Subject: DIY large bases - good value and good idea, or tacky and illegal?

So, in an effort to save myself $60 on buying large bases, I've taken a go at making them myself out of plasticard. While I was able to cut the circular face, it wasn't until I tried to apply the sides that I realised that I'd need a horse-collar shaped piece of plasticard, not a long, thin rectangle, in order to get the tapered angle right. As that's practically impossible for me, I'm now come to a dilemma. Should I keep going with these and actually field them, or should I just quit while I'm behind and start saving up cash for the real bases?
To note, the scratch base is almost exactly the same height (.15mm taller, hardly noticeable unless you're looking at both of them side by side very closely), and both of them have the exact same circumference (62mm) at the top of the base. The only difference is that the actual GW bases taper out at the bottom (out to 64mm) while the scratch ones have sides that are perpendicular to the face.
So, the first question is is this legal? Put on your TFG tourney hat. Would there be anyone who would make a big enough deal out of the non-tapered sides for me not to bother?
Secondly, I've got this feeling that it would actually be rather tacky. You wouldn't really notice ALL that much once they were painted up the same, but you would still be able to notice looking at them. Should I just save myself the embarrassment of how I was too poor and lazy to bitz-order?
On a related note, is there anywhere I could get large bases in the quantity I'm looking for without shelling out $3.50 apiece from the war store?

to be honest i think someone at a tournament would say something just to say something considering you cant move through places that your fat base dont fit lol
perhaps make the basses 64mm to comply with the tapered edge of the gw version?
and about it being tacky, the one alone looks fine but it may look slightly goofy when you have say 20 of them. perhaps the tapered edges subtly blend them to the gaming area better just a thought not actually tested.
imo make 64mm bases so they are the same size as gw ones and then there really isnt anything to complain about and you dont have to drop 60 friggin bucks on basses...get another tank or something ya know

I think if they are all 64mm like the gw ones it wont matter what you make them with or if the edge tapers or not.
I dont think they will look tacky as long as you do a decent job on basing them.

Don't bother with the taper or worry about the difference in width. The taper doesn't matter for legality and thickness isn't really an issue since in the past, HW teams were shipped with round bases that had no taper and were half as thick as the current bases. They looked like this (not my pic):
I just grabbed one of those thin GW bases from my bits box, measured it and found it is actually a smidge smaller than 60mm in diameter! Your current base size is larger than this so you should be just fine.
If you want an affordable option, here's 8 60mm round bases for 4 bucks!

I agree you do not have to taper. As long as the base is the same height and width, no one will care. Frankly if you want to base your entire army on home made bases people do it all the time by casting their own bases out of resin. As a result, they often do not have the taper at a all.

I bet if you painted them black, most people won't even notice, let alone complain. The only place you might expect an issue is definitely at a tourney, but just because people can be so damn picky there.
I did something similar, but I went a bit hardcore and made my large bases out of a sheet of wood that was the same thickness. Then I did a texture on top to hide the wood-grain

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one? |

So, I was doing some more looking around, and GW doesn't even sell the heavy weapons bases. The only kind you can get from them are the old flat ones Eilif mentioned.
I think a part of what I'm concerned with here as well is that the bases I have won't match any of the other bases in my army, which will sort of look off.

Do you already have alot of HW teams on the raised bases? Asthetically, it would be ideal for all the HW teams to be on the same kind of base, but even if they weren't you could at least try and make sure that the each HW squad was on the same kind of bases. Best of luck whatever you decide.
By the way, I really like the carriages you made for your Lascannons. Are those LEGOs I see? Do you have a link to how you did it?
I also used alternate carriages, for my lascannon teams. Mine were made from toy army man cannons. but yours look much more modern.

Yeah, actually. I could just reconvert all of my HWs to be on the shorter bases, but I actually like the upraised ones better...

It's shower door rollers put together with a piece of sprue and a hacked-down tripod with some bitz thrown on it. You can see how I made them here.
