Not trying to kiss up, I'm just genuinely pleasantly surprised. I have been on several 40K fora (which shall remain nameless) where people got so instantly snarky with the noobs, or just quarrelled so much over esoteric nonsense (Can you use non-GW figs? Can you use non-GW paints? Can you use oop GW figs? etc.) that they lost members left and right, and somehow could never figure out why?

THis place is really a nice change of pace. Kudos.

Generally speaking, you are right, which is why Dakka is the largest site for hobby we enjoy doing. There are plenty of good people willing to help and share ideas without the snarky comments.

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

FGS n00b! You can't use your OOP Ork Trukk, it's not even half the size of the current one, TLOS will be fethed. Modelling for advantage!

But seriously, we're all here because we like it here. Most people try to keep it friendly. We get the odd troll or rules lawyer taking RAW too far, but for the mostpart we're alright. I hope you like it here too!

I've been a fan of the Dakka forums for a while, I think different forums can carry different vibes. I enjoy that Dakka is generally laid back and friendly. Even when people get heated, generally things stay calm. Anybody that takes 40K or even life too seriously isn't someone fun to be around.

It is quite a nice forum. There are some intellectual colossi that like to test their mettle against people, but on the whole it's quite polite and friendly here.

Yeah, DakkaDakka is kind of awesome. You can find out all sorts of hobby news, discuss hobby issues and the painting/modelling tutorial forum is just amazing.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

Spot on dude.
Had I known about Dakka from the start I wouldnt have wasted years of my time on another crap forum.

Here you are not over-restricted in what you are allowed to talk about and people tend to be very helpful and friendly.

It is a rather nice forum isn't it? Tis a rather place to avoid doing homewo.... er... get inspiration from, yes?

mattyrm wrote:It's cos I'm here. Everyone loves me.

Well, that is one reason I stick around.

Dakka wasn't the first forum I had been on, but it has far more members so threads actually get answers most of the time and there are plenty of helpful people. The other is pretty nice, but much quieter and more of a place to lurk at this point.

I was on the look out for a long time for a nice easy going forum for a hobby I like...ie paintball..... did not work out. When I got into 40k I was directed to this forum and it has been a blast ever since!

Yeah, I got sick of the modding at another site and made a account here a while back so, it just works.

I got hooked on the OT section and FOW and well... I like whinging about Finecast. =o]

I find the modding here rather fair, I don't think I have had a single warning.

@OP welcome to Dakka may you become as jaded as the rest of us.

Plus the orkmoticons are the best, as I said in another thread all they need a 'headbaning againsted wall' one and I would be a happy camper.

Even though I troll Dakka a lot (and I'm sure I have made countless people's ignore lists ), I really like the people here and I think that there's many reasons why most people prefer this website over many of the "other" ones out there. Not to say that other forums are bad, it's just that Dakka is waaaay better! haha

I'm completely new to 40k, have a half-developed sense of the rules, have crazy ideas for armies (heck, just in general!), and will occasionally post a pants-on-head dumb@$$ comment. However, I am tolerated (almost cheerfully on some threads) and politely corrected. For me, it's the sense of family you get. Where the young'uns like me can get questions answered and feedback given. Dakka is just a big family gathering: everyone is tolerated and most people are really nice (but there are a few jerks). That's why the site is so popular and so respected.

This coming May I'll have been coming here thirteen years. Since it was a site mostly supporting our local club and league here in New Hampshire. I've been moderating for a bit less than that (2001 or 2002; can't remember anymore). I still love the place, and I really appreciate that so many other people do too. We've put a crapload of time and work into it, and it's always great to hear that folks enjoy it.

Dakka is great

The donkeycave/goodguy ratio is way lower here than most other forums, and if you need a tutorial or rules advice chances are it's on here somewhere
