I've decided that im sick of playing armies for their uses in games. I've decided that I want to make an army purely for the modelling and painting.

However, I havent decided what army/theme i wanted to do yet and I was wondering what ideas the good people of dakka have.

aannnnddddd.....

GO!

Depends if you like modelling detail, in which case you want expensive elite army, or wacky, in which case Orcs is good, they do exemplify individual.

Chaos gives you endless scope with scars, mutations, cannibalised gear and dark magic.

^I thinking along the lines of a very themed army with lots of awesome looking completely unique stuff.

Find what you like in the fluff, the rest will follow. For instance. I started Orks: I thought the war on the Forgeworld Scalex V was pretty cool, so I based my force around that. For my Chaos, I liked Vraks, and the Apostles of Contagion and their heraldry, the Fly. So a lot of my conversion follows insect like themes. And not even necessarily events, but preferred enemies, distinct dogmas or cultural traits. Just look at the Blood Axes. They're the most underhanded Orks, openly trading with the Imperium. And notorious backstabbers to boot.

Horse-riding orks. Or any beast, really. create your own ork tribe!

Well there are many possible interesting army concepts. If you want to follow your bike idee, you could build a quad-army instead of a bike one or build hover bikes. You could go chaos and make a bike army like a cliche rocker gang with choppers, lether-vests and skulls, chains and spikes all over the place. An interesting theme for the chaos biker could be the ghostrider comic character.

Alternatively there are multiple other concepts (some already done), like a grot army but armed and played like imperial guard, an adeptus mechanicum army. Or an ork tribe with only looted space marine armors, vehicles and weapons.
If you like modeling and scratch building you could build a tyranid army based on the zerg from starcraft.
I have also seen a chaos space marine army made from undeads and played as a tzeench themed army.

What do you like? Is there some game or book that you are fond of? I, for instance, am rather fond of Starcraft, hence I did these for a counts-as deathwing army:

Other great sources for sci-fi lore with deep background would be star wars, star treck, babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, the various Stargates, Mass Effect, Gears of war, halo, etc.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

You could make an ork freebooter army.
