Thousand Sons Battleship wandering the galaxy...

Hello people. Once again, we are faced with another guy who, just like so many others, believe that were wasting our time among other things because of our devotion to 40k.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/extra-punctuation/9153-Hating-Warhammer-40k-and-Space-Marine?fb_comment_id=fbc_10150398487671020_20969462_10150615870641020#f3b8b6e29

Honestly, it's guys like this that get everyone together...how ironic that otherwise we'd be arguing over the plus and minus of our respective factions...well, let's just discuss how we feel about this.

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.

'She sat on the corner, gulping the soup down, uncaring of the heat of it. They had grown more watery as of late she noted, but she wasn't about to beggar food from the Imperials or the "Bearers of the Word." Tau, despite their faults at least didn't have a kill policy for her race.'

Yahtzee? Ah, don't bother paying him any attention. He can be amusing in his Zero Punctuation videos but otherwise he's mostly irritating.

I read the whole article...

He isn't bashing 40k as much as he is bashing the Space Marine game and lack of depth in the story-line.

And truth be told, if you don't delve deeper into the fluff of 40k it is quite blah, just a bunch of people fighting each other. So, you can't blame the writer for not reading the novel, and the codex, as well at spend hours on lexicanum

If he thinks we are wasting our time why is he wasting his time complaining about us wasting our time? At least we have a hobby to fill our time. He obviously doesn't!

What's the point of bashing a 40k spin-off if you don't know the wider story behind it? It's like Japan-bashing or racial generalizing without understanding the culture behind the ones getting bashed.

Jesus did you guys even read it?

He is a video game reviewer (hilarious at that).... He is saying the game lacks any theme other than it is a Space Marine game....

Meaning only the mindless drones of the TT version will appreciate it, since as a game on its own, it is unoriginal with a boring story too it, so only a TT player would understand the concepts....

Nothing he says is untrue.... Space Marine is a sterile game.

Like all GW based games so far other than DoW 1..... they have all sucked.....

Because writing is his job and he doesn't have time like you or me to read hours of 40k back-story. Before I got into 40k I didn't even know their was a back-story. I played the DoW games and liked the idea of playing a cooler game of Risk.

He says in the article "Now, I'm sure Warhammer 40K is a lovely tabletop strategy game. It's not my bag, I was and still am into storytelling play rather than win/lose wargaming, but I'm sure it means a lot to you." That doesn't sound like his is telling how bad the table-top game is. He is a video-game columnist, so he beef isn't with the table-top, its with the video game.

The game(for as fun as it is) isn't anything special or ground breaking. It basically like every other shooter and doesn't add anything new or revolutionary. Like he says again in the article "On the whole, not terrible enough to despise, nowhere near good enough to recommend. Just boring. My least favorite kind of game." Which in reality is pretty true....

Yahtzee is a pathetic hypocrite. He claims to be a gamer, but hates essentially every single game that is released. All he does is rant and never tries to do anything else.

Actually most of his reviews of games are 100% accurate...

wether you enjoy the game or not... at the end of the day...... nearly all video games are lacking in ideas, are much to linear or have terrible background stories etc...

Even major award winning titles are pretty lame.

It simply shows the state of video games in general. They are throw away products.. They design them to be this way.

I havent played a fantastic video game in years... Ive played good ones.... but not fantastic...

Yahtzee is annoying little whiner. Not every game needs to be another Mass Effect, which ironically enough ruined its story with the 3rd one. It can be enough for a game to be fun and I for one think that all of relics 40k games have been fun.

And ironically, he slammed the Mass Effect games in his reviews...

People raging out and taking his reviews so seriously is really sad.

He does speak about the fluff, basically saying he doesn't like it even though he has no clue about it. That's flamebait, of course it attracts virulent replies. I can't see how coming to say "hurr hurr, butthurt, hurr" is more constructive though.

Oh please. We rail on the story of 40k on this very forum all the time. But when an outside person comes and says "it's dumb" it's all the sudden trolling?

Puh-leeze.

Right, I did not include all the possibilities : when you complain gratuitously, you're either stupid or trolling. I'm at least giving him the benefit of the doubt, what with gratuitous rants being his schtick.
Doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would deny it, by the way.

Why he hates 40k I don't know.
But I do know that the more he hates my hobby the more I like it.
I do not mind his review of the game, no game if perfect in my opinion to. But every game has it's story and it's good side, and "Space Marine" was no exception.
However, saying that you hate entire saga just because it doesn't have happy ending is kind off dumb ( he obviously want Emperor to became super pony princess best friend forever with Chaos Gods and that they hold hands all together and go into the sunset ). And also attacking people hobby just because it is less acceptable in society then others ( like gambling ) is just ridiculous. I buy and paint my miniatures because I like it, because it bring me some sort of satisfaction to paint every part perfectly and to enjoy in the results in my work. I am not painting them so that I could play toy solders later with my cat or with child next door.

Rrararrgh, he didn't like something I like, he's an idiot and a troll!

Seriously, he makes some good points. I did read the whole article, and I have to agree with him. While I personally did enjoy the game, I'm well-insulated by the fact that I also enjoy the 40k universe enough to ignore everything wrong with it. The characters really didn't have much personality to speak of, and even playing with a controller the movement is clunky (which makes sense, as you're clad in a gigantic suit of power armor). And besides, he didn't even hate the game - he just said it wasn't terrible, but not exactly good, either. Just kind of mediocre.

And he never said he outright hated 40k as a whole. He just said that on the surface, the fluff sounds kind of stupid and way too dark, and (likely without playing it) it looks like chess with our own painted miniatures. Hazard30 even brought it up, Yahtzee says that it's really not a game for him, but he's sure "Warhammer 4 0k is a lovely tabletop strategy game."

This is different from other people who don't understand 40k because...?

Yahtzee's whole thing is about hating things. That's it. That's his whole thing, but he still gets me to come back to enjoy his banter in his review vids. Now of course he's reviewed games i like and love, and I didn't go all nerdrage on him because he didn't feel the same about them as I did. Instead I laughed and watched some more of the videos.

If you can't get past one person reviewing a game and a little bit of the story behind it, then idk what to tell you. Go paint some more miniatures til you calm down?

You're getting your undies in a knot over nothing, and just come off as whining about another person's opinion.

TLDR? Don't like it? Don't read it.
