Hi, Dakka. Now, I've just made myself a counts-as Vulkan He'stan using various bits and pieces. I will be fielding him in a few matches soon. So, I was wondering what unit he does best with, where he can provide some nice firepower, and wipe out enemies in Assault. Any ideas?

People either build their list with the idea that vulkan is going with a squad, or they simply place him were they need him in the deployment.
Vulkan works well with a land raider, toss in a cheap chaplin for extra death if you want, or add a librarian with at least null zone.
Some people put him in a drop pod, mostly with sternguard for extra melee power.
Others still take a small command squad with melta guns and/or thunderhammers in a razorback or a drop pod for a small kill team.
The final way I've seen him is just defense for a unit of scouts or devestators. Vulkan can pretty much go anywhere and do anything but reliably kill vehicles.

with a unit of termis you have a deathstar, with sterngaurd you have a firing squad that can now hold it's own in combat against anything but really elite CC units. I would do one of those if I was going to run Vulkan.

Vulkan is a tough one actually. Your initial response to fielding him will be to throw him into a beat stick unit. I caution against this. From several years of using Vulkan I found he died to easily in CC to power fists etc because he isn't an EW.
He fulfills an excellent support role for shooting units. I used to like to drop Vulkan in a Drop Pod with Sternguard totting 5 combimeltas and 2 heavy flamers. That way you can combat squad them upon entering, pop transport and flame everything that comes out of it. Vulkan is then a really good buff to that unit in CC.
He is a good buff to a Tac squad in a rhino, sternguard in a rhino. Another combo I loved, in a DP heavy list, was an Assault Squad no Jump Packs 2 flamers, sarge with TH, free Drop Pod. Then throw Vulkan and a Techmarine in the unit too. 3 TL Flamers, one TL Heavy Flamer, on the drop puts the hurt on any unit, in CC you've got the TH, Claw on Techmarine, Vulkans Spear.
Try some combos out, he is a definite boost to most mid line units in the SM codex.

The one time I ran him. I put him in a raider redeemer with Libby and 5x th/SS. They killed 1k in tanks and troops before the game ended. That was at 2k with great terrain layout and bad deployment against another marine player. Null zone with them is disgusting.

I have run him in a stern guard unit with 5 combi melta/flamers and put them all in a drop pod. Helps that suicide squad stay around a bit more.

Most people are NOT fielding him for his Stat Line. They are fielding him for his OP re roll of basically half the weapons on the table.......
You can stuff him under a rock and not use him and he still makes backs his points by the end of the game.
He is a HQ so you can put him in any unit and he will boost it.... You put him where you feel he will get into combat.. Even if he dies you whole army still gets his ability to re roll so who cars if he dies =]

Unless they have a Captain, including Sicarius, Lysander, Shrike , or Khan, they are cheating. Vulkan is not able to take a Command Squad. He is not permitted as fluffwise he is not a captain.

Pretty much this. I pay the points for Vulkan for his Chapter Tactics. Anything else he does during a game is just icing on the Twin Linked cake.

I use him for his personal ability and wesome design idea. I rarely rn more than 4 Meltaguns or Flamers in total, and have 6 in all. One of which is a TL weapon already. And I don't have Thunder Hammers.

Has this been clarified by GW as being true? It seems very straight-forward to me that if you can only get a benefit by adding a character to your army, that benefit is not available if he's not in the army. Said character can be "not in the army" by not being included initially or by becoming a casualty. I'd love to be wrong but the logic seems pretty clear.

You replace a special rule (Combat Tactics) in order to gain his Chapter Tactics of TL Meltas and Flamers.This is not an effect stating "As long as Vulkan is on the table" or something similar, therefore you keep his Chapter Tactics even if he's dead.

Hes a pretty straitforward unit, he buffs meltas/flamers/Thunder hammers so put him in a drop pod/land raider with a squad with that stuff with an army with that stuff
