friend to shut up, and I still like my guard, but the starter came with Marines, and I wanted to play Black Templar...I played Chaos in BFG, and for some reason I got Abaddon to place off to the side when I used the Planet Killer...then I ended yp with some of the platic Plague Marines, and some metal Thousand Sons, then a handfull of marines...since no else was playing them I thought it would be good for out BFG/40K mixed games. Now that has turned into 4 more Rhinos, half a dozen bikes, 25 more marines, a lot of heavy weapons, Defilor, 4 of the named HQs, 20 Beserkers, some cultests, 2 more lords, and 20 lesser demons...and i never looked back
